The foundation, one of the world's largest philanthropies, plans to increase its payouts by 50% over pre-pandemic levels, from nearly $6 billion to $9 billion each year by 2026. The foundation is primarily focused on charitable giving that's aimed at improving global health, gender equality and education, among other issues.

The Microsoft co-founder and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, have both pledged to donate the vast majority of their wealth to the foundation they established together 20 years ago, as well as to other philanthropic endeavors.

The couple announced their divorce in May 2021, saying they would work together as co-chairs under a two-year trial period. At the end of that trial, French Gates has the option to resign and receive a payout from her former husband, who would remain in charge of the foundation.

Italy’s government on the brink as 5-Star threatens to boycott confidence vote

The Italian government is close to collapse after the 5-Star Movement said it would boycott a crucial confidence vote in parliament, prompting calls for early elections.

Giuseppe Conte, the former prime minister who leads the populist party, said the funds set aside for a cost of living support package were insufficient and that his senators could not support the bill on Thursday.

“The scenario has changed, we need a different phase,” he told reporters after failing to reach a compromise during talks with the incumbent prime minister Mario Draghi earlier on Wednesday.

3rd arrest made in alleged Colorado election security breach

The former elections manager for a Colorado clerk indicted on charges of tampering with voting equipment has been arrested on allegations that she was part of the scheme, an official said Wednesday.

Sandra Brown, who worked for Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, turned herself in Monday in response to a warrant issued for her arrest on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and attempting to influence a public servant, said Lt. Henry Stoffel of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest was first reported by The Daily Sentinel newspaper.

Peters and her chief deputy, Belinda Knisley, are being prosecuted for allegedly allowing a copy of a hard drive to be made during an update of election equipment in May 2021. State election officials first became aware of a security breach last summer when a photo and video of confidential voting system passwords were posted on social media and a conservative website.

George Pell: father of former choirboy files civil claim against cardinal and Catholic church

A civil claim against Cardinal George Pell and the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne will be heard in the Victorian supreme court on Thursday. The Age reported that the case had been filed by the father of a boy who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Pell.

Pell has always maintained his innocence in the matter. He faced trial over the allegation in 2018 and was convicted but the high court later overturned the verdict and cleared the cardinal.

In December 2018, a Melbourne jury unanimously convicted Pell on five charges relating to two complainants. One of the complainants said Pell sexually assaulted him and another 13-year-old boy in the priest’s sacristy some time in December 1996, after presiding over Sunday solemn mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

The second complainant died of an accidental overdose in 2014, and it is reportedly his father who has made the civil claim.

Federal authorities are investigating alleged sex abuse of minors by New Orleans-area Catholic clergy, sometimes going back decades, on the grounds that the accused men could have violated a federal anti-sex trafficking law by crossing state lines. The investigation could provide another means for abuse victims to make their case against their abusers, and possibly file sex abuse lawsuits against Catholic dioceses and other organizations.

The FBI is probing whether accused priests can be prosecuted under various charges including the Mann Act, which bars taking anyone across state lines for illicit sex. Though some criminal claims may date back to the 1970s, the Mann Act has no statute of limitations. The Louisiana State Police is aiding the inquiry.
