California residents to receive stimulus checks — to help offset inflation
State leaders in California have settled on a stimulus relief bill that will soon help residents defray the recent rise in the cost of essential goods like food and gas. In other words, more state government spending will be issued in the hopes of offsetting the rampant inflation that has plagued the American economy for the last year or so.
Last Thursday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the $17 billion stimulus bill that supporters hope will provide much needed "inflation relief" across the state.
"We have an agreement with the legislature on California’s budget!" the Office of the Governor of California boasted in a tweet late last month. "This budget takes immediate actions to give $ back to millions who are grappling with global inflation and rising costs while tackling some of the greatest challenges of our time."
As with the stimulus checks issued with the federal government in response to government shutdowns during COVID-19, the California inflation checks will be means-tested. According to CBS, "[A] couple that earns a combined $125,000 and has two children would qualify for $350 per adult plus $350 for their children, for a total of $1,050."
Couples earning at least $500,000 or single taxpayers earning at least $250,000 will not qualify for a relief check.
Fox 5 San Diego claims that more than 20 million California residents will likely receive a check. The state has developed a "middle class tax calculator" to help residents determine whether they qualify, and if so, for how much.
However, some are worried that these checks double down on the very government policies that caused inflation to skyrocket in the first place.
CBS says, "Economists credit the combination of government stimulus spending — like direct payments to families and loans to businesses — and supply-chain problems as contributing to the current inflation crisis."
But others deny that this relief bill will contribute to the problem since it merely redirects funds from the $97 billion budget surplus the state announced it had about six weeks ago. It doesn't call for printing more money and injecting it into the economy artificially.
Californians can expect to see the money, either through direct deposit or debit card, as early as October. On Friday, gas in California reached $6.27 a gallon, nearly 30% higher than the national average.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says discussions are happening about encouraging mask uptake in some areas
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has weighed in on whether Queensland would re-introduce a mask mandate amid a rise in COVID-19 cases.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had admitted discussions are underway to encourage the uptake of mask wearing in certain situations as COVID-19 cases surge.
She however stopped short of mandating the use of masks when asked during a press conference on Monday afternoon.
“We are not doing a mask mandate but there are discussions happening about urging people in certain situations to wear masks,” she told reporters.
“If anything changes, we will let the public know.”
Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard earlier said there was "increasing pressure" nationally to make masks mandatory for residents again as the country moves deeper into winter.
"Philosophically we want to move away from restrictions towards more self-responsibility, and that means being up-to-date with your vaccines," Dr Gerrard told 4BC on Friday.
"I can say that nationally, there is increasing pressure, there is a school of thought, that we should be mandating masks again."
Ms Palaszczuk said she had been advised by the state’s Health Minister, Yvette D’Ath, that hospitalisations with COVID-19 are set to increase as colder weather comes.
According to Queensland Health, there are 598 people in hospital and a further 16 in ICU.
The number of Queenslanders in hospital is set to increase to 613, the Premier said, as she encouraged residents to monitor their symptoms.
“I do want to say to Queenslanders that COVID is out there, there’s a lot of people out there that do have it,” she said.
“Please make sure that you are monitoring your symptoms.
“If you have not had COVID, please take care but as a general rule – if you are sick, please stay at home.

Israel exonerates itself in shooting death of Palestinian journalist
An IDF probe claimed it didn’t mean to kill an al-Jazeera journalist, though the US State Department wasn’t so sure
The Israeli Defense Forces has concluded there is no way its soldiers “deliberately” fired at Palestinian al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot and killed on May 11 while covering an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) raid on the Palestinian city of Jenin in the West Bank. The Israeli military claimed it had assembled a multidisciplinary task force to “reconstruct and model the circumstances of the incident as accurately as possible” in an IDF statement issued on Monday.
However, the Israeli statement seemingly contradicted the conclusions of the US State Department, which found the IDF had likely killed Abu Akleh “unintentionally” but argued there was no way to be sure of the gunman’s intention. State Department spokesman Ned Price confirmed that “gunfire from IDF positions was likely responsible for the death of Shireen Abu Akleh.”
Washington’s investigators had conducted a ballistic analysis which found the bullet too “badly damaged” to reach a “clear conclusion.” Their evaluation of IDF and Palestinian Authority (PA) investigations led them to reach the conclusion that Israeli gunfire had killed the journalist.
When the PA refused to allow Israel to examine the bullet that killed Abu Akleh, reasoning that the country had an abysmal record of investigating shootings of Palestinians by Israelis due to an inherent conflict of interest, the US stepped up to examine the bullet instead. However, Israel retained custody of the rifle determined to have fired the bullet.
An apparent compromise was reached by which the US Security Coordinator (USSC) for Israel and the Palestinian Authority received the bullet from the Palestinians and conducted the ballistic examination in Israel. However, Israeli experts were the ones to “determine the connection between the bullet and the weapon from which it was fired,” according to the IDF statement. While representatives from the USSC were allegedly present throughout the entire process, it was not clear whether the PA had been given the opportunity to sign off on allowing the Israelis the key role in the probe, given their previous opposition to allowing them access to the bullet.
With a visit by US President Joe Biden to Israel and the West Bank less than two weeks away, Price was careful to qualify the State Department’s conclusions by suggesting that the USSC found no reason to believe the shooting had been intentional, “but rather the result of tragic circumstances during an IDF-led military operation against factions of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.”
The journalist’s family was disgusted by the US’ refusal to condemn Israel, declaring they were “incredulous” regarding the supposedly inconclusive results given the many eyewitness accounts of the shooting. They also demanded to know the extent to which US funds “were involved” in her killing.
