Witnesses and local officials report multiple victims after a mass shooting that began at 3:51 pm Sunday at San Pedro’s Peck Park, in Los Angeles.

Police and emergency crews rushed to the scene where initial reports indicate several people are believed to have been hit, according to BNO News. Police believe there may have been multiple shooters involved and have revealed that the shooting may be gang-related, BNO News reported. “The whole park is a crime scene,” a dispatcher said, according to the outlet. LAPD has declared a citywide tactical alert while the suspects remain at large, CBS reported.

Multiple victims have reportedly been seriously injured and unconfirmed reports of fatalities have begun to surface. There are possibly more injured victims that have not yet been accounted for, BNO News continued.

“The circumstances, total number of patients and precise nature of their injuries has yet to be confirmed,” said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey, according to BNO News.

Humphrey also reported that gunfire was heard at or near a car show that was taking place at the park. Several witnesses have reported hearing dozens of gunshots, according to BNO News.

Sydney teacher Helga Lam accused of sexually abusing three teens

A female teacher will face a criminal trial after being charged with sexually abusing three teenage boys at a Sydney high school.

A Sydney teacher will face a trial over allegations she sexually abused three schoolboys more than 40 years ago.

Helga Lam, 67, was arrested in September last year following a four-month investigation by police into the alleged sexual assault of three boys atMaroubra Bay High School between 1977 and 1980.

Police established Strike Force Sportsground to conduct the “extensive” investigation.

Detectives allege three boys - aged 13, 14 and 15 - were assaulted by Ms Lam while they attended the school.

Ms Lam was arrested at her St Ives home and was taken to Hornsby Police Station where she was charged with 14 counts of indecent assault.

Following further investigation Ms Lam, who was employed as a teacher in Sydney at the time of her arrest, was hit with three further charges.

The 67-year-old last week entered pleas of not guilty to all 17 charges of indecent assault on a male.

She has now been committed to stand trial in the NSW District Court.

Ms Lam was granted strict conditional bail and will reappear in court for arraignment in August.

Maroubra Bay High School closed in 1990, ten years after Ms Lam’s alleged offences ceased, and was used to film five seasons of soap opera Heartbreak High.

The site was later developed for residential units.

Pope Francis set to apologise for abuse of Canadian Indigenous people in Christian schools

Pope Francis is expected to apologise to Canada's Indigenous people this week for missionaries' abuse at state-funded Christian schools.

Grand Chief George Arcand Junior of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations said they wanted justice for the abusers, financial reparations and the return of Indigenous artefacts held by the Vatican.

"Right now, many of our people are sceptical and they are hurt," he said

He said he hoped that with the papal apology "we could begin our journey of healing … and change the way things have been for our people for many, many years".

Wife shoots husband at luxury DC hotel, claims he molested children at daycare

A Maryland woman shot her husband, then went on a standoff against police at a luxury hotel in Washington, D.C. The wife allegedly told police that her husband molested children at her daycare business.

Around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, police received calls that a man was shot on the 8th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Washington, D.C. Hotel management informed law enforcement that a fire alarm went off. When hotel staff investigated the room, they allegedly saw blood on the wall.

When police officers arrived at the hotel room, a woman talked to cops through the door. The woman – who barricaded herself in a hotel room for nearly an hour – warned police that if they attempted to infiltrate the room that she would shoot herself, according to authorities.

Shanteari Weems, of Randallstown, told police that she shot her husband because she claimed that he molested children at a daycare that she owned and operated, according to charging documents.

Around 8:11 p.m., officers forcibly entered the room. The man – a former Baltimore Police officer who retired from the department in 2005 and was a contract specialist until 2008 – was shot in the leg, according to court documents.

Weems, 50, was apprehended by police.

Weems claimed that numerous children at her Lil Kidz Kastle daycare in Owings Mills informed her that her husband of five years had been molesting them. Weems told police she didn't want to kill her husband, and only wanted to hurt him, according to court documents.

Sgt. Gladys Brown – a spokesperson for Baltimore County Police – said that the Lil Kidz Kastle daycare is closed "while an investigation moves forward."

“Baltimore County detectives are currently monitoring the recent developments in Washington D.C.,” Brown said in a statement. “Due to the sensitive circumstances leading up to this incident, the Baltimore County Police Department continues to support the families impacted.”

Police found two guns in the hotel room.

Weems was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill and assault with a dangerous weapon. Weems was held without bond.

Weems is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Israel warns Moscow about ‘consequences’ amid Jewish Agency row

Banning a key agency in Russia would have a “grave” impact on ties between the two countries, Israeli PM warned

The anticipated closure of The Jewish Agency in Russia will have a serious impact on Russia-Israel relations, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid warned on Sunday. The quasi-governmental organization, which promotes the repatriation of Jews to Israel, has been targeted by Russia’s Justice ministry over alleged violations of local law.

“Prime Minister Lapid said in the meeting that ties with Russia are important to Israel. The Jewish community in Russia is large and important and comes up in every diplomatic discussion with the administration in Moscow,” the PM’s office said in a statement.

Closing the Jewish Agency’s offices would be a grave event, which will have consequences on those ties.

Earlier this week, a Moscow court said it had received a formal request from the Justice Ministry to liquidate the Russian branch of the agency.

While the exact nature of the allegations the agency faces has not been made public, Israeli media reported the organization had earlier this month received a warning from the ministry over a breach of laws related to data storage and protection. The pretrial hearing on the case, which may result in a ban on the agency, is scheduled for Thursday.

Responding to the situation around the organization, Israel expressed readiness to immediately dispatch a diplomatic delegation to Russia to “to ensure the continuation” of the group’s activities in the country. The readiness for talks was reiterated on Sunday, with the PM’s office confirming the delegation would be ready to set out for Moscow as soon as “it receives Russian approval for the talks.”

The Jewish Agency, founded in late 1920, first assisted in repatriating Jews to Palestinian lands, and to the state of Israel later on. In Russia, the organization maintains a large network, with its officers and partners operating in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major cities across the country.
