Reports of modern slavery hit all time high
Reports of modern slavery in the UK reached an all time high this year, with dozens of children in the region being exploited by ruthless gangs.
It comes as Sir Mo Farah spoke publicly about his experience of being a victim of child trafficking and slavery.
The four-time Olympic gold medallist revealed he was brought to the UK illegally from Somalia aged nine by a woman he had never met and was then forced to work as a domestic servant.
Sir Mo’s experience is far from an isolated one with reports of child slavery in the UK reached an all time high in the first three months of 2022.
Thirteen children were among 82 suspected cases modern slavery victims referred to Norfolk police, according to Home Office data.
There were also 29 children suspected of having been exploited referred to police in Suffolk and nine in Cambridgeshire.
Last year there were 66 live police operations into child slavery in Norfolk, 60 in Suffolk and 54 in Cambridgeshire.
Most victims were British and were being forced into criminality often by county lines drugs gangs. Others were children exploited for labour, sexual activities and domestic service.

Beijing vows to defend ‘territorial integrity’ after Washington approved major arms deal with Taiwan
The foreign and defense ministries in Beijing issued harsh statements on Monday condemning the Biden administration’s approval of a new US arms sale to Taiwan. The deal is worth an estimated $108 million and includes armored vehicle parts and technical assistance.
Beijing “demands” that the United States “immediately withdraw the above-mentioned arms sales plan to Taiwan,” as well as halt all other arms deals and cut military ties with the island, said Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Tan Kefei. “Otherwise, the US side will be solely responsible for undermining the relationship between China and the US and the two militaries and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.”
“The Chinese People's Liberation Army will take all necessary measures to firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely thwart any form of external interference and separatist attempts for ‘Taiwan independence’,” the colonel added.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin echoed this sentiment, saying that Washington’s arms supplies “gravely undermine China’s sovereignty and security interests, and severely harm China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
“China will continue to take resolute and strong measures to firmly defend its sovereignty and security interests,” Wang added.
The Pentagon revealed on Friday that the US State Department had greenlit the transaction, which is valued at up to $108 million. It has yet to receive congressional approval, however. The military aid package will include parts for tanks and other combat vehicles, as well as technical and logistical support services provided by the US government and its contractors, in order to enhance the Taiwanese military’s interoperability with American forces and other allies, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

California thieves have graduated from 'smash and grabs' at luxury retail stores and looting rail cars stacked with consumer goods to now pulling off an 'Italian Job'-style robbery.
A Brink's armored truck was loaded with millions of dollars of jewelry on July 10, following an exhibition hosted by the International Gem and Jewelry Show in San Mateo, south of the Bay Area, the group's director Brandy Swanson told local CBS-TV affiliate KPIX.
Swanson said the Brink's truck was headed to another event on July 11 at the Pasadena Convention Center, northeast of downtown Los Angeles, when 25 and 30 bags of jewelry were stolen from the truck. She said, "18 victims reported more than $100 million in losses."
Laura Eimiller, the spokeswoman for the FBI in Los Angeles, said Brink's armored truck was robbed in the desert city of Lancaster in northern Los Angeles County while en route to its destination at the convention center.
Dana Callahan, a spokeswoman for Brink's, disputed the $100 million value of stolen property and said it's more like $10 million.
Swanson said the discrepancy between the dollar amount stolen is because some traveling vendors underinsure to save money:
"That's where the discrepancy comes in. These are mom-and-pop operators," she said. "They're devastated. Some of these people have lost their entire livelihoods."
Vendors claim the figure is more like $150 million. One jeweler said their "19 karat yellow gold with over 100 carats of multicolored sapphire" piece was among the stolen jewels.
