Timeline for delivery of crucial Russian gas pipeline part revealed

The Russian pipeline equipment left Canada for Germany on Sunday, Kommersant reports

A crucial turbine from the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline was airlifted from Canada to Germany on Sunday, Kommersant newspaper has reported, citing its sources.

The part will then travel for another five to seven days by ferry to its destination in Russia, the paper revealed on Monday. If everything goes smoothly and there’s no delay at customs, the turbine will be fitted and ready to pump gas in early August, Kommersant noted.

The Siemens turbine was stuck in Canada after undergoing repairs there due to Ottawa’s Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia.Canada initially refused to return the part, as it regarded the equipment as a dual-use product subject to sanctions. After negotiations with Berlin, however, Ottawa decided to use an indirect delivery route to avoid violating its own sanctions against Moscow.

The delay forced Russian gas exporter Gazprom toslash exports of natural gas to Germany by as much as 60% last month, as the pumping station was technically unable to pump at normal levels without the turbines. (Force Majeure)

The Nord Stream pipeline is an important route for gas exports from Russia to the EU because it offers direct deliveries to Germany, bypassing Ukraine. Deliveries via the pipeline were temporarily stopped on July 11 for 10 days of scheduled maintenance.

German industry could shut down without Russian gas – FT

A lack of energy supplies may bring the EU’s top economy to a halt, the paper reports

Industrial companies across Germany are facing a real prospect of scaling down operations or shutting down completely if natural gas flows from Russia stop, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

According to the publication, Germany’s largest steelmaker ThyssenKrupp and the world’s largest chemicals company BASF have both warned that without sufficient natural gas supply, their factories could be forced to idle or shut down completely, and could even suffer technical damage.

“[Without Russian gas supplies,] we have to stop [production] immediately, from 100 to zero,” said Petr Cingr, the chief executive of SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, Germany’s largest ammonia producer and a key European fertilizer supplier.

The warning comes amid uncertainty over gas supply from Russia, as the country’s state energy giant Gazprom was forced to slash its deliveries via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline by 60% last month over a technical issue stemming from anti-Russia sanctions. The pipeline is currently shut down entirely for annual maintenance that’s due to finish on July 21. However, many in Germany and the EU fear that Russia will not turn the flow back on when the maintenance is completed, for political reasons.

Some companies hope to switch to alternative fuels, such as heating oil or coal, if there’s no gas coming from Russia, FT says. However, according to chemicals industry estimates cited by the publication, only 2-3% of gas consumption can be replaced in this way.

Without Russian gas, Germany will experience a severe fall in industrial output, which will trigger a “deep recession” with almost 6% wiped off GDP by the end of next year, analysts at Swiss bank UBS told FT.

Last month, the German government initiated the second stage of its national emergency plan, with the next step being the introduction of gas rationing. The energy crunch has also led to an eight-fold increase in European benchmark natural gas prices over the past 18 months, driving up the overall cost of living in Europe’s top economy.

(So the story of Russia turning off gas/oil to Germany is gossip and fear mongering)

Russian military given new priority in Ukraine

Sergey Shoigu told his officers to take out artillery supplied by the US

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has told military commanders of the ‘East’ grouping in Donbass to make Ukraine’s long-range weapons their primary target. The order came as he inspected troops stationed around Donetsk, the main city of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Shoigu gave orders to prioritize striking Ukrainian missile and artillery capabilities, due to their use by Kiev in targeting residential areas in Donbass and setting wheat fields and grain warehouses on fire, the Defense Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Ukraine’s long-range arms, which beside Soviet-designed systems include US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, French CAESAR self-propelled howitzers and other foreign hardware, should be hit with high-precision weapons, according to the minister.

On Monday, the People’s Republics of Donetsk said itsterritory had been shelled 53 times from the Ukrainian side over the past 24 hours, with more than 660 projectiles being fired.

During their meeting, the commander of the ‘East’ grouping, Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov, informed Shoigu “about the current situation and the progress achieved in fulfilling the assigned combat tasks of destroying the opposing forces,” the ministry said.

Shoigu’s unannounced tour of the Russian forces in Donbass was first revealed by the Defense Ministry on Sunday, when it said that the minister had inspected the ‘South’ and ‘Center’ groupings, meeting with their commanders, Army General Sergey Surovikin and Colonel General Alexander Lapin.

AWR Hawkins17 Jul 2022

Greenwood, Indiana, police chief Jim Ison described the 22-year-old who shot and killed a mall attacker as the “hero of the day.”

Reuters quoted Ison saying, “The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began.”

Breitbart News reported that a suspect opened fire in the Greenwood Park Mall food court around 6 p.m.

The attacker was able to kill three people before the 22-year-old armed citizen intervened, shooting the attacker dead.

The Associated Press reports that the attacker came into the mall with “a rifle and several magazines of ammunition” and began shooting.

Chief Ison indicated the 22-year-old who killed the attacker was from Bartholomew County and “was legally carrying a firearm.”

MSNBC’s Tur: ‘People Dont Trust Us — They Don’t Believe Us’=

Trent Baker17 Jul 2022

(This person is very dumb)

In a recent interview with The Hill, MSNBC anchor Katy Tur touched on the distrust of the media across the American people.

Noting a new Gallup poll that showed the trust in the media was at “an all-time low,” Tur lamented that “people don’t trust us.” She questioned if the way she was doing her job was “doing more harm than good.”

“There was just a Gallup poll out today that shows that the trust in media, in newspapers and television is hitting an all-time low. People don’t trust us,” Tur outlined. “They don’t believe us, and it makes me wonder if this job, as I’m currently doing it, is effective but if it’s doing more harm than good. I don’t have a good answer for that, so those thoughts linger in the back of my mind. They linger, though, because I do love it, and I do think it’s important. And I’m hoping to find a way to better communicate with people.”

Tur later acknowledged the media struggled to cover former President Donald Trump and his tweets, which she said “made it seem like we were only out to get Donald Trump.” (WTF you were out to get him and still are)

“[I] think that hurt our credibility in the long run,” she advised.
