I'll give a corollary, coz I sound like the first anon except chose the opposite path. Self employed for 22 years, after 5 years in corporate, and realizing the same things he listed. Have a high skill set, good reputation, decent clients, but am probably not the best money manager. Have always wished for that regular dependable salary.

At times have earned $250K, and at other times have been barely surviving. I see being self-employed more as a lifestyle choice than a business decision, at least that is what it has been for me. It lets me be flexible in working hours and adaptable to changing conditions. I do believe it cost me my first marriage, during a very busy and stressful time. But every time I am on a project contract for a corporation, I smile inwardly at all the bullshit those guys are going through, the mismanagement and poor decisions, and thank God once again that I made the decision to be self employed.
