#OTD in 1966, Marine reconnaissance missions at the Demilitarized Zone at the border between North and South Vietnam observed increasing numbers of troops from the People's Army of Vietnam.

In response, the

’s Task Force Delta and the South Vietnamese Army conducted Operation Hastings beginning on July 15 in an effort to force back the 324th Division of the People’s Army of Vietnam, and decrease the enemy's strength in the northern Quang Tri Province.

Over 8,000 Marines and 3,000 SVA troops engaged the 324th Division, making Hastings one of the largest operations up to this point in the Vietnam War.

Marines and allied forces, lifted by helicopter, patrolled aggressively towards the enemy through the thick jungle. Through heavy ambushes and close-range fire fights, Marines called in air strikes and eventually overran the enemy, forcing them to abandon their base camps.

Operation Hastings ended on August 3, 1966 resulting in a U.S. and South Vietnamese victory, and Marines and allied forces later established forward headquarters at Dong in northern Quang Tri Province.
