Chief of Excuses: DHS secretary blames climate change for border crisis, Roe decision for violence

Mayorkas said he is "very mindful that the Supreme Court's decision in reversing and overturning Roe v. Wade has really heightened the threat environment"

As illegal migrant numbers are hitting record highs at the Southern Border and violence is rising across the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday blamed the problems on climate change and the Supreme Court's decision to overrule Roe v. Wade.

Even though Customs and Border Protection agents encountered nearly a quarter of a million migrants at the Southern Border in May, the highest number of monthly encounters ever, Mayorkas told ABC's "This Week": "I think that we are doing a good job. We need to do better."

He said the Biden administration is focused on working with Latin American countries to handle illegal immigration.

"This is a – this is a phenomena that not only the United States is experiencing. Colombia now has more than 2 million Venezuelans within its borders. Costa Rica has indicated that 2 percent of its population is Nicaraguan, and that might rise to 5 percent," he said.

The increase in illegal immigration is due to COVID-19 and climate change, among other things, the White House official said.

"The migration that is occurring throughout the hemisphere is reflective of the economic downturn, increase in violence throughout the region, the the result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the results of climate change. We're really in a in a regional challenge, and we are addressing it with our regional partners," he claimed.

Mayorkas, whose agency oversees counterterrorism efforts, also blamed the increased violence across the nation on the Supreme Court ruling that abortion is not a constitutional right.

The secretary told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday that his agency is "very pleased with the Supreme Court's decision" to end the Trump-era remain in Mexico policy.

However, Mayorkas also said DHS has "seen a heightened threat environment over the last several months over a number of different volatile issues that galvanize people on different sides of each issue."

His department is "very mindful that the Supreme Court's decision in reversing and overturning Roe v. Wade has really heightened the threat environment," Mayorkas stressed.

Third wave of COVID-19 could peak higher than second wave, Queensland Health Minister Yvette D'Ath says

Queensland's Health Minister Yvette D'Ath has not ruled out the re-introduction of mask mandates in light of an increase in COVID-19 cases as the third wave makes its way through the state.

Key points:

Ms D'Ath said Queensland Health would follow any future advice from the Chief Health Officer

Queensland recorded 3,971 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with no deaths

Ms D'Ath said the third wave of COVID likely has not peaked

Ms D'Ath said there was no recommendation at the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) to re-introduce mandatory masks, but Queensland Health would follow any future advice from the Chief Health Officer (CHO).

"We do remind people as we go through this third wave that they can make those decisions for themselves," Ms D'Ath said.

"I know just about everyone carries a mask with them, whether it's in your car or your handbag.

"So if people feel like they're in a situation where they can't socially distance and they are particularly vulnerable then, you know, by all means, wear a mask."

Queensland recorded 3,971 new COVID-19 cases and 32,061 active cases in the past 24 hours, with no deaths.

There were 630 people in hospital, with 18 in intensive care.

Ms D'Ath said it was important that people remember COVID-19 was still having an impact on communities.

"We're hearing that this wave that we're in, a third wave, could end up peaking higher than we saw the second wave and we are not at that peak yet," she said.

"Our health workers would prefer to not have to be caring for people who are seriously unwell from COVID who are in ICU and sadly, who are passing away every week.

"We've got over 1,500 staff furloughed again and we ask for everyone's patience as our hospitals and our health staff do their best to look after everyone in these very trying times.

Review announced into management at Launceston hospital in wake of damning commission of inquiry evidence

The Tasmanian government has announced it will immediately be conducting a review into child safety and the management of complaints at the Launceston General Hospital.

Key points:

The review will be carried out despite the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings still running

The announcement of the review comes after a week of inquiry hearings in which senior managers at the hospital gave evidence

Tasmania's Premier apologised for the failures of governments "past and present"

The announcement comes after the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings turned its focus to the Launceston General Hospital last week.

The inquiry has heard of catastrophic failings at the hospital around its handling of notorious paedophile James Geoffrey Griffin, who worked as a nurse on the children's ward.

During the hearings, it was revealed a senior executive at the hospital got most of her information about an investigation into Griffin from two podcasts.

The inquiry also heard Griffin's nursing supervisor said she was aware of him hugging young patients but his behaviour was "accepted by all staff" and in her opinion at the time something which could be addressed by "education".

ISIS Supporters Who Distributed Child Porn, Instructions For Making Bombs, Sentenced To Two Decades In Federal Prison

SAN ANTONIO – Two men were sentenced today for conspiring to provide material support to the designated foreign terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham/Syria (ISIS).

Kristopher Sean Matthews, aka Ali Jibreel, 36, of South Carolina, was sentenced to 240 months in prison and Jaylyn Christopher Molina (aka Abdur Rahim), 24, of Cost, TX, was sentenced to 216 months in prison.

According to court documents, since May 2019, Matthews conspired with Molina to provide services to ISIS by administering an encrypted, members-only chat group for persons who supported ISIS ideology; by collecting, generating, and disseminating pro-ISIS propaganda; and by disseminating firearms training materials and bomb-making instructions.

On November 24, 2020, and January 25, 2021, Matthews and Molina, respectively, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS. In addition, Molina pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. Both men have remained in federal custody since their arrests on September 21, 2020. Molina was sentenced to 216 months in prison on the terrorism charge and another 216 months in prison on the child pornography charge. Both sentences for Molina were ordered to run concurrently.

“The United States Attorney’s Office will work closely with our law enforcement partners locally, nationally, and internationally to do everything possible under the law to stop terrorists before they can harm our citizens,” said United States Attorney Ashley C. Hoff. “Matthews and Molina recruited individuals and provided bomb-making instructions to aid ISIS. In this case, along with our law enforcement partners, we successfully stopped Matthews and Molina before anyone was harmed.”

“This sentencing serves as a reminder that terrorist organizations such as ISIS and their affiliates remain a threat to the United States in the homeland and abroad,” said San Antonio FBI Special Agent in Charge Oliver E. Rich Jr. “Addressing this threat continues to be the highest priority of the FBI and our Joint Terrorism Task Force partners.”
