Kashmir flash floods leave 16 dead

Flash floods swept away hundreds of tents near a popular Hindu pilgrimage site in Kashmir, leaving 16 people dead and dozens more missing, officials said Saturday.

"We found 16 bodies so far and at least 40 are missing," an official from the state disaster response agency told AFP.

"Security forces and all the rescue teams are looking for the missing and injured," the official said on condition of anonymity, due to his lack of authorization to speak to the media.

The disaster prompted the Indian army to deploy two infantry battalions and special forces units to help with the search.

The rescue teams have so far taken 63 people with injuries away for treatment, including to a field hospital set up by the army in the mountains.

"We were a group of 150 and 30 of us are still stuck up there. Their phones are switched off," a pilgrim who managed to escape said.

This is the first time the pilgrimage is held since 2019 following a two-year-long suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kashmir is the cause of disputes between India and Pakistan, as it lies between the two states and the majority of its population is Muslim, while it remains under Indian rule.

I saw 2 clips the other day that made me totally disgusted. The first one dated back when there were riots in the States (not sure but I think it was those of Oregon) and the journalist was on the streets, talking with the people suffering from the riot damage and to the people helping them. He walks a couple of neighborhoods away and he ask shop owners and residents about the event. They all gave them similar answer saying that riots are bad, but as long as it's not their shop or house vandalized or burned, they are not concerned by what is happening.

The second clip was a test being done about how people react when I child is kidnapped in broad daylight, right in front of people. None reacted and they kept on walking as if nothing was going on and minding their own business. This tells a lot where we reached as a society.

Same goes for all the clips we saw online about some punks beating people up, while people passing by as if nothing was happening. This is all the result of the programing.

Sri Lankan PM resigns, parliament speaker becomes interim

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to resign to pave the way for an all-party government, the prime minister's office confirmed on Saturday.

"Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has told the Party Leaders that he is willing to resign as Prime Minister and make way for an all-Party Government to take over," the prime minister's office said in a statement.

"He says he is taking this decision in view of the fact that island-wide fuel distribution is due to recommence this week, the World Food Program Director is due to visit the country this week and the Debt Sustainability report for the IMF is due to be finalized shortly," the statement indicated.

Wickremesinghe has agreed with the recommendation to resign of the opposition party leaders to ensure the safety of citizens, the statement added.

Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker assigned Interim PM

Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana has been assigned to become the country's interim prime minister by the political party leaders at an emergency meeting called for the resignation of the incumbent prime minister and president, leader of Sri Lanka Congress party Rauff Hakeem said on Saturday.

"At Speaker’s Residence urgent Party Leader’s meeting. Several other Leaders including PM, AKD and Sumanthiran participated via zoom. Decision to ask both President and PM to resign. Speaker to take over as temporary President according to constitution," Hakeem said on Twitter.

Later, Hakeem said that Abeywardana has called on the country's president and prime minister to step down according to an overwhelming request from the political parties.

"Correction to my earlier tweet on consensus to ask PM and President to resign. No consensus as PM disagrees. Speaker however decided to write to President and PM to resign as per overwhelming request," he tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Colombo was rocked by thousand-strong protests. Crowds tore through the barricades surrounding the residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, climbed over the fence, and took control of the area, Sri Lankan media said, publishing multiple videos from the scene. Rajapaksa is reported to have been evacuated.

Heard a funny one about Sri Lanka the other day. There is lake where sewers and all kind of trash are dumped in there. The smell is so bad that people rush away when walking pass it. The people are so angry with the government members, old and current ones, that they pushed their cars into that stinky, bacteria filled pond or lake. Sri Lankan protesters force President to flee palace

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official residence in the capital, Colombo, on Saturday, a top defense source told AFP before protesters, who had gathered around the presidential palace, stormed the compound.

"The president was escorted to safety," the source said, revealing that soldiers fired in the air to prevent the crowds from taking over the palace.

Local private broadcaster Sirasa TV showed crowds entering the residence that used to be highly guarded by security and military personnel.

In response, Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned an urgent cabinet meeting to discuss a "swift resolution" to a potential power vacuum after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official residence Saturday.

Wickremesinghe, who is next in line of succession if Rajapaksa resigns, invited political party leaders to join the meeting and also asked for parliament to be convened urgently to discuss the crisis, his office said in a statement.

The storming comes as Sri Lanka suffers through months-long food and fuel crises, power blackouts that would go on for the majority of the day, and soaring inflation rates as the country ran out of foreign currency to import key goods.
