Ambitious push to bring 200,000 migrants into Australia each year as industry boss describes the severe labour shortage in the economy as 'the worst it’s been in 50 years’

ACCI CEO Andrew McKellar has urged the government to raise the migrant rate

He said a migration rate of 200,000 would help employers hire skilled workers

Mr McKellar said Australia's economy is 'the worst it's been in nearly 50 years'

2022-2023 Migration Program planned for 160,000 migrants, 109,000 workers

The federal government is being urged to consider allowing up to 200,000 migrants into Australia a year and removing the 'red tape' struggling employers face when hiring skilled overseas workers.

Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) CEO Andrew McKellar asked the government to adopt the measure after describing the labour shortage in Australia's economy as 'the worst it’s been in nearly 50 years' on Wednesday.

Mr McKellar said a key reason for Australian businesses continuing to struggle is because employers aren't able to find the skilled workers they need to operate from within the resident population.

The twins were born just weeks before Musk had second baby with Grimes

In April, Musk and Zilis filed a petition to change the twins' names

This was in order to 'have their father's last name and contain their mother's last name as part of their middle name,' according to the court documents

Elon Musk quietly had twins with one of his top executives weeks before he welcomed a child with Grimes via surrogate, court documents have revealed.

In November, the Tesla CEO, 51, reportedly had twins with Shivon Zilis, 36, the director of operations at Musk's brain-machine interface company Neuralink, Insider reported. He now has nine known children.

Musk and Zilis filed a petition in April to change the twins' names in order to 'have their father's last name and contain their mother's last name as part of their middle name,' according to the court documents.

The twins were born in November, just weeks before Musk and Claire Boucher, the musician who performs as Grimes, had their second child via surrogate in December.

'In 2013 I was asked to brief Prince Harry about tech startups,' she tweeted. 'Here I'm telling him how the Basis watch on my wrist came into existence through a crowdfunding campaign. At the time I wondered why he was interested in tech startups. 8 years later we finally know the answer!'

Zilis is currently the director of operations and special projects for Neuralink and has been floated as one of the people Musk could tap to run Twitter Inc after his $44 billion deal acquisition.

In 2020, Zilis posted a tweet defending Musk on his decision to move Tesla out of California over COVID-19 restrictions.

California State Assembly member, Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, had tweeted 'F**k Elon Musk.'

Zilis responded: 'This makes me sad. No one's perfect but I've never met anyone who goes through more personal pain to fight for an inspiring future for humanity - and has done so tirelessly for decades. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but mine is that there's no one I respect and admire more.'

Judge sends former Hawaii Senate Democrat leader to prison for wire fraud

Jamie Kalani English will spend 40 months in prison and pay a fine of more than $100,000 for his role in a bribery scheme.

Former Hawaii Senate Majority Leader Jamie Kalani English will spend 40 months in prison and pay a fine of more than $100,000 for his role in a bribery scheme, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Hawaii.

English and former state representative Ty Cullen pleaded guilty to wire fraud in February. Cullen will be sentenced in October per counsel's request, according to court documents.

The men took bribes in exchange for their votes in the Legislature. English received $10,000 in March of 2020 and $5,000 from someone identified as "Person A" in court documents. He also accepted $1,000, a hotel room valued at $1,805 and $500 to take his family out to dinner, according to court documents.

"As we stated when recommending a term of imprisonment, English, as a prominent leader in the State Senate, shoulders significant responsibility for any deficit of confidence in our public officials," said U.S. Attorney Clare E. Connors in a news release. "He criminally abused the power of his official position to serve his personal interests rather than the people of Hawaii, which is misconduct the federal government will prosecute in order to hold elected officials accountable."

Judge Susan Oki Mollway said it was a "terrifying prospect" that English accepted a bribe as if it was normal, according to the news release.

Cullen received three $5,000 payments, a $2,000 payment, a $3,000 payment and a $10,000 payment between September 2019 to October 2021, according to the court records.

The arrests prompted state lawmakers to pass a bill prohibiting fundraising during the legislative session. The bill is awaiting Gov. David Ige's signature.

Lawmakers also created the Commission to Improve Standards of Conduct through a House resolution. The commission is holding a series of meetings and will file a final report with the house on Dec. 2.

Potential Virginia Mass Shooters Were In US Illegally, One Deported Multiple Times, Police Say

Two men who were allegedly plotting a mass shooting in Virginia are in the state illegally, with one of the men having been deported several times, according to authorities.

Richmond Chief of Police Gerald Smith said during a press conference Wednesday that “a hero citizen picked up the phone and overheard a conversation there was a mass shooting being planned here in the city of Richmond, Virginia,” according to NBC 12.

“There’s no telling how many lives this citizen hero saved from one phone call,” Smith said. “One phone call saved numerous lives on the Fourth of July.”

Authorities arrested 52-year-old Julio Alvarado-Dubon and 38-year-old Roman Balacarcel, who allegedly planned to shoot up Richmond’s Fourth of July celebration. Both men were charged with being non-citizens in possession of a gun. Smith said the men are roommates.

Alvarado-Dubon had two rifles, a handgun and 200 rounds of ammunition and was arrested July 1. Balacarcel was surveilled by authorities and arrested Tuesday with the same charges.

Smith said it was “frustrating” that one of the men had been deported several times and was able to re-enter the country.

The news of the thwarted shooting comes after 21-year-old Robert Crimo fatally shot seven people and injured dozens at a Highland Park, Illinois Fourth of July parade.

Moscow's chief rabbi of 29 years loses post amid exile from Russia

“I am leaving a community in distress. But from the outside, I will do my utmost to help my beloved community,” Pinchas Goldschmidt said.

Pinchas Goldschmidt, who left Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, is no longer the chief rabbi of Moscow after 30 years with the title.

The board of the Moscow Jewish Religious Society voted last month to support a contract extension for Goldschmidt, even though he had been in Israel for some time. But the RBC, a Russian news organization, reported Wednesday that the group, which represents Goldschmidt’s congregation and office, said he no longer had a role there.

“The contract has ended.… There is no question of successors, perhaps there will be none,” Olga Yessaulova, a spokesperson for the group, told RBC. She said Goldschmidt had not been fired.

Goldschmidt left Russia in March, two weeks after outbreak of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His daughter-in-law, the journalist Avital Chizhik-Goldschmidt, said recently that Goldschmidt had been pressured to support the war publicly but had declined to do so.

The community decided not to renew Goldschmidt’s contract despite the board vote, a person with knowledge of the community told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on condition of anonymity, citing concerns for the community’s safety. The decision not to extend Goldschmidt’s contract also owed to safety concerns, the source said.

Contacted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Goldschmidt declined to discuss what happened to result in him leaving the position he had held since 1989.

“As I say goodbye to Moscow and Russia, I am thinking especially of one man: Albert Reichmann, who proposed me for the post of chief rabbi and who had faith in me that I would be able to fulfill that great responsibility,” Goldschmidt told JTA. Reichman, 93, is a Canadian philanthropist who was deeply involved in the revival of Russian Jewry. He is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

“I am leaving a community in distress. But from the outside, I will do my utmost to help my beloved community,” Goldschmidt said.

“I am leaving a community in distress. But from the outside, I will do my utmost to help my beloved community.”

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt

In a statement to his congregants at the Moscow Choral Synagogue, Goldschmidt said: “I wish you all the very best, stay in touch and will provide assistance and support to each of you,” according to RBC.

Russia's rabbis

Other rabbis in Russia, including the country’s chief rabbi, Berel Lazar, and his top spokesperson Boruch Gorin, have remained in the country after expressing concerns about the war.

Lazar and Gorin belong to a Chabad-affiliated group, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, that has long enjoyed strong ties to President Vladimir Putin. The group gained ascendency over all other Jewish organizations in Russia in the early 2000s, helped by the land and funding it received from the Russian government.

Goldschmidt, meanwhile, has had a rockier relationship with Russian authorities. Born in Switzerland and not affiliated with Chabad, the Orthodox rabbi was suddenly denied entry into Russia in 2005, then allowed back in weeks later. Authorities never offered a detailed explanation for the episode but some officials said there had been a “national security issue.”

The trajectory of Goldschmidt’s career increasingly has centered on Western Europe. He has served as the head of the Conference of European Rabbis since 2011.

Biden purges major non-NATO ally

The US president will revoke Afghanistan’s special status, almost a year after the Taliban takeover

US President Joe Biden notified Congress on Wednesday that he will formally revoke Afghanistan’s status as a “Major Non-NATO Ally,” almost a year after the last American soldier left the country on his orders – and the Washington-backed government melted in Kabul away before the Taliban.

Biden has sent an official notice to the US House of Representatives and the Senate of his intent to rescind Afghanistan’s designation, the White House said. It was not clear when the change would take effect.

Afghanistan was originally designated as a MNNA under President Barack Obama in 2012, over a decade after the US invaded and overthrew the Taliban government in Kabul, accusing it of harboring international terrorist Osama bin Laden. The designation helped Washington fully fund Kabul’s military budget for years.

The designation is “a powerful symbol of the close relationship the US shares with those countries and demonstrates our deep respect for the friendship” for them, according to the State Department. While it provides some military and economic privileges, it “does not entail any security commitments to the designated country.”

A total of 20 countries and territories – including Taiwan, an island China considers its rightful territory – have been formally or informally granted this status since the category was created in 1987. Among the benefits the designated countries can expect are the ability to buy surplus US weapons and ammunition, use US financing to buy or lease military equipment, access to maintenance contracts, and the ability to join Pentagon research projects on a shared-cost basis.

Biden’s decision to revoke Afghanistan’s status isn’t surprising as much as overdue. The last US soldier left Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, with the country firmly in Taliban hands by that point. The US-backed government had effectively surrendered Kabul to the Taliban two weeks prior, resulting in the planned departure of US troops turning into a mass evacuation involving diplomats, Western nationals, and over 100,000 Afghans who managed to get to the airport.

Washington has refused to recognize the new government, and has since frozen and partly confiscated the Afghan central bank assets in its possession.
