Ukraine gets its first US-made M270 missile system

The delivery of rocket launchers was announced by Ukraine’s defense minister

Kiev has received its first M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System), Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexey Reznikov announced on Friday. The system will be “good company” for US-supplied М142 HIMARS launchers, the minister said in a Twitter post.

While Reznikov did not elaborate on who exactly supplied the US-made system, as he extended his gratitude generally to Ukraine’s “partners,” Britain had previously pledged to deliver at least three systems like this to Kiev’s forces.

The US-made M270 MLRS system is, effectively, an older cousin of М142 launchers, which had previously been supplied to the Ukrainian military by Washington. While the tracked system is less mobile than truck-based HIMARS, M270 packs twice the punch, featuring 12 tubes to launch 227 mm missiles against six.

It was not immediately clear whether the new M270 launchers had already gotten to the frontline or not. The M270 HIMARS system was deployed by Kiev to the battlefield in late June. While Ukrainian officials insist the systems have been used to target “warehouses with weapons and stocks of fuel and lubricants” used by the Russian military, Moscow and Donbass authorities accused Kiev of using the weapons to shell civilian areas.

Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Kiev forces had been using “US-supplied multiple-launch rocket systems HIMARS on all fronts” as of late. The military “has apparently been ordered by Kiev to use the said launchers against civilians without any hesitation,” she claimed, while accusing Washington of sharing intelligence on targets with Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly warned the West against “pumping” Ukraine with weapons, insisting that such aid would only prolong the conflict and inflict further damage on the Ukrainian people rather than change its ultimate outcome.

Tucker Carlson slams ‘corrupt’ Ukraine

The US should focus its energies on countering China, not Russia, the Fox News host argued

Fox News host Tucker Carlson issued a fierce condemnation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday over his crackdown on political opposition. While members of both parties in Washington rail against Russian President Vladimir Putin, “it is China that is on its way to controlling the world,” Carlson claimed.

“What does the cause of liberty have to do with Ukraine?,” Carlson asked. “Well, very little. Last February the Ukrainian government shut down opposition media, then they arrested the leader of the main opposition party. Now President Zelensky has decided to combine all television stations in Ukraine into a state-owned propaganda ministry.”

“What is that?” Carlson continued. “It’s not the profile of a free country. Not even close.”

Lawmakers in both US parties have described the Ukrainian conflict as a battle for democracy itself, with the leaders of America’s allies using similar language. Before condemning Zelensky, Carlson played a clip of Republican Senator Kevin Cramer (North Dakota) declaring that the US should not put a limit on its financial assistance to Ukraine, which he claimed is fighting “back a communist intrusion for the cause of freedom.”

“He’s a communist, says Senator Cramer,” Carlson exclaimed. “You don’t have to like Vladimir Putin to see how absurd this is.”

“Is Vladimir Putin more or less communist than Joe Biden’s domestic policy? Is Putin throwing Americans in jail for attending political rallies at the Capitol? Is he sterilizing children in the name of trans liberation?”

“Whatever his many faults, Vladimir Putin is not doing any of that.”

Carlson argued that China’s economic activities in Africa and its construction of foreign military bases constitute an attempt to build a “Chinese empire.”

“It is China that is on its way to controlling the world,” he declared.

However, despite Carlson’s protestations, countering both Russia and China appears to be the goal of American foreign policy at present.

Pivoting the US’ foreign and defense policy toward China was a core goal of former President Donald Trump, and the Biden administration has largely continued this path, albeit without attempting to disengage from Russia.

Under Biden, the US has formed the AUKUS security pact with the UK and Australia and the Partners in the Blue Pacific (PBP) arrangement with Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Both alliances – AUKUS, a formal security pact, and the PBP, a more informal arrangement – are aimed at countering Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

These new alliances come on top of the 2017 reestablishment of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) between the US, India, Japan and Australia, which China has repeatedly derided as an attempt to build an “Asian NATO.”

Meanwhile, the NATO alliance’s most recent ‘Strategic Concept’ names China as a challenge to its “security, interests and values,” and the US’ latest National Defense Strategy lists the Pentagon’s top priorities as “the [China] challenge in the Indo-Pacific, then the Russia challenge in Europe.”

Saudi Arabia opens airspace to Israeli airlines

Riyadh has agreed to allow overflights by all air carriers in a move hailed by the White House as fostering Middle East stability

President Joe Biden is taking credit for a decision by Saudi Arabia to open its airspace to overflightsby all air carriers, which he claimed will promote greater stability in the Middle East by further integrating Israel with its neighbors.

“Today, I will be the first president of the United States to fly from Israel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia,” Biden said on Friday as he began the second leg of his trip to the Middle East . “As we mark this important moment, Saudi Arabia’s decision can help build momentum toward Israel’s further integration into the region, including with Saudi Arabia.”

Biden said Riyadh’s historic move marks an “important step toward building a more integrated and stable Middle East region.” He added, “While this opening has long been discussed, now, thanks to months of steady diplomacy between my administration and Saudi Arabia, it is finally a reality.”

The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) revealed the new policy late on Thursday, saying it reflected the kingdom’s “keenness” to fulfill its obligations under a 1944 international pact calling for non-discrimination in civil aviation. The decision will also further Saudi Arabia’s efforts to consolidate its position as a global air hub connecting three continents.

Having to bypass the airspace of a country spanning 830,000 square miles has inflated flight times and fuel consumption for Israeli flights toward such Asian destinations as China and India. The new policy is expected to cut hours off the travel times for some routes and will enable Israeli Muslims to catch direct charter flights for the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

“It will be a new era that will bring Asia closer to Israel,” Israir CEO Uri Sirkis told Tel Aviv’s 103 FM radio station.

NASA and Roscosmos agree on spaceflight seat-sharing

The announcement came the same day Russia’s long-time space chief Dmitry Rogozin was replaced

The US and Russia have reached a deal to fly each other’s spacefarers to the International Space Station (ISS). The breakthrough comes after months of tensions and uncertainty looming over joint space activities in the wake of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Both Russia’s space agency Roscosmos and its American counterpart, NASA, confirmed on Friday that they have agreed on the so-called “integrated flights.” The ultimate goal of the agreement is ensuring that at least one US astronaut and one Russian cosmonaut are present at the ISS to maintain respective segments of the station, Roscosmos explained.

“The agreement meets the interests of Russia and the United States and will promote the development of cooperation within the International Space Station program framework,” the agency said in a statement.

A NASA spokesman, Josh Finch, emphasized that “flying integrated crews ensures there are appropriately trained crew members on board the station for essential maintenance and spacewalks.” The deal is a “no-exchange-of-funds arrangement,” Finch stated, and includes all the necessary training as well as “transportation to and from the International Space Station and comprehensive mission support.”

“It also protects against contingencies such as a problem with any crew spacecraft, serious crew medical issues, or an emergency aboard the station that requires a crew and the vehicle they are assigned to return to Earth sooner than planned,” he added.

The first mission under the arrangement, involving NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin, is set to take place in late September. The crew will use the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to reach the ISS.

Another mission, scheduled for the autumn as well, will fly a US Crew Dragon spacecraft. The mission will likely involve the only woman in Russia’s active cosmonaut roster, Anna Kikina, Roscosmos revealed.

The apparent breakthrough in NASA-Roscosmos ties comes after months of tensions sparked by the ever-worsening relationship between the two countries, further aggravated by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The announcement of the deal also coincided with the dismissal of Russia’s long-time space chief, Dmitry Rogozin, who got replaced with Yury Borisov in a government reshuffle on Friday.

Biden comments on ‘vacuum’ in Middle East

While the US president said he would “continue to lead in the region,”China’s foreign minister said that was not in his purview

President Joe Biden told reporters on Thursday that the US would “continue to lead” in the Middle East, in order to stop Russia and China from filling a “vacuum.” Beijing took a dim view of his words, responding that only the “people in the Middle East are the masters of the Middle East.”

Biden’s first trip to the Middle East as president began in Israel this week, where he signed a joint declaration with Prime Minister Yair Lapid, guaranteeing continued US support and affirming “never to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.”

In a press conference with Lapid after the signing, Biden suggested that his trip – which takes him to Saudi Arabia on Friday – marks a resurgence in US influence in the region.

Biden told reporters that the US under Donald Trump “made a mistake of walking away from our influence in the Middle East,” and that his planned meeting in Jeddah with the heads of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) would give him the chance to “promote US interests” with these nine Arab states.

Republicans in the US tout the Trump Administration’s negotiation of the Abraham Accords – which saw Israel normalize relations with some of its Arab neighbors – as proof that the US didn’t “walk away” from the region while Trump withdrew from the US’ Middle Eastern conflicts.

However, China declared on Friday that the countries of the region were free to choose who they conducted trade and diplomacy with.

“People in the Middle East are the masters of the Middle East. The Middle East is not the backyard of any other country and there is no such thing as a ‘vacuum’ to speak of,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters.

“People in the Middle East yearn for development and security more than anything else,” Wang continued. “For a long time, China has always supported people in the Middle East independently choosing the path of development and supporting Middle East countries in resolving regional security issues in solidarity and coordination.”
