Flash flood kills at least 17 people in southern IranTEHRAN, Iran – Flash floods in Iran's drought-stricken southern Fars province have killed at least 17 people, state television said Saturday.

Heavy rains swelled the Roudbal river by the city of Estahban, according to the city's governor Yousef Karegar.

Karegar said rescue teams had saved 55 people who were trapped by the flash flooding, but at least six people were still missing.

Iran’s metrology department had warned about possibly heavy seasonal rainfall across the country that is facing a decades-long drought blamed on climate change. The dangers of flash flooding have also been exacerbated by the widespread construction of buildings and roads near riverbeds.

In March 2018, a flash flood in Fars province caused the death of 44 people.

Lake Elsinore man convicted of raping minors in 'sex dungeon' sentenced to 215 years in prisonA Lake Elsinore man was sentenced to 215 years in prison Thursday for rape and sexual assault of minors while operating what investigators said was a "sex dungeon" in his garage.

Morgan Delos Fowler, 32, pleaded guilty last month in Riverside County Superior Court to 18 felonies, including 10 counts of rape and other sexual assault charges, after a plea agreement with the Riverside County district attorney's office.

Before the plea agreement, Fowler had faced nearly 60 total chargesinvolving dozens of victims, spanning 2007 to 2019.

"The sentence of 215 years, four months to life ensures that this serial sexual predator can never again prey upon or victimize anyone," the district attorney's office said in a statement. "We hope that the conclusion of the case can bring some closure to the many victims."

Fowler was arrested in 2019 by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department after the agency received an anonymous tip regarding child sexual abuse material, the Press-Enterprise reported. He was not charged with creating or possessing such material.

In a statement petitioning for increased bail for Fowler after his arrest, a deputy wrote that he had "a sex dungeon in his garage with weapons throughout the house."

"Suspect knows where all three victims live and had been physical with them in the past causing them to fear for their safety," the deputy wrote.

FBI investigation determined Chinese-made Huawei equipment could disrupt US nuclear arsenal communicationsOn paper, it looked like a fantastic deal. In 2017, the Chinese government was offering to spend $100 million to build an ornate Chinese garden at the National Arboretum in Washington DC. Complete with temples, pavilions and a 70-foot white pagoda, the project thrilled local officials, who hoped it would attract thousands of tourists every year.

But when US counterintelligence officials began digging into the details, they found numerous red flags. The pagoda, they noted, would have been strategically placed on one of the highest points in Washington DC, just two miles from the US Capitol, a perfect spot for signals intelligence collection, multiple sources familiar with the episode told CNN.

Also alarming was that Chinese officials wanted to build the pagoda with materials shipped to the US in diplomatic pouches, which US Customs officials are barred from examining, the sources said.

Federal officials quietly killed the project before construction was underway.

The canceled garden is part of a frenzy of counterintelligence activity by the FBI and other federal agencies focused on what career US security officials say has been a dramatic escalation of Chinese espionage on US soil over the past decade.

Since at least 2017, federal officials have investigated Chinese land purchases near critical infrastructure, shut down a high-profile regional consulate believed by the US government to be a hotbed of Chinese spies and stonewalled what they saw as clear efforts to plant listening devices near sensitive military and government facilities.

R. Kelly's manager convicted of phoning threat that forced theater to cancel documentary screeningNEW YORK — R. Kelly’s manager was convicted Friday of making a phone threat that gunfire was about to occur at a crowded Manhattan theater preparing to show a documentary about the singer’s sexual abuse of women and girls.

The jury convicted Donnell Russell of threatening physical harm through interstate communication, but it exonerated him on a conspiracy count. Sentencing was set for Nov. 21.

Russell and his attorney declined comment as they left the courthouse.

The December 2018 documentary premiere had a live panel discussion that was to include several women featured in the documentary. The phone threat of someone with a gun prompted an emergency call to police, who ordered an evacuation that forced the premier to be cancelled.

In closing arguments, Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Pomerantz told jurors that evidence of Russell’s guilt was overwhelming.

She said phone records proved that a call to the small theater came from Russell’s Chicago home after he’d spent the day trying to stop Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” series from being shown. The effort included nine calls to the theater and a threat to sue, the prosecutor said.
