Lemme spell it out. Troop morale is so important that huge amounts of resources are expounded in order to improve the moods, and in turn, fighting ability, in said force.
The destruction was violent to property only, with asthetic and occult applications. If someone were to have died, the message sent wouldn't be as clear as it was. The message sent was "We know what you're up to, and we will destroy any thing you have dedicated to your eugenic goals. The result in the resounding "Hooray!"s are that a few more are taught what it's all about and they want to work toward defeating the eugenicists.
