The next generation of speed cameras being rolled out in Western Australia don't only catch lead foots but also snap drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seat belts.

In a $1.5million three-month trial, the first mobile point-to-point road safety cameras in Australia will be deployed in and around Perth.

Six cameras, which work in pairs, will measure the average speeds of drivers over a distance, which means those who only slow down when they spot a camera are more likely to be caught.

The lenses - dubbed the Swiss Army Knives of Camera's - also have the ability to zoom inside a vehicle to detect if motorists are texting or not buckled up.

However, during the pilot the cameras will not be directly used to issue infringements as laws would need to be passed to allow this.

For now they will be tested for their suitability but police can use the data to determine where certain offences are happening.

West Australia's Road Safety Minister Paul Papalia said images showing particularly dangerous behaviour would be passed onto police to investigate.

'Speed, inattention and not wearing a seatbelt are all contributors to trauma on our roads, so I am pleased to trial Australian-first technology that can detect all three of these high-risk behaviours anywhere, anytime,' Mr Papalia told The West Australian newspaper.

He described the new technology as the 'Swiss Army Knife of road safety cameras which will act as a deterrent.

A nine-year-old girl in Sweden was raped and nearly killed by an Ethiopian migrant who had just obtained residency.

The 13-year-old migrant boy from Ethiopia may be much older than his declared age according to the prosecutor in the case.

This is not uncommon in Europe and likely in the US as well.

In October 2015 1,200 migrants with beards entered Stockholm, Sweden in a single day claiming to be “refugee children.”

And in 2021 French police have found that 78% of unaccompanied “children” are actually adults.

Senate group moves to rewrite Electoral Count Act

The effort follows the contentious 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot

A bloc of Republican and Democratic Senators on Wednesday proposed legislation to revise the Electoral Count Act, making it more difficult for legislators to challenge election results from their states.

Led by moderate Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., a group of 16 senators issued a joint statement.

“From the beginning, our bipartisan group has shared a vision of drafting legislation to fix the flaws of the archaic and ambiguous Electoral Count Act of 1887,” they said, per the New York Times.

“Through numerous meetings and debates among our colleagues as well as conversations with a wide variety of election experts and legal scholars, we have developed legislation that establishes clear guidelines for our system of certifying and counting electoral votes for president and vice president," they said.

The proposal would assert that the vice president possesses no discretion over the results and impose tight restrictions on challenging any state's electors, according to the NYT.

The effort follows the contentious 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot during which supporters of President Donald Trump sought to block Congressional certification of the election.

Trump's campaign challenged the results in many swing states, but focused particularly on claims of mass voter fraud in Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

Vice President Mike Pence, who as president of the Senate presided over Congressional certification, became the object of Trump's ire for refusing to stop the process. The Wednesday proposal would clarify that the vice president has no power to do so.

Collins and Manchin have not yet gained the necessary 10 Republican votes to overcome a filibuster, should all Senate Democrats back the legislation, but already have the support of eight other Republicans aside from Collins, the NYT reported.

'Jerry Nadler says the quiet part out loud': Top Democrat makes huge admission about an assault weapons ban

House Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) admitted Wednesday that the purpose of a renewed congressional effort to pass a federal assault weapons ban is to outlaw rifles that are in "common use." Though his admission may seem obvious, a committee Republican quickly pointed out that Nadler's statement shows how the bill flagrantly violates Supreme Court precedent on the Second Amendment.

The judiciary committee held a markup hearing on Wednesday for H.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2021. The legislation would ban AR-15 rifles and other so-called "assault weapons," as well as high-capacity magazines. It comes after a spate of high profile mass shootings in recent weeks, including at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York; an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas' and a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

Prompted by these shootings, Congress passed bipartisan legislation that incentivizes states to enact "red flag" laws to take guns away from dangerous people, strengthens background checks for gun buyers under the age of 21, and funds mental health resources. But President Joe Biden and other Democrats believe these measures did not go far enough and have pushed to renew the 1994 federal assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

“As we have learned all too well in recent years, assault weapons—especially when combined with high-capacity magazines—are the weapon of choice for mass shootings," Nadler said in his opening remarks Wednesday. "These military-style weapons are designed to kill the most people in the shortest amount of time."

Judiciary committee Republicans are staunchly opposed to the bill and sat in front of signs that read, "Shall Not Be Infringed" during the hearing. They say banning AR-15 rifles would violate the Second Amendment by making it illegal to own one of the most popular rifles in America. More than 4.5 million AR- and AK-style rifles were legally purchased by American civilians since 2020, according to an estimate from the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

At one point, Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) challenged Democrats on whether their proposal would ban firearms that are in "common use" in America.

"Would anyone on the other side dispute that this bill would ban weapons that are in common use to the United States today?" Bishop asked, offering to yield to any Democrat who would answer that question.

Nadler answered, "That's the point of the bill."

"To clarify, Mr. Chairman, you're saying it is the point of the bill to ban weapons that are in common use in the United States today?" Bishop followed up.

"Yes, the problem is they are in common use," Nadler said.
