What does the term "egg" really mean and where did it come from?

I first encountered the term "egg" in this meme which says that it's someone who hasn't figured out yet that they're trans. The moment they figure it out, it's called cracking or hatching.

From what I've seen, the term egg is only used for trans people and not for other members of the LGBT+ community. For example, if someone hasn't figured out yet that they're gay, they are not a "gay egg". On r/lgballt, the flair called "Egg" is an egg-shaped ball with the trans flag colors on it.

The subreddit r/egg_irl contains "memes about trans people who don't know they're trans yet", which is already paradoxical in itself because if you know you're an egg then you've already figured it out. Yet, the subreddit is full of self-proclaimed eggs begging other redditors to crack them.

egg_irl's second-most upvoted post says that being an egg doesn't mean you'll inevitably come out as trans but simply taking time to figure yourself out, regardless of the result. That would mean that being an egg means being gender-questioning. Which contradicts many statements I read about people describing themselves as eggs before they started questioning or when they were still in denial.

I've also read a story about someone hatching twice. The first time, they figured out that they are not their AGAB. The second time, they figured out that they are NB.

According to this webcomic, the pre-transition body of a trans person is the eggshell, protecting the bird while it is still inside. But once you hatch, you don't need the eggshell anymore. If this has anything to do with the term egg then that would mean that eggs are not trans people who haven't figured themselves out yet but trans people who haven't transitioned yet.

But is that really the origin of the term? If not, what is? Where did this term come from? And what does it really mean?

Also, is it better to say cracking or hatching? Hatching feels more like something that will naturally happen on its own, but cracking enables people to say "what finally cracked them".
