Millions Of Canadians Can't Use Debit Cards Due To "Nationwide Internet Outage"

Canada's Rogers Communications Inc. reported widespread network outages on Friday morning, affecting financial institutions, government agencies, law enforcement, businesses, and wireless phone and home internet customers.

"We are aware of issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully engaged to resolve the issue as soon as possible," Toronto-based Rogers tweeted.

Customers were extremely angry with Rogers, responding to the tweet by saying:

"$400/mth for services I can't even fking use. This company is and will always be a fking joke," one person said.

Another said: "for my American followers: Canada has only two companies with telecom infrastructure in the entire country and one of them is currently suffering a complete nationwide outage."

WSJ reports Rogers' customers first reported outages around 0400 ET. Police in Ottawa and Toronto warned residents of connection issues with the 9-1-1 emergency hotline.

"The outage, which appears bigger than the one last year that largely affected consumers, comes as Rogers is attempting to take over rival Shaw Communications," Reuters notes.

There were also significant issues with Interac, a Canadian e-transfer service, which tweeted around 1035ET about "nationwide Rogers outages," impacting debit-card transactions online and at checkout counters.

"This is impacting INTERAC Debit and INTERAC eTransfer. INTERAC Debit is currently unavailable online and at checkout," Interac tweeted.

The Canadian interbank network also said: "INTERAC e-Transfer services are unavailable at most financial institutions, impacting the ability to send and receive payments. We are waiting for updates from Rogers on their resolution."

A spokeswoman for Royal Bank of Canada told WSJ the widespread internet outage is affecting some of its lender's services across the country.

NetBlocks' real-time data confirmed a "major internet courage" across Canada where "national connectivity down to 75% of ordinary levels" this morning.

Another internet tacking website shows a significant loss in online traffic beginning in the early morning hours.

The Canadian government announced on Tuesday that it will destroy 13.6 million expired doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine due to a lack of demand at home and overseas.

According to reports, more than half of all the doses it has ever bought have expired after Canada couldn’t find any foreign countries willing to take the vaccines, despite pledging to donate them.

“Due to limited demand for the vaccine and recipient country challenges with distribution and absorption, they were not accepted,” Health Canada said in a statement.

Back in July 2021, Canada promised to donate the rest of its procured supply, about 17.7 million doses, per CBS.

“The expiration of 13.6 million doses follows the expiration of 1.2 million AstraZeneca doses reported in April and May. Most of the expired doses never left the manufacturers’ warehouses. An unknown but smaller number of doses also expired after distribution to provincial governments,” according to the news release. Continue…

Allowing so-called disinformation online 'erodes the foundations of democracy,' according to government advisers.

Furthering their censorship goals, advisers for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government now say “misleading political communications” needs to be regulated.

According to Blacklock’s Reporter, advisers to Trudeau’s Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, the minister behind internet censorship bill C-11, included among the proposed regulations “private messaging services.”

“A range of harmful content was said to be important to scope in including fraud, cyberbullying, mass sharing of traumatic incidents, defamatory content, propaganda, false advertising and misleading political communications,” wrote Rodriguez’s staff, quoting members of the “Expert Advisory Group on Online Safety” convened by the minister in March.

“Many experts voiced concern over misinformation and disinformation and highlighted it was not included,” they added.

Rodriguez’s staff also stated that the advisers “stressed that Canadians’ ability to have conversations about basic policy disagreements has been severely impacted and complicated by the phenomenon of disinformation,” and allowing so-called disinformation to continue “erodes the foundations of democracy, polarizes people and reduces social dialogue to confrontational encounters.” Continue…

CALGARY, Alberta (Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms) — Canada’s Federal Court has postponed the trial date for the Justice Centre’s legal challenge to strike down the government’s mandatory Covid vaccine requirements for air travellers (the “travel ban”) after the Government of Canada requested the hearing be adjourned.

The September 19 hearing has been rescheduled to Monday, October 31.

In October 2021, the federal government announced that anyone travelling by air, train, or ship, must receive the required number of Covid vaccines in order to travel. The travel ban prevented approximately 6 million vaccine-free Canadians (15% of Canada’s population) from travel within Canada and prevented them from flying out of Canada. Canada’s new definition for vaccination as including required boosters could double or triple the number of affected Canadians should the travel mandate be renewed in the future.

The Justice Centre filed evidence in March 2022 on behalf of 11 witnesses, including five expert witnesses. The evidence filed shows how the Canadians involved in the lawsuit cannot travel to help sick loved ones, get to work, visit family and friends, access health care outside of Canada, take international vacations, and live ordinary lives. Expert medical evidence now filed with the court ranges from scientific evidence about Covid spread among both vaccinated and unvaccinated, risks associated with taking the new Covid vaccines, vaccine harms such as myocarditis and possible effects on fertility, and the superiority of natural immunity.

The Federal Government filed evidence in April on behalf of 16 witnesses, including five experts in defence of the Travel Ban. Justice Centre lawyers spent all of June in cross examination of these government witnesses in preparation for the full trial in fall. Continue…

The Ukrainian government is pressuring Canada not to return a gas turbine to Russia that could boost the supply of Russian fuel to Germany, Reuters and a Ukrainian news site have reported. Kiev argues the precedent would erode anti-Russia sanctions.

Previously, Russian gas monopoly Gazprom reduced the flow through the Nord Stream pipeline to 40% of capacity, claiming that Germany failed to return a Siemens gas turbine from maintenance in Canada. The crucial piece of equipment had become stuck due to Ottawa’s sanctions against Russia.

According to sources in the Ukrainian government cited on Thursday and on Friday by Reuters and the Ukrainian news website Evropeyskaya Pravda, Kiev was informed that Canada had decided to return the turbine. Officials in Ukraine argued that it was a bad move.

“If, God forbid, this decision is approved, we will undoubtedly appeal to our European colleagues that their approach must be reassessed,” a source in Ukraine’s Energy Ministry was quoted as saying by Reuters. “Because, if countries do not follow decisions they have agreed about sanctions, how can we talk about solidarity?”

Both outlets said Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko had lobbied Canada not to return the turbine, claiming that Russia could ramp up gas supplies to Germany. The Ukrainian newspaper said the minister had sent a two-page letter to his Canadian counterpart, Jonathan Wilkinson, on June 22, in which he explained that more Russian gas could be pumped through Ukraine.

Kiev is concerned that by bowing down to what it considers Russian energy blackmail, Canada would set a bad precedent for the Western sanctions regime.

Germany activated the second phase of its gas emergency plan after Russia reduced supplies through Nord Stream. Berlin reportedly asked Ottawa to return the turbine before 10 days of scheduled maintenance starts on the pipeline next week.

During a press conference last week, I interrupted Chrystia Freeland to ask whether Canada sent special forces to fight Russia in Ukraine. I also queried the deputy prime minister on whether Canada was at war with Russia and if she’s concerned about the possibility of nuclear war. I also asked if she considered NATO an aggressive alliance.

Before receiving a response, I was ushered out of the room at the Maison du développement durable in Montréal. But a reporter later asked Freeland about a New York Times report that Canadian special forces are working with US, British, Lithuanian and French counterparts in Ukraine. The elite troops are assisting Ukrainian forces with training and intelligence gathering. According to that article Canada’s secretive commandos are operating alongside a CIA mission to help coordinate US intelligence support for Ukraine’s war effort.

In her response, Freeland refused to confirm the deployment, instead focusing on the illegality of Russia’s actions. While most Canadians would agree with Freeland’s description of Russia’s horrendous invasion, we deserve to know if we are at war with a nuclear-armed state. Continue…
