Chinese scientists have discovered a drug cocktail capable of converting a certain type of stem cell into a much more potent version that has the potential to grow into a complete organism on its own, according to a study published in the latest issue of the journal Nature this week.

Experts said the discovery of this "elixir of life", which involves three main ingredients, has paved the way for scientists to explore the complex process of how an organism develops from the earliest stages of life. This is critical for stem cell research, regenerative medicine, and preserving critically endangered organisms.

However, they also warned that such technology, though still in its infancy, may yield controversial applications in the future as it lays the theoretical groundwork to replicate an existing organism without using reproductive cells like sperm and eggs.

In the study, scientists from Tsinghua University found a combination of small molecular compounds that can turn pluripotent stem cells from a laboratory mouse into an upgraded version called totipotent stem cells.

The drug cocktail, named TAW, contains the chemicals TTNPB,1-Azakenpaullone and WS6. Researchers cultured mouse pluripotent stem cells in petri dishes containing TAW and created totipotent stem cells that retained their signature characteristics measured via a variety of thorough and stringent test criteria.

An investigation has been launched into payments made by a property company that reportedly bought homes on Prince Charles’ failed eco development in Ayrshire.

The Scottish Charity Regulator has confirmed it will look into 11 purchases made by Havisham Properties on Knockroon, a development intiated by the heir to the throne as part of regeneration plans around the nearby Dumfries House estate, the Observer reports.

The homes on the estate owned by The Prince’s Foundation, which the royal initially envisioned would constitute an eco village intended to regenerate the the former mining community, are believed to have been bought between 2012and 2017.

A spokesman for the charity watchdog said: “We can confirm that the work of Havisham Group and property transactions relating to the Knockroon development in Ayrshire forms part of our overall investigation, work on which is ongoing.”

This study demonstrated that human primary urinary stem cells with positive TA act as a distinct subpopulation with potential regeneration capacity in both cell proliferation and multiple differentiation. USCsTA+ can more efficiently give rise to osteogenic, skeletal myogenic, smooth muscle, and urothelial cell lines than USCsTA−. Importantly, despite that USCs display TA, they do not form teratoma, which provides a safe cell source for clinical application. In addition, the number of USCsTA+ decline with increasing age. Future investigations should focus on understanding the role that physiological factors play in regulating both the temporal pattern of USCsTA+ and their influence on the ability of these cells to participate in better tissue repair. Determining the requirements for the effect of TA on the paracrine effect of USC has important implications for understanding the anti-inflammatory, fibrosis inhibition, and redox effect of USCsTA+. It will be beneficial to better understand alterations in this cell subpopulation throughout the human lifespan, and how they translate into, aging, renal dysfunction, drug-induced nephrotoxicity, or cancer, among others.

On a podcast last November, Piquet discussed a crash between Hamilton and Max Verstappen during last year’s British Grand Prix. Piquet referred to Hamilton as “neguinho” in Portuguese, which means “little Black guy.” The term is not necessarily a racist slur in Brazil, but it is an expression that is increasingly seen as distasteful, and its phrasing can also emphasize that.

Piquet apologized to Hamilton on Wednesday, but said the term, while “ill thought out," was not meant to be offensive. He added “neguinho” can be used as a short for “people in general.” But his phrasing in that part of the video left no doubt he was singling out Hamilton as “the little Black guy," to which he added a homophobic slur.

It’s more than language. These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport. I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life. There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action.

My friend Madeleine Albright talked often about arriving in America as a little girl—a refugee from Czechoslovakia. On a ship coming into New York Harbor, she saw the Statue of Liberty and felt like the woman was waving to her, saying "You are welcome here."
