My perspective is that it is indeed a ritual. The meaning of this is to demonstrate your power to the world. You can have a soul trapped in your house and nothing happens to you.
From my humble point of view, I believe that politics is a way of life. You have to participate in every election you can. You cannot pretend to come to power without having been elected for anything, and without financing.
