Head of British Embassy in Myanmar forced to leave

YANGON (Eleven Media Group/Asia News Network): Pete Vowles, the head of the British Embassy in Myanmar, wrote on his Twitter account that his duties in Myanmar were suddenly suspended on Wednesday.

He said he was saddened by the instructions of State Administration Council to force him to leave Myanmar.

But Vowles added that he was glad "we didn't cave to pressure to legitimise" the military takeover.

In addition, even though he had to leave the country, the members of the team who remained in Myanmar would continue to stand up and do everything they could for the people of Myanmar who wanted nothing more than peace, freedom and justice, he tweeted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not commented on the matter so far.

Vowles had been head of the British Embassy in Myanmar since August 2021.

Rep. Lauren Boebert’s gun-themed restaurant in downtown Rifle, Colorado, was a key element in her 2020 congressional campaign.

However, it appears that Shooter’s Grill is no more — at least for now.

According to Colorado’s Post Independent, Boebert indicated that the building’s new landlord is refusing to renew the restaurant’s lease.

However, a sign in front of the restaurant’s front door says, “Thanks for the support. Stay tuned. #covfefe“

“We were like a family,” Boebert said of her restaurant when she closed its doors on Sunday.

The restaurant came about after Boebert spent time ministering to female inmates in the Garfield County Jail; she wanted to help them and give them a place to “trade their shame for glory.”

“I would say Shooters, for any employee, was their life. We lived and breathed it every single day,” Boebert said.

“They were a part of this culture and brand that we created in Rifle, and there was a lot of pride with that.”

Boebert’s nod to a viral typo in one of former President Trump’s tweets suggests that Shooter’s Grill could soon become Shooter’s Covfefe.

In a statement provided to the Post Independent, Boebert indicated that her business would possibly reopen as a bakery. “It may look like a Shooter’s coffee shop with pastries and some easy breakfast sandwiches and merchandise,” the conservative firebrand said.

“We would just dramatically scale it back because, obviously, we’re not in our building.”

Shooter’s Grill was known for its pro-Second Amendment theme. Staff and management, such as Boebert, frequently open carried weapons on the premises.

Boebert rose to local prominence when she confronted Beto O’Rourke in a town hall, blasting him for his plan to forcibly confiscate legal firearms from American gun owners.

The conservative congresswoman is frequently a target of the progressive left, having shown herself willing to trade rhetorical barbs with President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Boebert won renomination in her district late last month despite liberals and some Republicans flocking to support her primary challenger.

Milken Enterprises is responsible for declining to renew the restaurant’s lease.

“It’s been an amazing journey. I don’t regret anything. It’s always sad to close a chapter. But this is where we’re at,” Boebert said.

Man acquitted in 1985 Air India terror attack shot dead in Canada

A man who was acquitted in the 1985 Air India terror bombing that killed 329 people was shot dead outside of Vancouver, Canada Thursday morning, a report said.

Ripudaman Singh Malik was killed while sitting in his car outside a business center in Surrey, according to The Toronto Star.

Malik, 75, and Ajaib Singh Bagri were exonerated of mass murder and conspiracy charges in 2005 after being blamed for the plane explosion near Ireland that killed 280 Canadians and a bombing at a Tokyo airport that killed two baggage handlers, the paper said.

They were arrested in 2000 for the massacre and accused of targeting India’s national airline in retaliation for the government’s deadly raid on a sacred Sikh spiritual site. Malik and Bagri were set free after key prosecution witnesses were deemed unreliable, the outlet said.

It was reportedly unclear if Malik’s “targeted” murder was related the atrocities he had been tied to.

A suspect’s car was found nearby in flames shortly after the 9:30 a.m. shooting, according to the outlet.

“The investigation is in the early stages and police are still looking for the suspect and a second vehicle that may have been used as a getaway vehicle,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reportedly said.

A car wash worker who heard the ambush ran outside and found Malik injured, according to The Canadian Press.

“There was three gunshots. One hit on the neck, that’s it. And I just took him out. He was alive,” the man said.

“It’s shocking,” longtime friend Asaf Gill told the paper. “He was acquitted for some reasons. Who is somebody else to take the law into their hands?”

Malik, a multi-millionaire businessman, emigrated to Canada from India in 1972 and became an influential member of British Columbia’s Sikh separatist movement, according to The National Post.

After working as a cab driver, Malik founded a credit union and private school for community members, and was remembered for his teachings of faith, his son said on Facebook.

“The media will always refer to him as someone charged with the Air India bombing. He was wrongly charged, Jaspreet Singh Malik wrote. “The media and RCMP never seemed to accept the Court’s decision and I pray today’s tragedy is not related.”

Another suspect, Inderjit Singh Reyat, was reportedly convicted and spent 30 years in prison for helping to build the bombs in the terror attack. Alleged ringleader Talwinder Singh Parmar was killed by police in 1992.

The US embassy in Kyiv urged Americans to leave Ukraine immediately for security reasons, and warned them not to attend "gatherings and participate in public events" there.

"The US Embassy urges US citizens not to visit Ukraine, and calls on Americans in Ukraine to leave immediately, via available ground transportation…if it is safe," the diplomatic mission said in a warning distributed Thursday.

The US embassy also warned against "mass gatherings and participation in public activities" in Ukraine, against the backdrop of the "missile threat".

Diplomats advised their citizens in Ukraine to "seek shelter immediately" in the event of a large explosion or sound of sirens, not to approach "any debris" during missile attacks and that if missiles or drones are intercepted, their debris could pose a threat.

According to the US diplomatic mission, "the security situation throughout Ukraine is unstable, and the situation there may deteriorate without warning."
