Florida failed to conduct thousands of background checks for concealed weapons permit applicants
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services failed to conduct background checks on tens of thousands of applications for concealed weapons permits due to an unresolved issue in the computer system.
A report found that the state stopped using the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, an FBI crime database that flags applicants that have disqualifying history in other states, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The employee in charge of conducting the background checks allegedly suffered from a login issue and eventually stopped trying to access the system.
From February 2016 to March 2017, potentially disqualified people were able to carry firearms in public due to approval without a background check.
The year 2016 broke a record in concealed weapon permit applications in Florida at 245,000 applications. The mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub that left 50 dead in Orlando, Fla., happened in the same year.
State Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam was skewered by political opponents for allowing such a mistake to occur.
"Adam Putnam's rhetoric on guns has been dangerous — but this is far worse," Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a Democratic candidate for governor, said in a statement. "His department's failure to conduct background checks is a dereliction of Putnam's duties, and he should consider whether he is able to continue running for Governor or serving as Commissioner of Agriculture."
