Tonya Ugoretz Named Assistant Director of the Directorate of Intelligence
Director Christopher Wray has named Tonya Ugoretz as the assistant director of the Directorate of Intelligence (DI) at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Ms. Ugoretz most recently served as a deputy assistant director in the Cyber Division.
Ms. Ugoretz is the first intelligence analyst to be appointed assistant director of the Directorate of Intelligence, which has authority and responsibility for all FBI intelligence functions.
Ms. Ugoretz joined the FBI in 2001 as a presidential management fellow in the Investigative Services Division as an intelligence research specialist focused on al Qaeda threats against the United States. In 2002, Ms. Ugoretz transferred to the Counterterrorism Division as an intelligence analyst and, in 2003, became the first analyst to serve as the Director’s daily briefer.
In 2006, Ms. Ugoretz began a joint-duty assignment in the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. She also served on the multiagency High-Value Detainee Prosecution Task Force.
Ms. Ugoretz was promoted in 2008 to unit chief in the Directorate of Intelligence, overseeing daily intelligence briefings for the FBI Director and the attorney general and the FBI’s contributions to senior-level U.S. Intelligence Community products. In 2010, she was promoted to section chief in the DI, serving as the FBI’s chief intelligence officer and leading the Bureau’s team of senior national intelligence officers. 
From 2012 to 2018, Ms. Ugoretz served three joint-duty assignments: first as a special advisor with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the El Paso Intelligence Center, then as a senior advisor at the National Intelligence Council in the Office of Transnational Threats. In 2015, she was the first director of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
She was promoted to deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division in 2018, overseeing analysis of criminal and national security cyber threats; cyber policy; private sector engagement; and liaisons with several federal agencies with intelligence and cyber missions.
Ms. Ugoretz earned bachelor’s degrees in international relations and Spanish from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree from the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
