My dad told me that 'tacos' was what people in New Orleans referred to the community from Yugoslavia (Croatia) that came to the city in the late 1890's-1920's. When they were learning English they would be polite saying 'thank you' by sounding like 'taco'. I'm not sure if it was taken as insulting or not. Probably not since they were all sailors.
