Two killed after Tesla slams into Walmart semitruck at rest stop, Florida cops say

Two people were killed when a Tesla crashed into the back of a Walmart semitruck at a Florida rest stop, police told news outlets.
Just before 2 p.m. July 6, a 66-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man were pulling into the parking lot of the Paynes Prairie Rest Area along Interstate 75 in their 2015 Tesla, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
The Tesla then crashed into the back of a Walmart truck in the rest area parking lot, troopers told FOX35. The cause of the crash is unknown, officials told the outlet.
“(The Tesla) came off the exit ramp to the rest area, continued south for a short period, and turned into an easterly direction and that’s at what time we had the collision where the Tesla struck the rear of the tractor-trailer,” a Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson told WCJB.
The 66-year-old driver and the 67-year-old passenger of the Tesla were pronounced dead at the scene, according to WCJB. They were from Lompoc, California, troopers said.
Gainesville Fire Rescue helped pull the two victims from the vehicle, which was trapped underneath the truck, The Gainesville Sun reported.
Photos obtained by the Orlando Sentinel show the Tesla’s hood and front seats crushed under the semitruck.
The rest stop is about 10 miles south of Gainesville.
