Dixie served 18 years in the Utah State Legislature (from 1963 to 1976 and from 1989 to 1992)[6] As a legislator, he worked to obtain four-year status for the College of Southern Utah (CSU), which was among his first legislative successes. Another notable legislative achievement was his bill that became the Utah Higher Education Act of 1969. One of the crowning accomplishments of his service in the Utah State Senate was the advancement to university status of Southern Utah University.

Religious and community service

Peptide from SARS-CoV-2 spike protein forms amyloids

The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has been the focus of a lot of research these past two years. Itโ€™s what the virus uses to invade host cells and it has been the target of COVID vaccines. Researchers have also speculated that regions of the protein can clump up to form amyloid fibrils like those seen in diseases like Alzheimerโ€™s. Some scientists have wondered if spike protein fibrils could contribute to the severity of COVID and long COVID. Sofie Nystrรถm and Per Hammarstrรถm of Linkรถping University now show that peptides from the spike protein do indeed form these fibrils (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, DOI: 10.1021/jacs.2c03925).

 

โ€œWe see amyloid everywhere, because thatโ€™s our bread and butter,โ€ Hammarstrรถm says. โ€œBut it seemed that this could actually be a mechanism of interest for this virus and particularly for this protein.โ€

 

Nystrรถm and Hammarstrรถm started to look for spike protein amyloids by buying a library that consisted of the protein broken into 316 peptides that were 15 amino acids long. They oberved amyloid fibrils forming, so they set out to determine which peptides were forming them.

 

The pair used an algorithm developed by Frederic Rousseau and Joost Schymkowitz at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven to predict which peptides were most likely to form amyloids. The algorithm identified seven candidates. Of these, the one called Spike192, named for the position of its first amino acid in the spike protein sequence, was especially good at forming amyloids in lab experiments.

 

Nystrรถm and Hammarstrรถm thought that enzymes from human cells might digest the spike protein into these fibril-forming peptides. In lab studies, they found that neutrophil elastase, which some immune cells release when responding to inflammation during infections, chops up the spike protein into a peptide nearly identical to Spike192.

 

โ€œWhat I like about the paper is not only that they synthesize the fragments and study their aggregation, but that they also give a mechanism for the generation of the fragments,โ€ says Ulrich H. E. Hansmann, who studies amyloid proteins at the University of Oklahoma. The new findings help bolster previous work by other researchers, he says.

 

Etheresia Pretorius of Stellenbosch University, Douglas B. Kell of the University of Liverpool, and their colleagues have previously shown that the spike protein can induce the formation of blood clots. They find it interesting that Nystrรถm and Hammarstrรถm could use the spike peptides to induce amyloids in fibrinogen, the protein that forms blood clots to control bleeding. These clots are supposed to degrade, but that doesnโ€™t happen in COVID.

 

Nystrรถm and Hammarstrรถm plan to further study the relationship between the spike amyloid and blood clot formation in severe COVID and long COVID. โ€œA review of autopsy studies of patients that died from COVID states that 91% of them had blood clots in their system,โ€ Nystrรถm says. โ€œItโ€™s really a major part of severe COVID.โ€

The reaction wasnโ€™t surprising either. While plenty of Twitter accounts supported Nicklausโ€™ fawning treatise on Trump, many others did not. There was outrage. There was anger. On June 5, 1968, a few minutes after midnight, Robert Kennedy was shot and killed at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles while walking through a narrow serving area called โ€œthe pantry.โ€ Kennedy had just won the California primary and was on his way to a room where print media reporters were waiting to hear him speak.

 

In early March, Lyndon B. Johnson had thrown open the race by announcing that he would not seek re-election because of the failure of his Vietnam policy. Kennedy emerged as a leading contender by energizing the youth wing of the party with his calls for sweeping social change.

 

Kennedy was in many ways a strange liberal icon because he grew up idolizing Herbert Hoover, was closest in his family to his father, Joseph, the millionaire business tycoon, began his career supporting Joseph McCarthyโ€™s anti-communist witch-hunt, called for victory against communism in Vietnam in the early 1960s.

 

Nevertheless, by the latter part of the 1960s, Kennedy had evolved into a crusader for the poor and dove on Vietnam who was trying to ride the wave of the protest movement into the White House.[1]

 

Biographers Lester and Irene David wrote that Bobby was the Kennedy who โ€œfelt deepest, cared the most, and fought the hardest for humanityโ€”crying out against Americaโ€™s involvement in the Vietnam War, championing the causes of blacks, Hispanics, and Mexican-Americans, and crusading against the suffering of children, the elderly and anyone else hurt or bypassed by social and economic progress.โ€[2]

 

After Kennedyโ€™s death, the Democratic Party became a shadow of its former self, with six of the next nine presidents being Republicans. The Party in this period abandoned its core baseโ€”union laborers, minorities, and blue-collar workersโ€”focusing instead on Wall Street.[3]

 

Official Version of Assassination

 

According to the official version, Kennedy was shot and killed by a lone gunman, Sirhan Sirhan, a 24-year-old Palestinian-born Jordanian citizen who was allegedly aghast by Kennedyโ€™s recent decision to send 50 jet bombers to Israel to do harm to the Palestinians.

 

According to his mother, Sirhan had been traumatized as a child by the violence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His family home in East Jerusalem was destroyed by an Israeli bombing raid and he had witnessed the death of his older brother, who was killed by a Jordanian military vehicle that was swerving to escape Israeli gunfire.[4]

 

Professional football player Roosevelt Grier and 1960 Olympic gold medalist Rafer Johnson were among several men who subdued and disarmed Sirhan after a struggle.

 

Subsequently, he was arrested and convicted of the murder.

 

The prosecution during his trialโ€”led by World War II hero Lynn โ€œBuckโ€ Compton who was subsequently appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan as Justice of the California Court of Appeals[5]โ€”showed that Sirhan was seen at the Ambassador Hotel on June 3, two nights before the attack, to learn the buildingโ€™s layout, and that he visited a gun range on June 4.

 

Alvin Clark, Sirhanโ€™s garbage collector, testified that Sirhan had told him a month before the attack of his intention to shoot Kennedyโ€”a fact seemingly confirmed by diaries that Sirhan kept which showed premeditation.

 

Sirhan initially confessed to the killing but later claimed to have no memory of it. After the events transpired, he had appeared calm, but not โ€œin complete control of his mind.โ€

 

Sirhanโ€™s death sentence was commuted to a life prison sentence and he was denied parole fifteen times, though recommended for release on August 27, 2021 after over fifty years behind bars.

The Misdirection On โ€˜Fraudโ€™

 

The โ€œstorylineโ€ for the committeeโ€™s June 23 televised spectacle revolved around a letter that Clark drafted and wanted other DOJ officials to sign and send to the leadership of the Georgia state legislature. Hereโ€™s a portion of Rep. Liz Cheneyโ€™s loaded remarks about this. Before reading them, it should be noted that it has already been shown that Cheney repeatedly lied about DOJ lawyer Ken Klukowski throughout the hearing:

 

Neither Mr. Clark nor Mr. Klukowski had any evidence of widespread election fraud, but they were quite aware of what Mr. Trump wanted the department to do. Jeff Clark met privately with President Trump and others in the White House and agreed to assist the president without telling the senior leadership of the department who oversaw him.

 

As you will see, this letter claims that the US Department of Justiceโ€™s investigations have โ€˜Identified significant concerns that may have impacted the outcome of the election in multiple states, including the state of Georgia.โ€™ In fact, Donald Trump knew this was a lie. The Department of Justice had already informed the president of the United States repeatedly that its investigations had found no fraud sufficient to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

 

The words fraud or fraudulent were used some 50 times in Thursdayโ€™s hearing, typically in the way theyโ€™re used in the excerpt above. The Democrat-appointed members would claim that Clark was alleging election fraud and, further, that everything about the election had been fully investigated and there was no evidence of problems with the election.

 

There are two major problems with Cheneyโ€™s argument. First, if she had read Clarkโ€™s letter, she would have noticed that while it did discuss major identified problems with the election potentially affecting the outcome, it never once alleged fraud. Second, it is highly debatable that the problems with the election were ever competently investigated or even understood.

 

If you look at the actual letter Clark drafted for discussion, he referenced โ€œvarious irregularities,โ€ โ€œsignificant concerns that may have impacted the outcome of the election,โ€ and โ€œirregularities, sworn to by a variety of witnesses.โ€ He referenced a report arising from Georgia Senate hearings that had taken sworn testimony and affidavits from many people about the chaotic and troubling administration of the Georgia election.

 

The complaints included problems with ballot custody, inability to monitor vote tabulation, inadequately maintained voter lists, and the counting of ballots from ineligible voters. The testimony even included something that would become a massive concern of election integrity advocates โ€” the private takeover of government election offices by Mark Zuckerberg-funded groups.

 

And Georgia really was a mess, Fulton County in particular. None of Fulton Countyโ€™s respected Republican election commissioners voted to certify the election. They had numerous problems, including that the first certification vote was taken just hours after Fulton County was still finding, processing, and tabulating ballots.

 

During the run-off, thumb drives were accidentally left in voting machines, exacerbating their previous concerns about ballot custody and chain of command issues. The commissioners also were concerned that no chain of custody information had been provided to them, even after they asked, for the 38 drop boxes spread throughout the country. The commissioners were concerned that no meaningful efforts had taken place to verify signatures on mail-in ballots.

 

It is false to claim that these things were properly investigated or that, if they were, there was no evidence to support them. Many independent analysts have determined that the Zuckerberg-funded takeover of government election offices significantly affected the outcome of the election.

 

That was where nearly $450 million was given โ€” with a focus on the Democrat areas of swing states โ€” to help run Get Out The Vote efforts. In an election that came down to 43,000 votes across three states, it is not difficult to make an overwhelming case that the Zuckerberg funding alone was outcome determinative.

 

It would have been difficult to properly investigate that in the short time period after the election, but itโ€™s absolutely false to say it was investigated, much less thoroughly.

3 people, 2 dogs jump ship after New Hampshire yacht erupts in flames

 

A massive yacht caught fire on a New Hampshire river Saturday and sank after three people and two dogs jumped overboard.

 

The group were onboard the 72-foot vessel, named the Elusive, on their way to a marina on the Piscataqua River in New Castle when they noticed black smoke coming from below the deck at around 4 p.m., the New Hampshire Department of Safety said.

 

The three people as well as their two dogs jumped into the river as the Elusive went up in flames. All five were rescued by good Samaritans on nearby boats.

 

The three boaters โ€” identified as Arthur Watson, 67, and Diane Watson, 57, of New Canaan, Connecticut and Jarrod Tubbs, 33, of Jupiter, Florida โ€” were taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released.

As most of the judges and lawyers knew, and anybody could see, I was a paraplegic in a wheelchair, from infantile paralysis, called polio, since childhood. I get about haltingly if at all, on crutches and heavy metal braces. I use a wheelchair. When I refused to divulge our investigative methods, they ordered me to prison. The Sheriff's Police had a problem.

 

 

They did not know how to put a wheelchair-bound person into the heavily-armored vehicle, called a paddy wagon. They were set to take me away, to demean and humiliate me, as if they had caught the biggest bank-robber in American history.

 

The only thing about banks was that the state high court judges had been fingered by me for having been bribed to turn loose the head and major stockholder of a bank across the street from their Chicago office. The banker was in their court on criminal conviction. He had been the top state tax collector, Director of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

 

 

Founded by him, the bank called Civic Center Bank was named for the courthouse across the street. The bribery involved the State high court Judges, along with nine name-brand gangsters, brought into the Civic Center bank as owners, as a pay-off.

 

Unfortunately, this secret has been typical of American justice, Banker-Judges, throughout the land and history. And I knew all about it.

 

The picture of the police and their difficulty in hauling me away to jail ended up in August, 1969, in Time Magazine. The uproar caused the state high court to be swept away into near-oblivion. More than thirty two years later, was published a book by a Law Professor, carefully detailing what had happened. ("Illinois Justice" by Kenneth A. Manaster, 2001.)

 

Shortly after the state high court mess, the highest ranking sitting federal Judge in the nation's history, formerly Illinois Governor, a paid-off owner of the Civic Center Bank; he was then sitting on the Chicago federal appeals court; he together with the State top Tax Collector, were both sent to prison for bribery as a result of our work.

 

 

To this day, many federal judges together with the bosses of the State Revenue and top brass of the U.S. IRS deeply hate our guts for having caused this. Most all the judges ever sent to jail for bribery and related offenses, in the nation's history, were clapped away in the last forty years, as a consequence of our work. And in the whole history of the courts in this country, there is only one other publicized instance of investigation of Fraud Upon the Court implicating the Judges themselves. It was a fraud by the Judges themselves, upon the U.S. Court of Appeals in the 3rd Circuit, in 1948.

 

I have been a key witness in the court corruption and related media corruption involving the Chicago case against Coca-Cola Company by a advertising storyboard creator, former owner of a video/advertising production company, Robert E. Kolody.

Allow me to explain:

Depending on how closely you look, on matters of national security, you may very much enjoy her history of rulings.

For instance: in the landmark case of "Muckrock, LLC v C.I.A." she ruled that the CIA unlawfully adopted a policy of denial for any FOIA request for email records that didnt contain sender, recipients, time stamps, or subjects. In another landmark case, "Cause of Action Institute v. Internal Revenue Service" she ruled that the IRS could not claim exemptions from the FOIA act or that the courts did not have authority over the IRS to enforce the FOIA act itself.

These two decisions alone, were incredibly empowering for you as a people. One of them, ensured that the CIA had to comply with your requests for email records, regardless of you know sender names etc. The other decision forced the IRS and other agencies to comply with your FOIA requests, even when the records are not specifically government records, but are accessible to them.

Why does this matter?

Because in a game of constant, forced division we habitually boil people down to very minute facts we can judge them on. We try and simplify them. But when you are looking at a supreme court justice, it is important to study their entire career.

Indiana town cancels drag show advertised as 'family-friendly' after one post from Libs of TikTok

 

The popular "Libs of TikTok" account caused the cancellation of a drag show in Jasper, Indiana, that was advertised as "family-friendly."

 

The drag show was a part of an event dubbed as "Pride in the Park" and organized by the Dubois County Pride committee in conjunction with the city of Jasper.

 

Libs of TikTok posted a screenshot of the advertisement from the group and noted that they encouraged children of all ages to attend, and also asked for everyone to bring money to give to the drag show performers.

 

The tweet garnered nearly a thousand retweets and more than 3.6k likes on Twitter.

 

On Wednesday, the group announced in a Facebook post that the drag show was cancelled.

 

"We regretfully announce that due to safety and security concerns, the family-friendly drag performance planned for Pride in the Park has been cancelled," read the statement.

 

"This decision was jointly made by the City of Jasper, ONE- Dubois County, and the Dubois County Pride committee," the statement continued. A second contestant decides to do research before choosing which asset to invest in, leaving the first contestant asking, "Wait, we can do research?"

 

While the SEC did not specifically name any companies in its video, it's clear the video was targeted at GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME) and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE:AMC), as well as other stocks that retail investors flocked to throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) recently shared a chart that showed that the indexed return of its "Retail Investor Favorite Basket" has reverted back to its pre-COVID level, wiping out any gains. At one point, the retail investor basket was outperforming the S&P 500, but the latter index has since surpassed the former.

 

Eric Balchunas, a writer at Bloomberg who covers ETFs, replied to a tweet showing the chart, saying that Goldman needs to do a better job of defining "retail" because passive investors have bought $200 billion worth of ETFs year-to-date.

General Wei Fenghe accuses the United States of trying to โ€˜hijackโ€™ Pacific region by turning nations against China

 

China's Defence Minister has lashed out at the United States saying it is trying to turn Pacific nations against Beijing "under the guise of multilateralism" in an attempt to "to create conflict and confrontation".

 

Chinaโ€™s Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe has accused the United States of trying to โ€œhijackโ€ the Indo-Pacific region by turning nations against Beijing.

 

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin on Saturday lashed out at China for creating instability in the region with its claims to Taiwan.

 

General Wei responded to the accusations on Sunday declaring Washington is putting its own interests in the Pacific forward โ€œunder the guise of multilateralismโ€.

 

"No country should impose its will on others or bully others under the guise of multilateralism," he said.

 

"The strategy is an attempt to build an exclusive small group in the name of a free and open Indo-Pacific to hijack countries in our region and target one specific country โ€” it is a strategy to create conflict and confrontation to contain and encircle others."

 

China has increasingly focused its attention on the Pacific region, with a recent security pact with the Solomon Islands causing concern for Australia and the US.

 

The deal could give Beijing a military base less than 2,000 kilometres from Australian shores but both the Solomon Islands and Chinese governments have denied the claims.

 

Mr Lloyd said on Saturday there has been โ€œan alarming increase in the number of unsafe aerial intercepts and confrontations at sea" at the hands of Chinese planes and ships.

 

However General Wei dismissed the โ€œsmearing accusationโ€ as he doubled down on the comments against the US saying it was โ€œstirring up troubleโ€ with Pacific nations.

 

"Some big power has long practised navigation hegemony on the pretext of freedom of navigation," General Wei said.

 

"It [US] has flexed the muscles by sending warships and warplanes on a rampage in the South China Sea."

 

The comments follow accusations from the US stating that China had tested a hypersonic missile โ€“ a weapon which is harder for missile defence systems to counter.

 

China denied the accusations claiming it was a โ€œroutine test of a spacecraftโ€ - but on Sunday General Wei came close to acknowledging the allegations.

 

"As for hypersonic weapons, many countries are developing weapons and I think there's no surprise that China is doing so," General Wei said.

 

"China will develop its military.

 

"I think it's natural."

The state of Alabama has called on a federal court to uphold a ban on so-called gender-affirming medical treatments for transgender youths, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that allowed state governments to prohibit abortions.

 

In a 76-page brief filed with the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall insisted that a previous injunction on the stateโ€™s ban of transgender treatments should be overturned, since such care is not protected under the 14th amendment to the US Constitution as it is not โ€œdeeply rooted in the nationโ€™s history and traditions.โ€

 

โ€œThe Legislature determined that transitioning treatments in particular are too risky to authorize, so it is those treatments Plaintiffs must show the Constitution protects,โ€ the brief says. โ€œBut no one โ€“adult or childโ€“ has a right to transitioning treatments that is deeply rooted in our nationโ€™s history and tradition.โ€

 

The stateโ€™s argument closely resembles the reasoning behind the recent US supreme court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which removed federal abortion protections and placed the responsibility for legalizing or banning the procedure on individual states and their citizens.

 

Supreme Court judges that ruled in favor of overturning the legislation argued that terminating a pregnancy was not a fundamental constitutional right because it was not explicitly mentioned in the US constitution and was not โ€œdeeply rooted in this nationโ€™s history and tradition.โ€

 

In the brief, Marshall goes on to insist that the Constitution reserves to the state, and not courts or medical interest groups, the authority to determine that โ€œsterilizing interventionsโ€ are too dangerous for minors, adding that the State has a right to regulate or prohibit such interventions for children โ€œeven if an adult wants the drugs for his child.โ€

 

The Attorney General also noted that research regarding these โ€œnovel interventionsโ€ was poor and that they were unproven to offer lasting relief to children suffering from gender-related distress. โ€œWhat research does exist is already outdated โ€“ a remarkable fact given that the seminal study on transitioning children was published less than a decade ago and has not been replicated,โ€ he added.

 

Marshall also drew attention to the fact that gender-related distress has become โ€œa tsunamiโ€ as clinics offering โ€œโ€˜transitioningโ€™ treatments on kids are seeing their patient loads increase by thousands of percent,โ€ noting that the new trend was โ€œtroubling.โ€

 

In April, Alabama governor Kay Ivey signed into law a bill which made it a felony to provide gender-affirming treatments to minors, and sought a 10-year prison sentence and a $15,000 fine for anyone providing puberty blockers, hormones or surgical procedures to transgender youths under the age of 19.

 

However that legislation was partially blocked one month later by a federal judge, who dismissed the state GOP leaderโ€™s claim that puberty blockers were โ€œexperimental,โ€ and insisted that transitioning medications were โ€œwell-established, evidence-based treatments for gender dysphoria in minorsโ€ endorsed by โ€œat least 22 major medical associations.โ€

Meta investigated Sheryl Sandberg for using corporate resources to plan wedding: report

 

Departing Meta executive Sheryl Sandberg announced her resignation from the tech giant during an ongoing probe into her alleged use of corporate resources to plan her wedding, according to a report Thursday.

 

Sandberg, 52, shocked the business world Wednesday with her decision to quit as Metaโ€™s chief operating officer, saying she wanted to focus on her nuptials and future philanthropic efforts.

 

But the powerful executive also reportedly felt burned out after building Facebook into a global force and scrutiny of her every move โ€” which includes a review by Meta into her upcoming wedding to marketing CEO Tom Bernthal.

 

Metaโ€™s probe into whether Sandberg misappropriated company resources to plan the bash was still ongoing as of May, sources familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.

 

The investigation comes after a separate inquiry into allegations that Sandberg pressured the Daily Mail to spike a critical story about her then-boyfriend, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

 

A Meta representative pushed back on the notion that internal probes were factors in Sandbergโ€™s reasons for walking away from the company.

 

โ€œNone of this has anything to do with her personal decision to leave,โ€ said Caroline Nolan, a Meta spokeswoman.

 

Meta did not immediately return The Postโ€™s request for further comment.

 

In a lengthy Facebook post explaining her decision, Sandberg noted her upcoming wedding to Bernthal and said she would formally leave her post as Metaโ€™s COO in the fall.

 

โ€œI am not entirely sure what the future will bring โ€” I have learned no one ever is,โ€ Sandberg said. โ€œBut I know it will include focusing more on my foundation and philanthropic work, which is more important to me than ever given how critical this moment is for women. And as Tom and I get married this summer, parenting our expanded family of five children.โ€

 

Sandbergโ€™s personal and professional challenges occurred as Meta attempts to rebrand itself as a metaverse company following a series of scandals โ€” including damning reports regarding the harmful effects that Instagram and other company-owned platforms have on the mental health of teenage girls.

Johnathan Davis shared what he said were screenshots of messages which he characterized as threats by Pragad to use the newsroom in any battle with Olivet. Newsweek was unable to verify those messages.

 

"Finally, you say in your question that 'IBT Media is under investigation again'โ€”however, you should be aware that your own CEO [Pragad] is the target, not me," Davis said.

 

Pragad did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

 

"Dev Pragad is not a target of any federal investigation," a Newsweek spokesperson said. The spokesperson said Newsweek had not been contacted by authorities about the investigation, nor informed of it by Johnathan Davis or any other entities.

 

"The Newsweek company has been independent from the Olivet organization since the separation from IBT Media. Johnathan Davis has had no role in the management of Newsweek after the split," the spokesperson said. "Any association Davis and his wife have maintained with Olivet is their personal matter."

 

Olivet emailed a statement to Newsweeksaying, "The DHS visit was based on misinformation. In fact, the raid ended with agents apologizing. The money laundering charges and all felony charges have been dismissed and the case is fully resolved as a misdemeanor matter."

 

Olivet also said that Tracy Davis was Academic Dean until November 2021 and "currently holds no role in the university."

 

Tracy Davis and Olivet President Matthias Gebhardt did not respond to requests for comment made via their Olivet emails and LinkedIn messages. Emails and calls to IBT Media and Olivet University corporate telephone lines and email addresses went unanswered.

A Manhattan judge ruled a mistrial Tuesday in the case of a Steve Bannon associate charged with siphoning donations to the โ€œWe Build the Wallโ€ charity โ€” after a deadlocked jury said it couldnโ€™t overcome its ideological differences.

 

The mistrial comes after the jury deliberated for more than 30 hours whether Colorado businessman Timothy Shea was guilty of stealing contributions to the fund from ex-President Donald Trumpโ€™s supporters. The charity aimed to privately finance a portion of border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

On Thursday, the jury wrote Judge Analisa Torres to say a holdout, Roberto, had alleged a โ€œgovernment witch huntโ€ and other conspiracies during deliberations and was preventing them from reaching a verdict. Heโ€™d accused the other 11 jurors of being biased New York liberals, according to jury notes.

 

Torres told the jury to continue deliberating despite the discord. But on Tuesday the jury said it had reached an impasse.

Ukraine said it feared scores of civilians might be dead or injured after a Russian missile strike hit a crowded shopping mall in the center of the country Monday.

 

More than 1,000 people were inside at the time of the rocket attack, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

 

โ€œThe number of victims is impossible to imagine,โ€ he added in a post on the Telegram messaging app, sharing video that showed plumes of gray smoke rising above a building that was consumed in flames as people and first responders ran in front of it.

 

The apparent attack hit a shopping center in Kremenchuk, a city in the Poltava region on the banks of Ukraineโ€™s Dnieper River. Dmytro Lunin, head of the Poltava region, said at least 10 people were killed and more than 40 others were injured.

 

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that the missiles were fired from long-range bombers that took off from a Russian airbase north of Ukraine.

 

NBC News has not verified that claim or the number of any deaths.

 

Zelenskyy said the site did not present any danger or strategic value for the Kremlin. โ€œRussia continues to take out its powerlessness on ordinary citizens. It is useless to hope for adequacy and humanity on its part,โ€ he added.

 

The Ukrainian president addressed leaders at the Group of Seven summit on Monday, pleading for more military support such as โ€œadditional air defense capabilities that could shoot down missiles out of the sky,โ€ according to national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

 

The U.S. is preparing to send a medium- to long-range surface-to-air missile system, Sullivan said in a briefing with reporters.
