Russia tells Jewish agency to leave

Israel is sending a delegation to Moscow in a bid to reverse the Russian authorities’ move

Israel will send a delegation to Moscow “to ensure the continuation” of the Jewish Agency’s activity in Russia, the prime minister’s office announced on Thursday.

Moscow’s Basmanny District Court said earlier that it had received a request from the Justice Ministry to liquidate the Russian branch of the agency. The potential closure of the organization, which promotes the repatriation of Jews to Israel, prompted Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid to conduct “a situation assessment” with diplomats and members of the National Security Council.

“It was decided to send a joint delegation from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration to ensure the continuation of the Jewish Agency’s activity in Russia,” the office said in a statement.

An additional inter-agency meeting will take place on Sunday.

“The Jewish community in Russia is deeply connected with Israel. Its importance arises in every diplomatic discussion with the Russian leadership. We will continue to act through diplomatic channels so that the Jewish Agency’s important activity will not cease,” Lapid said.

The Moscow court said that the pretrial hearing was set for July 28. It didn’t reveal the details of the Justice Ministry’s arguments, saying merely that the request to terminate the Jewish Agency’s operations was related to its alleged violation of Russian law.

According to the newspaper Haaretz, a letter from the Justice Ministry to the agency’s office in Moscow sent on July 1stated that the organization was in breach of laws related to data storage and protection. However, the outlet stressed that the ministry did not at that time explicitly demand immediate cessation of the agency’s operations.

In early July, meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post, citing its own sources, said that the Russian authorities had ordered the Jewish Agency to stop all of its activities.

The organization later refuted this information, while the Russian Foreign Ministry called the article “a provocation,” a view that it shared with the Israeli authorities.

The Jewish Agency, founded in 1929, first assisted in repatriating Jews to Palestinian lands, and after Israel gained independence, to the state of Israel. Its offices and partners, according to its website, operate in the cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Rostov, Pyatigorsk, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk.

As Haaretz reports, citing internal figures of the Aliyah and Integration Ministry, the last few months coinciding with the Russian military offensive in Ukraine have seen asharp increase in immigration from Russia to Israel. In the first six months of the year, the number of Russians who relocated to Israel —totaled 16,598, which is more than double the number who emigrated to the country throughout all of last year. It is also nearly 40% above the number of Ukrainians who have moved to Israel over the first half of this year.

British spy chief reveals top priority

The UK intelligence puts “more effort into China” than any other field of their work, head of MI6 Richard Moore has said

British intelligence is now focusing its efforts on China, Richard Moore, the head of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), also known as MI6, said on Thursday. Understanding the way Beijing pursues its strategic goals is now one of the most complex challenges British intelligence is facing, he told the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, US.

“We are putting more effort into China. We now devote more effort to China than any other single subject,” Moore told the forum, adding that there is “a growing recognition” in London of the “threats” China supposedly poses. According to MI6, understanding China is now a more pressing task for the intelligence than fighting terrorism.

MI6 “never had any illusions whatsoever about Communist China,” he said, but admitted that, for British intelligence, the Chinese systems appear to still be “pretty opaque.” His agency has little problem understanding Chinese President Xi Jinping's “strategic intent,” but “if yougo beneath that strategy, in terms of how they implement, how they organize… that’s a black box,” the MI6 chief said.

The role of his organization is to help “British ministers and policymakers to understand that so they can navigate this really complex, difficult relationship with the Chinese.”

Moore also added that Beijing is supposedly closely following the developments in Ukraine and argued that the West should continue to support Kiev so that it could “negotiate from a position of significant strength.” Otherwise, Beijing could see it as Western “weakness” and possibly attack Taiwan, Moore claimed.

His words came amid the ongoing tension between Beijing and Washington over Taiwan. Beijing considers the island that has been self-governed since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 to be part of its own territory under the One China policy.

The US, which says it is committed to the One China policy, maintains strong unofficial ties with Taipei, selling weapons to the island and tacitly encouraging its push for sovereignty. China has repeatedly slammed this behavior as a provocation and interference into its internal affairs.

More recently, Beijing issued a warning to Washington in the wake of a report by the Financial Times about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s alleged plans to take a congressional delegation to Taiwan next month. If the visit does take place, it would have far-reaching consequences for bilateral relations between the two nations, China warned.

British pedophiles target Ukrainian refugee children

The sex offenders claimed they were providing “humanitarian assistance”

Anumber of known British pedophileshave been asked to leave Poland after British authorities discovered they traveled there to target Ukrainian children in refugee camps, the National Crime Agency said on Thursday.

The ten men were interviewed by Polish immigrationauthorities before being sent home, the National Crime Agency (NCA) told The Independent. According to an NCA spokesperson, the men were required by law to declare their convictions upon arriving in Poland, but “we find inevitably they haven’t.”

__The convicted predators reportedly claimed they were offering “humanitarian assistance___” to refugees fleeing the conflict in Ukraine, of which at least 5,000 in Poland are unaccompanied children, the spokesperson continued.

“For us, it’s about making partners aware that these convicted child sex offenders are on their turf, for obvious reasons,” the NCA official said. “Making sure [the children are] safe is absolutely paramount.”

It is unclear whether the pedophiles came in contact with any Ukrainian children before they were deported.

In addition to child refugees, women fleeing Ukraine have also been threatened by abusers. Ukrainian authorities arrested the leader of a criminal gang earlier this month, claiming that his group offered jobs abroad to women looking to leave the country, only to traffic them into prostitution in Turkey.

A surge in interest in Ukrainian prostitutes has created “a strong incentive for traffickers to recruit and exploit Ukrainian women at scale,” Valiant Richey, the OSCE Special Representative and Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking, told a conference in Ireland in May.

Human trafficking has long been a problem within Ukraine too. A US State Department report last year noted that while authorities had made “significant efforts” in clamping down on trafficking, the country downplayed the number of victims, and government officials were found to be complicit in some cases.

Children in state-run orphanages were singled out by the report as “especially vulnerable to human trafficking,” and carers in these facilities were described in some cases as “complicit or willfully negligent in the sex and labor trafficking of girls and boys under their care.”

Chess robot injures boy (VIDEO)

An aspiring Russian chess master ended up in a cast after a tournament machine mishap

Weird story

A 7-year-old boy had his finger broken by a chess-playing robot during a tournament in Moscow, local authorities said on Thursday. Organizers said the boy got his finger caught when he rushed to move a piece before it was time to do so. He was able to finish the tournament while wearing a cast, but his parents now reportedly want to press charges.

“The robot broke the boy’s finger, which is obviously a bad thing,” Sergey Lazarev, head of the Moscow Chess Federation, told reporters. He pointed out that the federation doesn’t actually own the robot, but has been renting it from its operators, who seem to have “overlooked” this possibility in the safety protocols.

“The boy made a move, but needed to give the robot time to respond. However, he rushed and the robot caught him,” Lazarev explained.

The incident took place during the Moscow Chess Open tournament, which ran from July 13-20. Video from inside the venue, obtained by the Baza Telegram channel, shows bystanders rushing to help free the child from the clutches of the robot arm.

According to Lazarev’s deputy Sergey Smagin, the aspiring chess master “apparently violated” the safety protocols and tried to make a move while it was the robot’s turn to play.

“This robot has been playing for a long time, about 15 years,” said Smagin. “This is an extremely rare case, the first in my memory.”

He described the boy’s injuries as “nothing serious,” adding that he was able to continue playing with a cast on his finger, attended the awards ceremony and even signed documents.

“The boy is fine,” Smagin said. He insisted that the robot is “absolutely safe” to be around, but that its “very talented inventor” may need to install additional safety protocols.

The child’s parents have since decided to contact the Moscow prosecutor’s office, Lazarev told TASS, adding that the chess federation will “sort it out and try to help in any way we can.”

Chinese chipmaker overcomes US sanctions – Bloomberg

(Under Bidan)

SMIC’s breakthrough puts the company’s semiconductors in the same league as Samsung and Taiwan’s TSMC

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), China’s top chip manufacturer, has quietly produced chips to the highest Western standards, despite US sanctions specifically aimed at hampering its development of such technology, according to a report confirmed by Bloomberg on Thursday.

The Shanghai-based firm has produced Bitcoin-mining semiconductors using 7-nanometer (nm) technology since last July, according to Tech Insights, an industry blog. Bloomberg confirmed the report, citing an anonymous source unable to discuss the news publicly.

A chip’s nanometer figure refers to the size of the transistors involved. With one nanometer equal to a billionth of a meter, the lower this number, the more transistors can be fit on a single chip, and the faster and more efficient the chip will be.

SMIC previously produced chips at 14nm, and the US has specifically tried to restrict any progress beyond this level. The Trump administration banned the export of equipment used to make semiconductors of 10nm and beyond to SMIC in 2020, and with US firms forbidden from supplying the Chinese company, the Biden administration is currently pressing Dutch machine supplier ASML to cease sales to SMIC.

ASML is already banned from selling its most advanced chipmaking tools to SMIC, and it is currently unclear whether the Dutch government will tighten this ban as Biden has requested.

These advanced tools have been used by Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung to make 7nm semiconductors, while US-based Intel is projected to release its own 7nm chip next year. Analysts have noted that the most advanced US and European chips on the market right now are machined to 12nm.

It is unclear exactly how SMIC bypassed US export controlsto hit the 7nm mark, although the previously-mentioned analysts have suggested that the company could have modified its 14nm tools.

As well as representing a leap ahead for China, which has previously lagged behind the US in semiconductor development, SMIC’s breakthrough presents an added geopolitical challenge for Washinton, where the foreign policy establishment is also trying to throttle Russia’s access to Western technology.

The US Department of Commerce in March threatened to withhold manufacturing software from SMIC, should the company continue exporting semiconductors to Russia and Belarus. The Chinese government, which partially owns SMIC, insisted at the time that it would not join the West’s sanctions campaign against Moscow and would “continue to maintain normal trade, economic, and financial ties” with Russia.

While China has stuck to its position, SMIC has explicitly stated that it has never had any Russian customers, and that it has “always been operating in compliance” with US sanctions.
