Nikolaev governor to restrict freedoms, impose lockdown on city

The governor of Ukraine on Saturday pledged to close off the entire city under the pretext of "flush[ing] out" what he described as "saboteurs" and "Russian spies" in the frontier city.

Governor Vitaliy Kim told The Telegraph that he was going to close off the city for several days for an investigation into people he accuses of working with Russia, meaning he will be restricting the freedom of the city's residents under false pretexts as the southern city undergoes fierce battles.

"We have a secret plan," he said. "We will train our military forces and police to search for saboteurs."

The head of the Nikolaev regional military administration, when asked about how many "saboteurs" he was after, said he suspected "everybody. But we have only a few of them in our city. Even one of them can give many points to the Russians, so we are searching for the bad ones."

He also confirmed reports about a mass arrest campaign that saw a dozen people the local authorities accused of "collaborating with Russia."

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) had arrested its former chief of Crimean affairs on suspicion of treason, which was accompanied by a presidential decision to dismiss the country's spy chief, Ivan Bakanov, and prosecutor general Irina Venediktova as paranoia mounts in Kiev.

The sackings not only reflect the rampant paranoia in Ukraine but also Kiev's growing frustration with its own 30,000 agent-strong security service.

The Ukrainian military and the mercenaries affiliated with the Kiev authorities suffering major defeats at the hands of the Russian soldiers on the southern front is what raised concerns about agents and citizens "collaborating" with Moscow despite the latter's military superiority.

Kim has made various controversial statements that reflected the criminality of his decisions, previously pledging to "hunt down and execute" everyone found to be in support of Russia, calling them "traitors".

He admitted that the authorities would use illegal means to find these so-called "traitors", such as hacking them and obtaining whatever data deemed valuable.

"You need to understand that we are far ahead in terms of information technology, hacking; we have very good specialists, and there are large databases. Everyone can be tracked. No one can escape justice," he told Ukraine 24 in late April, declaring that he was "not afraid of his word."

In March, Nikolaev Mayor Aleksander Senkevich declared his stance on the issue of the authorities deploying artillery weapons among residential buildings, which jeopardizes civilian lives, mocking those calling for their removal.

"I love when some of these girls write 'remove the artillery from the city'. Maybe we should remove the soldiers, too. Then? And hello, Russians, come on in," Senkevich said.

A senior Russian defense official in late May accused Ukrainian troops who were in control of parts of eastern Donetsk at the time of pulling heavy artillery and military hardware to schools and nurseries.

"Ukrainian armed forces have holed up in Bakhmut’s School No 2, Chasiv Yar’s Vocational School No 22, and in Novoekonomichne’s Solnyshko kindergarten and School No 1. They are storing military equipment and rocket launchers on the grounds," Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev said.

The Ukrainian forces are known to commit such violations throughout the war, putting civilian lives at risk, then blaming Russia for any losses that result from the neutralization of artillery systems.

https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/google-executive-hired-as-us-deputy-national-cyber-director

Google executive hired as US Deputy National Cyber Director

The fledgling Office of the National Cyber Director of the White House has hired Google executive Camille Stewart Gloster as its deputy national cyber director for technology and ecosystem security, Axios reported on Monday.

Stewart Gloster's work will mainly focus on workforce programs and supply chain security issues, the news outlet said, citing an administration official familiar with the matter.

The office in question was only established last year under the Biden administration as President Joe Biden's principal advisor on cybersecurity policy, strategy, and engagement with industry and international stakeholders.

The Google executive will start her job on August 1 after serving most recently as Google's global head of product security strategy.

Stewart Gloster has White House experience, previously serving as a senior policy adviser at the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama administration.

Google has a long history of controversies surrounding its collection of users' data and storing it without consent.

The Tagansky district court in Moscow fined Google $264,000 in mid-June for repeatedly refusing to localize Russian citizens' personal data.

Google LLC continues to store Russians' personal data in databases in the United States and the European Union, according to the protocol developed by Roskomnadzor under Part 9 of Art. 13.11 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offenses.

Previously, Google was fined $52 million in July 2021 for refusing to localize Russian citizens' personal data.

Additionally, a recent report alleged that Google Chrome extensions collect data about the user's system such as installed applications, hardware configuration, and performance stats.

Google Chrome extensions not only collect a lot of data about users and their browsing habits but also track online activity and most likely display personalized ads based on the data.

The White House hiring a Google executive amid the controversies the giant tech firm is mired in will likely prompt an uproar from the public, especially since the hire will be in charge of national issues concerning cyberspace.

The US government itself is not free of controversies when it comes to the data of civilians, as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) unveiled in previously unreleased records that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been acquiring location data of its targets from third parties to avert requiring a warrant to pursue a certain person of interest.

The documents show that DHS is not alone in purchasing its way around the US constitution, as agencies such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were able to purchase tons of location data without any oversight before using it to track the movements of millions of cellphones within the United States.

Though technically not a violation of the constitution, the practice is incredibly shady.

Obtaining data about communication within the United States from telecommunication providers requires the agency seeking to acquire the data to obtain a warrant, which must be approved by a judge. However, there is no law against buying data from brokers and shady third-party companies that are not subjected to any constraints.

Moscow Exchange will stop trading in Yen on Aug 8, cites risks

The Moscow Exchange (MOEX) will suspend the Japanese Yen trading on August 8 due to risks and difficulties in making calculations.

"On August 8, 2022, the Japanese yen trading will be suspended on the Moscow Exchange currency market … From August 8, the Japanese Yen will also not be accepted as collateral for transactions on the markets of the Moscow Exchange. The suspension of operations is due to potential risks and difficulties in making calculations in the Japanese yen," the Moscow Exchange said in a statement.

Japan's currency has been depreciating against the US dollar, reaching a 24-year-low as of last month. At home, the country has also been dealing with soaring price hikes with the unstable economic situation.

Last month, the Japanese yen sold at the lowest price against the US dollar for the first time since 1998, as the United States is battling soaring consumer prices, one of whose repercussions has been a widening monetary policy gap between Japan and the US.

The yen has been in freefall for months, especially in light of the Fed aggressively hiking interest rates to try and mitigate the soaring inflation. The current financial situation is expected to maintain its momentum through the coming period as the US grapples with several issues, including the sanctions on Russia that have been causing supply cuts, surging gas prices, and rising food prices.

The Bank of Japan said it would adhere to its long-standing monetary easing program, which it hopes would lead to stable growth, a step that goes against what the Fed is doing at home.

The contradicting policies have given the USD a lot more ground against the Japanese currency, with the former buying 135.19 yen. This beats the former record of 126 yen on the dollar, which was the Japanese currency's lowest since 2002.

This high rate has not been seen since the 1998 Asian currency crisis, and it marks a dramatic drop from the record-high January rates of around 115 yen per USD.

'Israel' to clash with Russia over Jewish Agency: Israeli media

Tensions are on the rise between "Tel Aviv" and Moscow over Russia's closure of the "Jewish Agency for Israel's" work in the country, Israeli media reported on Monday.

"It is too early to speak of an explosion in the relations between Israel and Russia," Israeli media said. "The common understanding in Israel is that they are on the path to collide with Moscow."

"Israel and Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who loves being against Russian President Vladimir Putin and believes this is good for him in the eyes of the West and the United States, turned the issue into a public policy issue," Israeli Channel 13 political affairs correspondent Moriah Wahlberg said.

"During a secret meeting, Lapid also asked for a bundle of political tools against Russia," Wahlberg revealed. "It is likely that Putin is not only angry with Lapid's statements, but rather the Israeli aid to Ukraine and the Israeli airstrikes in Syria."

Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported that "the issue of the Jewish Agency is a kind of a yellow card, not only because of the war in Ukraine but also because of the Israeli operations in Syria."

Russia could obstruct 'Israel' in Syria

The Israeli occupation is preparing for the possibility of Russia obstructing "Israel's freedom of action in Syria in light of the dissolution of the Jewish Agency," Israeli Channel 12 correspondent Yaron Ephraim said.

A senior Israeli official commented on Russia's decision to shut down its offices in the country by berating the decision and calling for the summoning of "Tel Aviv's" ambassador to Moscow, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

"If the agency's offices have been truly closed, the Israeli ambassador must be summoned from Moscow for consultations," the official said, as reported by Israeli media.

Earlier this week, a Moscow court said that the justice ministry had requested the "dissolution" of the Jewish Agency for legal violations that were not specified, setting a hearing on July 28.

Just hours earlier, the Israeli occupation's Ambassador to Moscow met with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and asked for updates on the Russian Justice Ministry's probe into the Jewish Agency (Sokhnut), Israeli newspaper Walla! reported on Wednesday.

The top Russian diplomat clarified that the investigation was not a political move against the occupation. However, Israeli officials fear that it might be a sign of Moscow's dissatisfaction with "Tel Aviv's" foreign policy toward Ukraine, Israeli media said.

Promoting and facilitating "aliyah" from Jewish communities across the world is one of the primary objectives of the Jewish Agency. If it cannot operate there, it will be the first time in the last 30 years that "aliyah" attempts have been prohibited in Russia.

The Israeli Integration Minister said briefly that "aliyah" was a "Jewish right" and that it must be preserved. The minister said that they are worried about the consequences of the Russian decision and that they hope to work a solution out with Moscow.

Relations between "Israel" and Russia have witnessed tension in recent months, as the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador to Russia, Alexander Ben Zvi, over a statement by Yair Lapid when he was foreign minister in April, when he condemned Russia's practices in Ukraine, describing them as "war crimes".

https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/iraqi-army-general:-turkish-mobilization-taking-place-at-the

Iraqi army general: Turkish mobilization taking place at the borders

Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army Abdel Emir Yarallah announced that Turkish mobilization is taking place on the country's borders.

During his speech in a special session held by the House of Representatives which was held last Saturday, Yarallah said that there was a memo brought to him demanding not to mention the number of Turkish forces present in Iraq. The session came in light of the recent bombing of Duhok, in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

He said, "I will speak frankly in front of the people's representatives. There are five main bases in northern Iraq for the Turkish forces," explaining that the "bases include more than 4,000 Turkish fighters."

He pointed out that the number of military positions for the Turkish army in 2021 was 40; at the beginning of 2022 they were 90, and today there are 100 military positions inside Iraqi territory, not far distant from Zakho, Amadiya, and Duhok.

Yarallah renewed calls to "send forces from the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga to these areas to take back lands so that there is not a chance that the Turks advance or deploy artillery, thus inflicting losses on the citizens."

He continued to reveal: "There are more or less than 376 kilometers separating us from Turkey within the borders of the Kurdistan region, which means that we, as the Ministry of Defense, do not have the authority, and none of our soldiers are present in this area," adding, "Even if we want to go, we must take official authorization."

According to the Iraqi military official, the federal forces are not present in the Kurdistan region - except for border patrol guards, and they are warning forces, rather than combat forces, and thus cannot protect themselves.

He said, "There is always a situation in wars when the combat forces take the place of the border guards, particularly when the enemy forces attack the country."

The statements of the Iraqi military official come in the wake of the Turkish bombing of a tourist resort in the northern Iraqi province of Duhok, which killed six tourists.

On Sunday, the Iraqi government sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council saying that Baghdad documented more than 22,740 violations committed by the Turkish armed forces.

"Turkey has expansionist goals behind the aggressions it is committing, and there will be no security nor military accord with Ankara," the Iraqi foreign ministry said. "Baghdad's letter included a demand for an apology from the Turkish side to Iraq and its people."

"Baghdad expects the United Nations Security Council to issue a statement denouncing the Turkish violation of Iraq's sovereignty," the foreign ministry's statement said.

On Saturday, the Iraqi parliament discussed in an emergency session the Turkish attacks on northern Iraq.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Asa'ib Ahl Al-Haq movement in Iraq, Sheikh Qais Khazali, called on parliament to issue a resolution obligating the government to remove Turkish forces from Iraq, considering that the ongoing Turkish attacks call for a unified and firm stance.

Spies attempted to force me to take anti-Russia stance: Serbian MP

A major foreign intelligence service has been pressing Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin on his stance toward Russia and China. Within this context, the minister is anticipating that a large media campaign against him will begin next week.

“One of the largest intelligence services in the world, if not the largest, told me that my stance was unacceptable and that if I do not change [it] and do not abandon the policy that I am pursuing … then I will not be a member of the government and they will do absolutely everything to smear me,” Vulin said as quoted by media outlet Pink.

Despite the high pressure, the minister affirmed that he is not willing to cooperate with foreign spies in any way.

"I have not worked and will not work for anyone other than the Serbian people and the Serbian state, and I will not be completely loyal to anyone other than the president of all Serbs, Aleksandar Vucic," the minister added.

The minister also called on Serbia's president to remain neutral and maintain good relations with Russia and China despite external pressure.

It is worth noting that top Serbian officials have constantly stated that the country is under increasing foreign pressure as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Belgrade, on the other hand, has refused to join any anti-Russian sanctions or other hostile acts by the West as a whole, confirming that Serbia will continue to pursue its own interests while maintaining long-standing ties with Moscow.

Vulin has taken a particularly strong stance in the midst of the ongoing crisis. Early in July, the minister stated that the United States and the European Union were openly pressuring Serbia to become a "NATO foot soldier" in order to become "someone who wants to engage in a conflict with Russia."

At the time, he added: “We are very clear: We will not engage in a conflict with Russia, we will not engage in other people’s wars, we will not be someone else’s foot soldiers.”

US helicopters hold live-fire drills in South Korea

The US Army Apache attack helicopters stationed in South Korea are conducting live-fire drills with guns and rockets, according to the US military.

The training, which will last until July 29, is taking place at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex, close to the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, according to the US 2nd Infantry Division.

The drills ensure that US aircrews "are qualified on their Apaches, maintain their proficiency on their helicopters, and are capable of executing their mission if called upon," as per a spokesperson.

According to local reports, the US military allegedly stopped using the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in Pocheon in 2018 due to noise and safety concerns raised by local residents.

However, the two countries, long-time regional security allies, announced in May that they were looking to increase joint military exercises, which had been reduced due to Covid-19 and a period of failed diplomacy with the North.

This comes as South Korea's hawkish new President Yoon Suk-yeol, who took office in May, has promised a tougher stance against Pyongyang, vowing to "normalize" joint military drills between the US and South Korea.

According to images tweeted by the US 2nd Infantry Division, the US is using advanced AH-64E v6 Apache helicopters in the drills.

"5th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment and 4-2 Attack Battalion are conducting aerial gunnery, certifying their crews on AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, Hydra 70 rockets and 30mm canon," it said.

Six top-of-the-line F-35A fighters from the United States also arrived in the South earlier this month for a 10-day allied exercise that lasted until July 14.

It was the country's first public deployment of American stealth fighters since late 2017.

Last month, South Korea and the United States launched eight surface-to-surface missiles off South Korea's east coast early Monday, according to a South Korean defense ministry official.

Pyongyang routinely condemns joint military exercises between US and South Korean forces as rehearsals for an invasion.

UK's Johnson could serve in Truss's cabinet

Outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is not ruled out as a minister in Lizz Truss's cabinet if she wins the leadership race, according to UK Secretary of State for Education James Cleverly, a close ally of Truss's, The Telegraph reported.

Truss served as Foreign Secretary in Boris Johnson's cabinet, and the two were close allies throughout Johnson's tenure.

Cleverly believes that Johnson could remain in UK politics at a senior level and would be "comfortable" with serving in Truss's cabinet if she approves him, the newspaper added.

A senior source in Truss's campaign refused to comment on whether Johnson could serve in her government, saying she was "not making any plans at the moment" about her cabinet appointments, The Telegraph revealed.

Conservative rivals Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss will compete in the coming weeks for the premiership after the Tory party's lawmakers held the last vote Wednesday.

The crucial race for second place was narrowly won by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 113 votes, against 105 for former Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt.

Sunak and Truss now take their case to Conservative party members, who will decide the new leader and prime minister after a series of nationwide hustings in August. The result will be announced on September 5.

Sunak's resignation as Finance Minister this month helped to topple outgoing leader Boris Johnson after months of scandal including "Partygate".

Johnson announced that he would step down after a slew of resignations hit his government earlier this month in protest of his leadership. He will, however, stay as Prime Minister until a replacement is found.

At his last session of Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons earlier Wednesday, Johnson bowed out by saying "Hasta la vista, baby!"

In a hint of support for Truss's low-tax platform, Johnson urged his successor to "cut taxes and deregulate where you can to make this the greatest place to live and invest."

Truss tweeted that she was "ready to hit the ground running from day one."

But whoever wins the Tory race, "like some household detergent, would wipe the floor" with the main opposition Labour party, Johnson predicted.

US cancels ‘essential’ Black Sea drills over war in Ukraine - Reports

US officials, who chose to remain anonymous, told Newsweek that the US Navy canceled the "essential" Sea Breeze 2022 exercise in the Black Sea following Russia’s ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.

The report said that last year, the exercise was dubbed "essential" to preventing Russia’s alleged aggression.

Last year, in 2021, Sea Breeze involved 32 warships from NATO and partners, the report said.

Instead of the canceled maneuvers, NATO is conducting a smaller exercise, Breeze 2022, off the coast of Bulgaria, the report read. This would be the first NATO-led exercise since the start of Russia's special military operation.

Furthermore, Breeze 2022 features a total of 24 warships, five aircraft, and two helicopters from ten nations. No US ships are participating in the drill.

Earlier, Turkey had issued a warning to nations in the Black Sea and beyond the Black Sea not to send warships via the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits shortly after Russia began its operation, citing the Montreux Convention of 1936, which gives the country the authority to limit the movement of military ships through the straits under emergency circumstances.
