When Prophecy Fails: A Social and Psychological Study of a Modern Group That Predicted the Destruction of the World is a classic work of social psychology by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter, published in 1956, detailing a study of a small UFO religion in Chicago called the Seekers that believed in an imminent apocalypse. The authors took a particular interest in the members' coping mechanisms after the event did not occur, focusing on the cognitive dissonance between the members' beliefs and actual events, and the psychological consequences of these disconfirmed expectations. One of the first published cases of dissonance was reported in this book.

Go nuts. I'm digging in between mental breakdowns. I snap out of them a lot quicker than I use to so I got that going for me, which is nice. And someday, I will stop quoting TV & movies & stupid phrases stuck in my head since forever. They put that in there to laugh at me huh. What her say this over & over again etc etc.

I thought it was so funny that when i was a teen, someone said they thought it'd be funny when thy have kids, thy will teach them the opposite of everything, the sky is green, kind of thing. when i ran into them years later, i reminded them about that because it was funny & boy did they nervous laugh that away & say they didnt remember That has happened more than a few times to me
