Marriage is a "religious" institution, and there should never be any state involvement in it at all. Period. If you can't wrap your head around this, then look at the current state of the right losing their shit about what gov't is doing to the institution, and realize it was the right that demanded gov't get involved with it from the get go. If you want to keep your institutions, or ensure they retain their true meanings, then don't have them over to the gov't to dictate how they should function.
