Police in a Colombian drug capital were forced to reassure the public after 1.5 tonnes of incinerated marijuana formed a cloud over the city.

Residents in Medellin suburb Bello described a 'tremendous smell of marijuana' after cops burned stockpiles of the confiscated drug early on Tuesday.

But as the day became windier, the cannabis smoke began to drift across the city, engulfing Bello locals in the distinctive smell.

Local reports suggested several tower blocks were evacuated.

UNICEF warns of 'child health crisis' with vaccination coverage the lowest in a generation thanks to COVID-19 pandemic

Around 25 million children around the world missed out on routine vaccinations that protect against life-threatening diseases last year, as the knock-on effects of the pandemic continued to disrupt health care globally.

That is 2 million more children than in 2020, when COVID-19 caused lockdowns around the world, and 6 million more than pre-pandemic in 2019, according to new figures released by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO).

UNICEF described the drop in vaccination coverage as the largest sustained backslide in childhood vaccination in a generation, taking coverage rates back to levels not seen since the early 2000s.

Many had hoped that 2021 would see some ground recovered after the first year of the pandemic, but the situation actually worsened, raising questions over catch-up efforts.

"I want to get across the urgency," UNICEF's senior immunisation specialist, Niklas Danielsson, told Reuters.

"This is a child health crisis."

The agency said that a focus on COVID-19 immunisation campaigns in 2021, as well as the economic slowdown and strain on healthcare systems, had stymied a quicker recovery for routine vaccinations.

Coverage dropped in every region, showed figures estimated using data on the take-up of the three-dose diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) jab.

That included children who get no doses at all as well as those who missed any of the three doses necessary for protection.

Eight people charged over theft of electronic devices from Brisbane Airport

Eight people are expected to face Brisbane Magistrate’s Court today (15 July, 2022) charged over the theft and distribution of multiple electronic devices allegedly stolen from air freight flights at Brisbane Airport.

Between February and November 2021, the AFP Aviation Crime Targeting Team Brisbane (ACTT) received reports from Australian Border Force (ABF) that pilfered packages had been found in the Security Restricted Area of the airport.

Investigations revealed a Bracken Ridge man, 41, and a Deception Bay man, 40, who were both freight handling employees, had allegedly used their access to the restricted area to steal multiple iPhones, iPads, Samsung mobile phones and phone accessories from freight packages over the nine-month period.

The two men allegedly involved other family members and associates to sell the devices for cash and drugs.

In March 2022, the men were arrested and each charged with:

One count of theft in the course of post contrary to section 471.1(1) and 11.2A(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth); and

Dealing with property reasonably suspected of being the proceeds of crime contrary to section 400.9 (1A) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for these offences is 10 years’ imprisonment. Further charges are pending on both men, and one other receiver of goods.

Airport Police Commander Brisbane Airport Superintendent Mark Colbran said trusted insiders who abused their employment and security credentials were a key focus for investigators seeking to stamp out crime in secure areas.

“The AFP will continue to work closely with our partners to stop those who act in their own self-interest to the detriment of their employers,” Superintendent Colbran said.

“I urge the public and those working at ports who hear or see anything suspicious, whether it’s an employee or your employer, to report it to the AFP by calling 131 AFP.”

Investigators have also charged six other people for their alleged involvement in receiving items stolen from the airport.

The four women and two men have all been charged with the same offence of receiving goods stolen in the course of post contrary to section 471.2(1) and 11.2A(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for these offences is 10 years’ imprisonment.

The alleged offenders include a Morayfield woman, 51; a Munruben woman, 39; a Deception Bay woman, 37; a Clontarf woman, 32; a New Farm man, 44; and a Caboolture South man, 38.

Biden is escalating the Russia-Ukraine conflict, risking a catastrophic fight with Moscow, an ex-congresswoman has warned

President Joe Biden’s administration is driving the world toward a devastating nuclear conflict by using the Ukraine crisis to fight a “proxy war” with Russia, former congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard has warned.

“The American people need to understand the seriousness of the situation that the Biden administration and leaders in Washington have put us in,” Gabbard said on Wednesday night in a Fox News interview. The Hawaii Democrat, who was among the candidates whom Biden defeated to win his party’s 2020 presidential nomination, called for stepping back to focus on “the big picture and the great threat that we face, which is the reality that this war is continuing to escalate.”

Biden has led the charge for international sanctions to punish Moscow over its military offensive in Ukraine. The US has approved $70 billion in aid, including advanced weaponry, to help Ukraine fight Russian forces. During a visit to Israel on Thursday, Biden said Washington will continue to provide such aid indefinitely to ensure that Moscow suffers “a strategic failure” in Ukraine.

“President Biden himself says he has no idea when or how it’s going to end, but we know where this escalation leads,” Gabbard said. “It leads us closer and closer to the brink of a nuclear war with Russia.”

Biden’s anti-Russia campaign has contributed to the highest US inflation rate in more than 40 years, including record gasoline and diesel prices. Nevertheless, Democratic and Republican war hawks alike have backed the strategy. After voting to approve a $40 billion Ukraine aid package in May, US Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) said, “Investing in the destruction of our adversary’s military, without losing a single American troop, strikes me as a good idea.”

Gabbard argued that US leaders are being cavalier about the crisis, ignoring the risk of triggering a catastrophic war with Russia. She gave the example of a recent public service announcement, or PSA, in New York City, which advised residents to stay indoors in the event of a nuclear attack.

“I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that PSA because it’s insane,” Gabbard said. “They’re treating us as though we’re like back in the ’50s and ’60s when teachers are telling kids to go under your desk and you’ll be protected from a nuclear attack. It’s crazy.”

Magnet Meat: Magnetogenetics?

What is known is that scientists have been working to imbue living cells with magnetic properties in order to externally manipulate cellular activities using magnetic fields. In 2019, researchers successfully engineered genetically-encoded protein crystals that can generate magnetic forces.

Ferritin is a natural iron-storage protein which can self-assemble into a “cage” that holds as many as 4,500 iron atoms but the magnetic forces generated are too small for practical applications. Chinese researcher, Bianxiao Cui combined the iron-binding ability of ferritin with the self-assembly properties of another protein, called Inkabox-PAK4cat, which forms huge, spindle-shaped crystals inside cells.

Cui fused genes encoding ferritin and Inkabox-PAK4cat and expressed the new protein in human cells in a petri dish. In three days, the resulting crystals grew to about 45 microns in length (or about half the diameter of a human hair), without killing the host cells. These protein crystals are attracted to an applied magnetic field and move toward magnets even while embedded within living cells.
