Highland Park shooting suspect was ‘known to law enforcement’
Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, the suspect in the Highland Park parade shooting Monday was taken into custody Monday evening.
WGN Investigates looked into Crimo’s background.
Crimo was a prolific poster online where he apparently went by the name “Awake the Rapper.” His videos foretell his alleged violent acts. In one, he appears to dramatize a school shooting. In another video, Crimo appears to animate his own demise in a confrontation with police.
His postings informed the operation to arrest him.
Highland Park’s mayor Nancy Rotering also confirmed to WGN Investigates she has a connection to the suspect. She said his father unsuccessfully ran against her for mayor in 2019.
Investigators have only just begun to piece together the motive and method of this murderous rampage.
Police said the 22-year-old suspect was “known to law enforcement.” One question that will be asked in the days to come: Were they aware of the violent videos that have been online for many months?

Op-ed: The Real Ramifications of the Rentboy Raid
Why the dissolution of Rentboy is more dangerous than the website ever was.
The federal government’s recent attack on Rentboy.com is a devastating assault on some of the most vulnerable members of our community — young adults who, for the first time in their lives, were able to earn a secure living safely through Rentboy after surviving family rejection and homelessness because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
As the cochair of #BornPerfect, the National Center for Lesbian Rights’ campaign to end the dangerous practice of conversion therapy, I have both seen and lived through the harms experienced by LGBTQ youth who are rejected by their families and left with no means to obtain an education or employment. Many of these youth are still struggling to survive as young adults. For some, working as a paid escort through Rentboy has been a lifeline out of homelessness, despair, and the dangers of living on the street.
Rentboy.com may or may not have broken the law. I don’t know. But I do know, from the frantic emails filling my inbox, that the raid on its headquarters has thrown many gay, bisexual, and transgender young adults into turmoil as their main source of income has been ripped away due to irresponsible and archaic views of sex work.
Organizations like Amnesty International and the World Health Organization support the decriminalization of sex work. And recently five major LGBT organizations, including the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the National Center for Transgender Equality, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, the Transgender Law Center, and Lambda Legal, have all come out in support of Amnesty International’s August 11 resolution supporting sex worker human rights.
Why do they care? The same reason I do. Because sex work disproportionately affects the LGBT community. Transgender people engage in sex work at a rate 10 times that of cisgender (nontrans) women. And many LGBT youth engage in sex work just to survive. A 2013 Center for American Progress report suggests that LGBT youth are more than three times as likely to have engaged in survival sex.
I am not a person using sex work to survive. I am, however, overwhelmed with messages from GBT young men who are afraid of having to return to their families, where they face mistreatment, and even worse, because the main and most secure connection they had to income through escorting is now gone.
They are reaching out to me because of my passion for ending conversion therapy, a set of the dangerous and discredited practices linked to severe depression, substance abuse, and even suicide. The connection is horrifying: Many of the young men were forced into conversion therapy by their families — the families to which they may now have to return without a steady income. This makes it my issue.
One of the young men who messaged me said, “I was never harming anyone with the work that I was doing. As cheesy as it sounds, most of the people just wanted a human connection with someone who they could relate to on some basic human level.” Another young man added, “It feels like we had a chance to act with dignity and authenticity for the first time and it was taken away from us.”
They are right. The rent boys weren’t harming anyone. But now these young men might have to return to communities and homes which have rejected who they are. And that’s when the real danger begins.

Robert Crimo’s dad liked Second Amendment tweet days after Uvalde massacre
The father of Robert “Bobby” Crimo III — the person of interest arrested in connection with Monday’s mass shooting in suburban Chicago — liked a tweet supporting the Second Amendment just days after the Uvalde school massacre.
The 22-year-old Crimo, an amateur rapper performing under the stage name “Awake the Rapper,” was taken into custody by the police hours after six people were shot dead and at least 30 others — including several children — were wounded while attending a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park.
It has since emerged that the suspected gunman’s father, Bob Crimo, a longtime deli owner who previously ran a failed campaign for mayor of Highland Park, on May 27 “liked” a tweet that read: “Protect the Second Amendment like your life depends on it.”
The tweet came just days after a shooter made his way into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 19 children and two teachers on May 24.
His Twitter page indicates that the elder Crimo follows just one account — an archived account of former President Donald Trump.
Trump was permanently suspended from Twitter for “incitement of violence” just days after the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol.
In 2020, the younger Crimo attended one of Trump’s rallies dressed as the title character from “Where’s Waldo?”
On his Twitter account, Bobby Crimo also shared a photo of himself wearing a Trump flag as a cape.
Meanwhile, Bob Crimo has operated a local deli, Bob’s Pantry and Deli, for many years. In a business profile published in 2013 by the Chicago Tribune, he was asked why did he decide to open his store in Highland Park.
“Highland Park provides a safe, clean and supportive environment for family-oriented businesses to operate,” Crimo responded at the time.
In 2019, Crimo ran for mayor, calling himself “a person for the people.” He was defeated by the city’s current mayor, Nancy Rotering, a Democrat, whose campaign touted the importance of gun control, reported The Independent.
The shooting in Highland Park — an affluent community of 30,000 residents — took place when a gunman armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire on the crowd from a rooftop overlooking the parade route, sending terrified people running for their lives.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said the five people killed at the parade were adults, but didn’t have information on the sixth victim who was taken to a hospital and died there.
NorthShore University Health Center received 26 patients after the attack. All but one had gunshot wounds, said Dr. Brigham Temple, medical director of emergency preparedness. Their ages ranged from 8 to 85, and Temple estimated that four or five patients were children.
Bobby Crimo was arrested after being pulled over by cops following an hours-long manhunt. Police have not yet formally identified him as a suspect, only referring to him as a “person of interest.”
A look at the 22-year-old’s social media history reveals that the aspiring rapper has been posting disturbing videos and songs, some of which invoked gun violence, school shootings and bloodshed.

And also, I want to say, like, you can’t drill this down to one specific traditional political subculture. I know a lot of people want to point out that this guy was a Donald Trump fan. He had, there were pictures of him draped in a Trump flag or, you know, at a Donald Trump, outside of a Donald Trump motorcade. This guy, this is part of a much larger, deeper subculture that Donald Trump is in the past of, like this guy who grew up as a child, if Donald Trump was his president, he is trying to advance the accelerationism well past Donald Trump.
This guy is part of a new wave of terror, and that’s something that we have to get our brains around right now. This is not, this is not tied to one guy. This is tied to a much larger cell of people who think they’re loners, who are really acting in concert to express their disaffection with the world by murdering a bunch of people. We have to stop that. I don’t know how to stop that. The one thing that you can stop it at the very end is the gun parts. But we have to at least, you know, try to start to learn how people are getting to this point.
