Trump: US aid to Kiev won't change anything, Russia has more strength

Former President Donald Trump slammed Washington's generous hand-over of cash and weapons to Ukraine: The US, according to Trump, has too many problems of its own to hand money and weapons to Ukraine for its conflict with Russia, insisting that if anything it's Europe that should be providing more help to Kiev given that they're more affected by the situation.

Trump, speaking at the Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, recalled how, when he was president, he pushed NATO members part of the EU to increase their defense spending to 2% of their GDP. The US was “taken advantage of by Europe" back then, and now the same thing is happening over Ukraine, he asserted.

“We’ve so far given more than $60 billion to Ukraine. Well, the European countries, who are obviously far more affected than us, have given a tiny fraction of that number,” he noted.

If he were still in office, he “could’ve gone over there [to Europe] and said: ‘Listen, you’re going to put up the same money or more money than us.’ And they would’ve done it gladly,” Trump claimed.

“But we just give money out. And we have $35 trillion in debt. We have all of these problems,” he said, referring to the record-breaking inflation rates in the US.

Trump even doubted whether the massive levels of US aid to Ukraine would change the situation: “Now, it’s much tougher to solve,” he said about the crisis. “Russia has 35 times the fire power. And they’re looking to obliterate the weapons as we send them in. A lot of bad things are happening."

Trump further said that the US, during his term, had "no problem" with Russia, China or North Korea, and “nobody even talked about” Ukraine.

But, with 2 years under Joe Biden, the US “has gone from the strongest that it has ever been… to perhaps the weakest, especially when you include recognition and respect from all around the world. We’re not respected any longer by anybody."

“Two years ago we were energy independent… Now we are a beggar nation, with Biden down on his knees pleading for energy from all over the globe; going to Venezuela, Saudi Arabia. Going to countries all over the world, asking for help,” he added.

Military escalation in Syria's Hasakah, Aleppo countrysides

The town of Ain Issa in the Al-Raqqa countryside in Syria is seeing an increase in Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) armed groups patrols amid high tensions in Al-Hasakah as the Turkish occupation is constantly bombing the northern Syrian region.

The Opposition's Syrian Observatory said Sunday, "The Syrian Democratic Forces completely encircled the Russian forces inside Ain Issa district in the northern Al-Rakka countryside following a dispute between the two, the causes of which are yet to be known."

"The Russian forces demanded that SDF evacuate the M4 international highway section in the city of Ain Issa and hand it over to the Syrian army in full," sources told Al Mayadeen. "The SDF leadership rejected the Russian request, leading to tensions in the area."

Russian warplanes bombed sites for the Syrian National Army, a Turkish-backed militia, on Saturday night in the southeast of Ras al-Ayn without any information on the losses.

The Turkish military and the armed factions it backs shelled SDF-controlled areas, inflicting heavy damage on the civilian homes in the region.

The shelling killed a Syrian soldier and injured 10 others. The aggression spread to nearby cities and reached Afrin, with 30 shells landing in the region.

The latest international meeting aimed at mitigating the tensions in the region, the Astana Summit, saw the presidents of Russia, Iran, and Turkey agreeing to an undeclared truce in northern Syria, with Ankara pledging to delay launching a new military operation in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the Iranian capital to participate in the talks in Tehran to discuss ways of a Syrian settlement, in addition to several common agendas.

Reports indicate that the truce was based on Moscow pledging to persuade the SDF to leave the M4 international highway and hand it over to the Syrian army in exchange for Turkey evacuating Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham and other factions in backs to the northern section of the highway in preparation for opening it.

These developments come after Turkey, under the pretext of fighting terrorists in Syria, said it would launch an offensive in the country's north. "The Turkish army intends to carry out anti-terror military operations at the Turkish state borders," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in late May. "The decision on these operations will be taken soon," he added.

He said the Turkish army intended to carry out military operations to combat terrorism at the Turkish state borders, explaining that Ankara "will start taking new steps to complete the safe zone 30 km north of Syria."

Algerian FM to head to Damascus on Sunday: Source

Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra will visit Damascus on Sunday, marking the first such official visit in six years, a Syrian source told Sputnik.

"The Algerian foreign minister will arrive in Damascus on Sunday from Iraq at the head of a high-ranking delegation and meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad," the source said.

Lamamra will travel to Syria for the first time since becoming Algeria's foreign minister.

He will meet with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus to discuss the possibility of Syria participating in the League of Arab States (LAS) summit in Algeria, as per the source.

Lamamra announced in November 2021 that it was time to reinstate Syria's LAS membership, which had been suspended in 2011 after the beginning of the war on the country.

Following that, several member states recalled their ambassadors from Syria. Years later, some of them have begun to re-engage Damascus and reopen embassies.

Mekdad stated in January that restoring Syria's membership in the LAS was not a priority for Damascus, but that the Syrian leadership was working to establish and strengthen relations with Arab countries.

Algeria was among the first countries to call for Syria’s return to the Arab League in the next Arab summit, scheduled for March in Algeria, in which it is expected to discuss restoring Syria's membership.

Zaporozhye administration: We want Russian military bases permanently

Member of the main council of the military-civil administration for Zaporozhye Vladimir Rogov said that the permanent deployment of Russian troops in the region would ensure its security against attempts of external aggression.

"We want our region to have [Russian] military bases on a permanent basis," Rogov said.

He told Sputnik that a detailed discussion on the issue could be held after a referendum on joining Russia is held in Zaporozhye.

"The permanent deployment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the Zaporozhye region would guarantee the region's security from attempts of external aggression and terror by Ukrainian nationalists," Rogov said.

Earlier this month, Rogov told Sputnik that Ukrainian troops, in an attempt to conduct an offensive in the Zaporozhye region, were unsuccessful, as they were met with a tough rebuff, and were forced to flee.

Kherson and most of Zaporozhye are under control by Russian forces, particularly after Donetsk and Lugansk's respective governments requested help from Russia as they were under intensive offensives by Ukrainian troops.

Ukraine attacks Europe's largest nuclear power plant with drones

On Wednesday, three Kamikaze drones belonging to the Ukrainian Armed Forces targeted the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, Russian media reported, citing local officials.

Located in southeastern Ukraine but under the control of Russian forces, the Zaporozhye NPP has not been damaged and its reactor was not affected as a result of the Ukrainian attack, indicated the officials.

Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Zaporozhye Region military-civil administration, told TASS that the NPP's radiation background is normal and is constantly being monitored.

This is not the first time that Zaporozhye NPP has been targeted by the Ukrainian forces. In fact, on July 12, Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) dropped several 120mm shells on a building near the NPP, the press service of the Energodar city administration told RIA Novosti.

The administration's spokesperson highlighted that 11 employees were injured as a result of the attack, and four of them were in serious condition.
