Now boys,

perhaps P stands for PURPLE !

Tyrian Purple was named after the Phoenician city of Tyre, where the dye was first produced in the Bronze Age.

Tyrian purple was made from the secretions of a certain sea snail, called a Murex. It took thousands of these snails to produce even a small amount of usable dye, making Tyrian purple extremely expensive.

The Phoencians in Tyre were the

only people in the world who knew how

this dye was made, and all of the rich

people were willing to pay anything to

obtain fabric dyed in this most exclusive

shade !
