Viral video of a robot dog shooting a gun is actually from Russia
The viral video (https://twitter.com/sonicmega/status/1549651495997476864?s=20&t=W1ucB1RnNdtduR2LixYZqA) of a robot dog firing an assault rifle was filmed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VygwTBgph4) back in March by a Russian hoverbike company (https://www.hoversurf.com/) founder Alexander Atamanov.
The tech itself is nothing more than a gun strapped to an existing Unitree dogbot (https://www.unitree.com/products/go1/) and is unlikely to be a real combat robot.
Nonetheless, Black Mirror-esque robodogs firing a fully automatic weapon already exist. Last April, the French army began testing (https://twitter.com/SaintCyrCoet/status/1379457690020294665?s=20&t=VCaiQepUyIehacOZBP6YXQ) Boston Dynamics' robot dog Spot in combat scenarios. Last September, it was revealed (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/18/world/middleeast/iran-nuclear-fakhrizadeh-assassination-israel.html) that Iran's top nuclear scientist was assassinated by a killer robot that was remote controlled by a sniper over 1,000 miles away. Finally, last October, US firm Ghost Robotics introduced (https://sworddefense.com/spur/) a weaponised special-ops robotic canine, calling it the "latest lethality sniper payload."
So, should we be concerned yet..?
