514 employers linked to labour infringements identified across the EU

487 possible victims of different types of exploitation identified during EU-wide joint action week

An EU-wide coordinated action week targeting human trafficking for labour exploitation and related offences took place between 15 and 21 June 2022. The action days, supported by Europol, were led by the Netherlands and co-led by France, Italy, Romania and the United Kingdom and involved 29* countries in total as well as the European Labour Authority and the European Commission. A wide range of law enforcement authorities including police, immigration and border guards, labour inspectorates and tax authorities took part in the coordinated operational activities.

These coordinated actions were implemented as part of the European multidisciplinary platform against criminal threats, known as EMPACT. Established to improve synergies between different institutions fighting serious and organised crime, EMPACT has enabled cooperation between law enforcement and regulatory authorities targeting labour exploitation. The action week mobilised almost 18 500 officers, who searched more than 10 467 locations, 32 525 vehicles and more than 86 000 persons to detect different administrative infringements and criminal offences. These checks led to the detection of a significant number of companies linked to infringements of employment law. About 500 individuals who had been working undeclared were identified during the inspections. This means the employers in question did not ensure that their employees had access to healthcare, insurance in case of accidents, or any other social benefits and rights that they were entitled to according to employment law.

The action week led to:

59 arrests;

487 possible victims of different types of exploitation identified;

About 1 100 workers affected by labour infringements;

514 employers linked to labour infringements;

34 forged documents detected;

~80 new investigations initiated;

715 new inspections/administrative investigations.

Restaurants, healthcare and the mining sector under scrutiny

This year’s inspections focused on a number of labour-intensive sectors such as mining, home healthcare services, nail bars, cleaning services, restaurants and food delivery services. Vietnamese nationals are especially vulnerable to labour exploitation, predominantly in nail bars. Home healthcare is also a sector that is susceptible to exploitation. This is especially difficult to detect as it happens behind the closed doors of households. Eastern European nationals often fall victim to domestic servitude with reports of cases in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Authorities also focused on detecting the possible exploitation of Ukrainian refugees.

*Participating countries

EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

Third party countries: Norway, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Europol coordinated the action days and facilitated the information exchange between the participating countries. Europol provided analytical and operational support on a 24/7 basis and facilitated the real-time exchange of communication between the participating authorities.

Headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands, Europol supports the 27 EU Member States in their fight against terrorism, cybercrime, and other serious and organized crime forms. Europol also works with many non-EU partner states and international organisations. From its various threat assessments to its intelligence-gathering and operational activities, Europol has the tools and resources it needs to do its part in making Europe safer.

Sri Lanka: A Victory for a Non-violent People’s Movement

The people’s movement in Sri Lanka that converged in the last three months achieved its main objective on July 9 with President Nandasena Gotabhaya Rajapakse’s offer to resign.

On this historic day, about 100,000 people gathered in Colombo in a mass mobilisation. They engaged in non-violent direct action against a heavily-armed military and police force and occupied Rajapakse’s office, his official residence, as well as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s official residence. This was an organised expression of popular frustration and anger, due to electricity cuts, fuel and gas shortages, and the rising costs of essential consumer goods.

The night before the main mobilisation, police enforced a curfew on Colombo and surrounding districts. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka immediately issued a statement claiming the curfew was “blatantly illegal and a violation of the fundamental rights of the people”. On the morning of the mobilisation, the station masters were ordered by the defence department — which sits under the president — to suspend train services. The railway unions, including the Station Masters’ Union opposed the suspension of services, but were duty bound. However, when crowds of protesters agitated at the stations, the station masters agreed to resume services.

Many people couldn’t travel to Colombo because of fuel shortages, which have paralysed public buses as well as rail transport. Some people held protests in their own towns. Many walked from different parts of the country and some used bicycles. Some started their journey the previous day from their towns. There were numerous walking caravans and rallies organised in the days leading up to the July 9 mass mobilisation.

This was a mobilisation of citizens emphasising diversity and solidarity, without the intervention of any political parties, and built by a range of dispersed protests that began nearly three months ago.

Convergence of spontaneous protests

The movement emerged in early March with people engaging in non-violent silent protests, holding placards and candles in the evening, as electricity cuts and other shortages were affecting their daily lives. In late March, a collective of activists occupied a struggle zone, known as the Gota Go Gama (Gota Go Village, GGG) in Galle Face, adjacent to the president’s office in the commercial and public administrative centre of Colombo. This followed a peaceful protest in front of the president’s private residence, during which the police used tear gas and water cannons, escalating the struggle.

The activists at GGG articulated the struggle as a non-violent, peaceful protest, independent of political parties. Among the activists were citizen journalists, social media activists, artists, students, religious leaders, lawyers, civil society activists and labour activists. These activists also overlapped with a range of feminists, environmentalists and human rights activists. Some activists were informed by the Arab Spring struggles against authoritarian regimes, global anti-austerity struggles since 2010, and the 2011 Occupy Wall Street movement.

The concept of the GGG soon spread to other urban centres, mainly around Colombo, and the Western Province, the most densely populated part of the island. These were generally led by local youth protesting in a town, in some cases with permanent tents as a gathering point, with loose coordination with other GGGs.

The activists’ target was the president, who is accused of war crimes, assassinations of dissenters, theft and waste of public funds and fomenting patriarchal Sinhala Buddhist nationalism. Elected in 2019, Rajapakse’s three brothers and nephew joined him in the government formed after the 2020 parliamentary elections. Following the 2019 Easter Sunday Bombing, his promise to strengthen national security was a key strategy to gain political power. A former military officer, Rajapakse was also considered a “war hero”and commanded the respect and authority of his supporters.

However, within less than three years, this authoritarian kleptocrat has endured a humiliating defeat by an organised popular peaceful protest movement.

United States Is Paying $1.7 Billion To Health Care Workers… IN UKRAINE!

As the war in Ukraine heads into its sixth month, military aid from the West has become routine, with the US leading the way after so far sending $7 billion in aid to Kiev since February. But the Biden administration isn't just propping up Ukraine's military and aspects of its war-time economy alongside the huge sums of humanitarian aid being regularly sent for the internally displaced refugee problem - the US is now going to pay Ukrainian health care workers.

"Ukraine is getting an additional $1.7 billion in assistance from the U.S. government and the World Bank to pay the salaries of its beleaguered health care workers and provide other essential services," Politico reports Tuesday.

Italian President Rejects Resignation of Prime Minister Draghi

Italian President Sergio Mattarella rejected resignation pf Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the presidential palace said on Thursday.

"The President of the Republic did not accept the resignation and invited the Prime Minister to come to Parliament for a speech in order to give an assessment of the situation that arose as a result of today's meeting in the Senate of the Republic," the statement says.

Earlier in the day, Draghi announced that he would resign from the post of head of government.

"I want to announce to you that this evening I will hand over to the President of the Republic a letter of resignation," the press service of the government's Chigi Palace quotes him as saying.

Prior to that, the Senate of the Italian Parliament expressed confidence in the country's government after one of the members of the ruling coalition, the Five-Star Movement (D5Z), refused to take part in the vote.

"Today's vote in parliament is a very significant event from a political point of view," Draghi said.

According to Draghi, this means that "there is no longer national majority that supported the government from the very beginning."

BBC investigation alleges elite British SAS unit killed 54 Afghan detainees 'in cold blood'

Commandos in Britain's elite Special Air Service (SAS) killed at least 54 Afghans in suspicious circumstances but the military chain of command concealed concerns, a BBC investigation has alleged.

Key points:

The BBC alleges that one SAS unit may have unlawfully killed 54 people in Helmand province between November 2010 to May 2011

The investigation is based on court documents, leaked emails and journalists' travel to sites in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defence says it will consider any allegations should new evidence come to light

Unarmed Afghan men were routinely shot dead "in cold blood" by SAS troops during night-time raids during the long war, and weapons were planted on them to justify the crimes, the four-year probe revealed on Tuesday.

Senior officers including General Mark Carleton-Smith, who headed UK Special Forces at the time, were aware of concerns within the SAS about the operations but failed to report them to military police, it said.

Under UK law governing the armed forces, it is a criminal offence for a commanding officer to fail to inform the military police if they become aware of potential war crimes, the BBC noted.

Mr Carleton-Smith, who retired last month as head of the British army overall, declined to comment to the BBC program Panorama, which said its investigation was based on court documents, leaked emails and its own journalists' travel to sites of the operations in Afghanistan.

The ministry of defence said prior investigations into the conduct of UK forces in Afghanistan found insufficient evidence to bring charges.

"No new evidence has been presented, but the service police will consider any allegations should new evidence come to light," it said in a statement to the BBC.

"The UK armed forces served with courage and professionalism in Afghanistan and we will always hold them to the highest standards."

'Wexner had the money, and he got from Epstein the glamour and smoothness he was seeking': Sordid relationship between Victoria Secret's billionaire Les Wexner and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein is exposed in scandalous detail in new Hulu documentary

New Hulu docuseries investigates the decades-long perverse relationship between the millionaire pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein and his primary benefactor, Les Wexner, the billionaire owner of Victoria's Secret

Epstein was worth an estimated $550m when he committed suicide in prison while awaiting trial for charges of sex trafficking, the bulk of his wealth came from having complete power of attorney over Wexner's finances

'There wasn't a part of Wexner's empire that Epstein didn't have access to,' said journalist Sarah Ellison. 'He had unmitigated control over all his assets.'

Experts interviewed in the doc remain perplexed why Wexner (an infamous control freak) gave carte blanche to a college dropout with no financial experience

One person featured in the series suggests that Epstein had blackmail on the discreet billionaire, others infer that the two might have been in a homosexual relationship, even though both parties categorically denied it

Documentary revels new evidence that Wexner helped paid for Epstein's legal fees when he was first arrested for sexual misconduct with a minor in 2006

Three years after Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell from an apparent suicide, a firestorm of speculation and conspiracy theories continue to surround the life and death of the world's most notorious pedophile. Specifically, his bizarre relationship with Victoria's Secret's billionaire founder Leslie Wexner.

Was Epstein a clandestine intelligence agent in the employ of the US government? Was he an out-of-control financial wizard? Or a blackmailing sociopath who gained fortune and power by threatening the rich and famous with exposure if they failed to pony up?

These questions, along with his perverse professional and personal partnership with the man known as 'the Merlin of the Mall' are investigated in Hulu's latest documentary, 'Victoria's Secret: Angels and Demons.'

Director Matt Tyrnauer details the rise and fall of the lingerie behemoth and Epstein's hypnotic hold over Wexner, whose company L Brands, at one point owned Victoria's Secret, Abercrombie & Fitch, Express, Lane Bryant and Bath & Body Works.

'It never really surprised me, as the Jeffrey Epstein onion unpeeled, what face was on the next layer of the onion. Les Wexner was right at the top,' said journalist Michael Gross in the three part docuseries that premieres today on the streaming network.

The doc sheds light on the cloud of mystery behind Epstein's estimated $550million wealth, and how he, as a college drop out and former high school math teacher, came to have full power of attorney over Wexner's $7.5billion empire.

Former Georgia mayor to spend nearly 5 years in prison for stealing COVID funds

Former Mayor Jason Lary, once considered one of the founding fathers of Stonecrest, Georgia, has been sentenced to serve nearly five years in federal prison for stealing COVID funds that were supposed to go to local businesses and churches.

He initially denied the accusations, but last January, Lary pled guilty to wire fraud, federal program theft, and conspiracy to commit federal program theft for stealing nearly $120,000 in COVID funds issued by the federal government. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash sentenced Lary to 57 months in prison and ordered him to pay restitution for all the money he stole.

“What he did was deplorable. Absolutely deplorable,” Thrash said during sentencing. “At the time of the greatest medical and economic catastrophe in generations, Mr. Lary, instead of being the honest and respectable mayor that he was elected to be … used that as an opportunity to steal.”

FOX5 Atlanta reported that Lary laundered the COVID money through dummy companies he created and that he spent much of the money he stole to pay off his lake house in Macon, Georgia.

Despite Lary's guilty plea and his violation of public trust, his family, friends, and legal team all asked for leniency. Lary is 60 years old and has suffered from recurring bouts of prostate cancer. He walked into the courthouse supported by a cane.

Lary has been “humbled, humiliated, isolated and treated like a leper” ever since he pled guilty, defense attorney Dwight Thomas said in court.

But prosecutors were not swayed by his fragile health, arguing that Lary was suffering from cancer at the same time he was stealing from the people of his city and that granting him leniency would send the wrong message.

Some of his constituents, who feel betrayed by Lary, agree.

“I don’t think he got enough time. I really don’t, because other people who did this as individuals for themselves, they got more time,” said Stonecrest resident Faye Coffield.

“We don’t know how many of those people lost their businesses or face hardship because of what he did,” she added.

Lary did offer an apology to his family and to the community during the hearing. He is scheduled to begin serving his sentence in December, but his health may cause further delays. His attorneys requested that Lary be allowed to serve his sentence at home, but Judge Thrash denied that request.

Lary was the first-ever mayor of the city of Stonecrest, population 59,000, the vast majority of whom are black. He has already paid back $46,000 of the $120,000 he owes in restitution.

Health Canada Approves COVID Vaccines for Babies

Health Canada announced babies just six months old and up are now eligible to receive the Moderna COVID vaccine.

“Today, Health Canada authorized the use of the Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine in children 6 months to 5 years of age. This is the first COVID-19 vaccine authorized in Canada for use in this age group and marks a milestone in Canada’s response to COVID-19,” Health Canada writes.

Health Canada further stated the vaccine is “one of” the most effective ways to protect against COVID-19. However, they failed to mention any other means someone might be protected from COVID.

To this point, studies suggest that unvaccinated individuals with natural immunity are more protected against re-infection than vaccinated are from being infected the first time and are equally as protected as those with ‘hybrid immunity’ (i.e., those who got the vaccine and then got infected).

Additionally, it’s likely that most children have already developed natural immunity. Regardless, Health Canada stated that the vaccine’s benefits outweigh the risks for toddlers — but they’ll keep a close eye on things because they lack long-term data.

“Health Canada has placed terms and conditions on the authorization requiring Moderna to continue providing information to Health Canada on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in this younger age group. This will provide the Department with more data from ongoing studies and real-world use to ensure that the benefits of the vaccine continue to outweigh any risks, as well as to detect any potential new safety signals in any age group.”

Scott Morrison accuses China of supporting Putin’s war crimes

In his return to the world stage, the former prime minister has lashed out at China for buying Russian wheat instead of Australian grain.

But the former prime minister predicted that despite the bilateral relationship plummeting to its nadir during his tenure, China would long remain Australia’s biggest trading partner.

Morrison made the comments at the Asian Leadership Conference in South Korea – his first public appearance since being ousted from office in May.

Morrison renewed his attacks on China for allowing 7 million people to leave Wuhan in January 2020, despite Chinese officials knowing that a new deadly pathogen responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic was circulating and killing people.

He said China’s unwillingness to co-operate with the international community’s requests to know how the virus originated had been a “major disappointment.”

But his strongest criticisms were in relation to China’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which he said contrasted with the responses of countries that had remained neutral.

He said that Australia was “all in” with Ukraine and wanted it to win, but that the eventual outcome of the war was unclear. “How will end? Nobody knows, is the short answer to that,” he said.

He praised his successor, Anthony Albanese, for his decision to increase Australia’s aid and military support to Ukraine, as well as his recent trip to Ukraine.

“China’s position … was not an ambivalent position and that was very concerning to us and I said so at the time,” Morrison said.

“Other countries have taken a more neutral position – I understand the reasons for that [but] Australia hasn’t – we’re all in with Ukraine.

New South Wales hospitals to bring back some Covid measures

A spike in cases has led to fears that hospitals could eventually become overwhelmed, and Anthony Albanese has called an emergency meeting.

Hospitals in New South Wales are reintroducing some Covid measures to combat the spread of new strains that have led to an explosion in cases.

A spike in cases in recent weeks has led to fears that hospitals could eventually become overwhelmed, and Anthony Albanese has called an emergency national cabinet meeting for Monday.

States are yet to bring back mask mandates or limits on social gatherings, but that hasn’t stopped hospitals from taking measures to slow the spread of the virus.

Some health authorities in NSW will cap the number of visitors allowed in to wards, as well as increasing surveillance testing at hospitals, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Staff will also be forced to wear N95 masks and goggles, although most medical staff are already routinely wearing masks as part of their job.

Meanwhile in Victoria, some elective operations are being delayed because of the new outbreak.

Maricopa County Mail-In Ballots Clearly Reveal Party Affiliation Which Is ILLEGAL

Maricopa County’s early mail-in ballots are sparking concerns among voters whose party affiliation is clearly displayed in the corner of their envelope.

The Gateway Pundit reported that early voting started in Arizona, and the democrats are doing everything in their power to steal another election from MAGA Republicans. The Primary Election will officially take place on August 2nd.

Maricopa County’s mail-in ballots are a clear and direct violation of SB1002, which was signed into law by the Governor on March 18, 2021. Arizona Statutes have been updated to read, “The officer charged by law with the duty of preparing ballots at any election shall: Ensure that the ballot return envelopes are of a type that does not reveal the voter’s selections OR POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION and that is tamper evident when properly sealed.”

This creates a serious election integrity concern for bad actors who seek to abuse Republican ballots.

The Gateway Pundit reported extensively on the law violations that occurred in Maricopa County’s 2020 Election that was rigged and stolen from President Trump. The Maricopa County full forensic audit and “2000 Mules” investigations discovered hundreds of thousands of potentially fraudulent ballots, missing ballots, and ballots with no chain of custody.

Liz Harris and Captain Seth Keshel, two Patriots who led a canvass of Maricopa County homes, calculated that over 173,000 votes were LOST. 34.23% of canvassed voters who were recorded with no vote said they had voted.

The Gateway Pundit obtained a copy of a concerned Maricopa County voter’s email to the Arizona Attorney General’s Election Integrity Unit. Elected officials and AZGOP officials are CC’d in the email.
