Shinzo Abe's grandfather, Nobusuke Kishi, served on Tojo's cabinet at the time WW 2 broke out and co-signed the declaration of war against the United States on December 7, 1941. After the war was over, Japan's wartime Prime Minister Hideki Tōjō was executed in 1948. At this same time, Shinzo Abe's grandfather who had been in jail for three years and who was classified as the same level of war criminal as Tojo, was set free and his charges were dropped. Nobusuke Kishi, Shinzo Abe's grandfather, who had worked alongside Tojo for the entire duration of the war eventually became the Japanese Prime Minister in 1957.
