Anthony Albanese says New Zealanders might be allowed to vote in Australian elections, after meeting Jacinda Ardern

New Zealanders who have lived in Australia for a long time could be given the right to vote in Australian elections, under potential changes flagged by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Key points:

Voting rights are given to Australians living in New Zealand after a year

An alternate route is already being developed for New Zealanders to obtain Australian citizenship

Mr Albanese said controversial deportations across the Tasman will continue where appropriate

Mr Albanese will ask federal parliament's elections committee to consider what changes could be made to extend voting rights to some New Zealanders.

New Zealand already grants voting rights to Australians living in New Zealand if they have been there for a year or more.

But that right is not reciprocated, except for a small number of New Zealanders who enrolled to vote as "British subjects" prior to 1984.

Mr Albanese said there might be scope to change that.

"We'll be asking the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters to consider whether there's a way to return to systems that have existed in the past of giving New Zealand people who are here in Australia, contributing to society, paying taxes, working, voting rights here in Australia as well," he said.

"We won't pre-empt those processes. But it is, I think, a really common-sense position to at least examine over coming months."

As of the 2021 census, there were more than 530,000 people born in New Zealand living in Australia.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she asked Mr Albanese for "greater acknowledgement" of the contribution New Zealand expats were making to Australia.

Anthony Albanese says Australia will take a 'common sense' approach to deporting New Zealand criminals under Section 501

Anthony Albanese has revealed Australia's position on deporting New Zealand criminals following requests from Jacinda Ardern for a "common sense" approach.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has flagged Australia will use a "common sense" approach to the deportation of New Zealanders convicted of a crime across the Tasman.

The Ardern government has long called for changes to Section 501 of Australia's Migration Act, which has seen the country deport a multitude of criminals who are New Zealand citizens.

New Zealand argues its citizens who have spent the bulk of their lives in Australia should remain in the country and not be deported.

Mr Albanese met with his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern in Sydney on Friday, where the pair discussed Australia's policy of deporting foreign criminals.

"Prime Minister Ardern has certainly not been backward in raising these issues. I can assure you from our very first meeting, 501s will continue to exist," he said.

"We will continue to deport people when appropriate. But we will have some common sense apply here.

"Where you have a circumstance where someone has lived their entire life, effectively, in Australia with no connection whatsoever to New Zealand, common sense should apply and we will act friends and we will work through those issues in a common sense way."

Ms Ardern at a press conference alongside Mr Albanese last month called for Australia to reconsider its policy of deporting Kiwis who often have "zero connection to New Zealand".

She said New Zealand was not calling for Australia to remove its deportation policy but her country was asking for "greater reciprocity".
