Trump-DeVos ties loom over Michigan GOP primary races

Lansing — Michigan's Aug. 2 primary election could test the influence of former President Donald Trump's endorsement against the experience and campaign operation of the DeVos family, a longtime force within state Republican politics.

So far, Trump has endorsed nine GOP candidates for the state Legislature who are in primary races this summer. In recent weeks, two prominent political action committees tied to the DeVos family, the Michigan Freedom Network and the Great Lakes Education Project, have announced support for competing candidates in eight of the contests, according to a review by The Detroit News.

The dynamics loom over the governor's race, where Trump is yet to make an endorsement, but they've already set up a series of proxy battles between an ex-president and the west Michigan-based DeVos family, which includes Trump's former education secretary, Betsy DeVos. She resigned from Trump's Cabinet a day after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol when Trump supporters tried to disrupt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 presidential election victory.
