Hezbollah arrests Lebanese Maronite archbishop upon his return from Israel

A military court summoned Moussa El-Hage for a lengthy interrogation on the transferring of funds and medicine to the Christian community

Members of the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terrorist group arrested Maronite Catholic archbishop Moussa El-Hage earlier this week upon his return to Lebanon from a trip to Israel.

El-Hage carries titles as the archbishop of the Archeparchy of Haifa and the Holy Land and the patriarchal exarch of Jerusalem and Palestine and Jordan.

The archbishop had traveled to Israel to raise funds for the Maronite community – a Christian sect of Syrian origin based in Lebanon that has suffered persecution and discrimination throughout history.

El-Hage’s detention at a border crossing in the southern Lebanese city of Naqoura has raised an uproar among Middle East Christians.

Local Lebanese media reported that the military court’s interrogation of the archbishop lasted eight hours. El-Hage was asked about his connection to Christian Lebanese expats who crossed the border to Israel as refugees following the Jewish state’s withdrawal from the border strip it controlled until year 2000.

El-Hage’s passport and cell phone reportedly were taken from him, as well as nearly half a million dollars in remittances and medicines that he was transferring on behalf of Lebanese Maronites in Israel to their relatives in Lebanon, amid a dire economic crisis.

One report said that the archbishop “felt humiliated” and that his religious role “was not taken into consideration.”

“Summoning Archbishop El-Hage for interrogation at the military court is not based on a certain suspicion, evidence or proof,” said Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Tuesday.

The lawmaker added that “visiting Maronite monasteries in the Holy Land and looking after their affairs is at the heart of his mission as the patriarchal exarch of Jerusalem and Palestine and Jordan.”

The Vatican’s envoy to Lebanon, Maltese Archbishop Joseph Spiteri, told the local press that El-Hage’s arrest sets a “dangerous” precedent. Lebanese activists and journalists have raised concerns about Lebanon’s military courts trying civilians and have sought changes to the practice.

Documents reveal senior NSW ministers knew Jenny West had been chosen for US trade job

Documents released to the NSW parliament have contradicted previous claims made by the Premier and Trade Minister about the US trade commissioner recruitment process.

Key points:

Dominic Perrottet and Stuart Ayres both said they were told there wasn't a successful candidate for the US trade job

Briefing notes now released show they were told senior bureaucrat Jenny West had been picked

A parliamentary inquiry into the appointment of John Barilaro to the job is ongoing

The documents reveal briefing notes were sent to then-treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Trade Minister Stuart Ayres and former deputy premier John Barilaro and stated a successful candidate had been picked for the plum New York-based trade commissioner role last year.

The notes contradict previous claims by Mr Perrottet and Mr Ayres that they were told there wasn't a suitable candidate identified in the first recruitment round.

Almost identical briefing notes were sent to all three ministers to notify them of the "outcome of the recruitment search for a STIC (Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner) Americas" in August 2021.

"Note the selection of Ms Jenny West as the successful candidate for the STIC — Americas," the briefing note said.

Jenny West, a former senior bureaucrat within Investment NSW, was verbally offered the job in August last year but the offer was rescinded the following month after the government changed the recruitment process.

Mr Barilaro successfully took a submission to cabinet to change the trade commissioner roles into ministerial appointments.

He successfully applied for the New York job after leaving politics in a second recruitment round.

However, last month he announced he would withdraw from the job, which comes with a $500,000 annual salary package, following intense scrutiny over the recruitment process.

The documents released to the parliament show neither Mr Barilaro nor Mr Perrottet signed the briefing note but Mr Ayres did.

An email chain between a staffer from Investment NSW, which was overseeing the recruitment process, and a staffer from the Treasurer's office has also been released.

In the emails, it is acknowledged that Mr Perrottet's office received the briefing note on August 13, 2021.

Chinese Investors Shouldn't Be Allowed To Buy US Properties: DeSantis

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned about China’s malign influence in the Sunshine State after reports showed that Chinese investors have spent billions of dollars buying U.S. farmland and other real estate.

Calling China the United States’s “No. 1 adversary,” DeSantis told Fox News on July 23 that companies linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) shouldn’t be allowed to buy U.S. properties.

“I don’t think they should be able to do it. I think the problem is these companies have ties to the CCP, and it’s not always apparent on the face of whatever a company is doing—but I think it’s a huge problem,” he said.

Foreign buyers from China spent $6.1 billion, more than from any other foreign country, on U.S. homes from April 2021 to March, according to a recent report from the National Association of Realtors (pdf).

Chinese buyers spent an average of more than $1 million per transaction—the highest average among foreign purchases—and up from the $710,400 average from the year before. California was the top destination for their purchases with 31 percent, followed by New York (10 percent), Indiana (7 percent), Florida (7 percent), Oklahoma (5 percent), and Missouri (5 percent).

The report also pointed out that 58 percent of Chinese buyers made all-cash purchases, the third highest behind Canadians (69 percent) and Colombians (65 percent).

An increasing amount of U.S. farmland is controlled by Chinese buyers. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Chinese investors controlled 13,720 acres in the United States as of the end of 2010. That amount increased to 194,179 acres through Dec. 31, 2020.

DeSantis also said he has taken steps to address some of China’s influence in Florida.

“I’ve signed legislation to crack down on undue influence from rogue states, including the CCP,” he said. “So for example, we ban Confucius Institutes in the state of Florida—they try to go in higher education, and they try to spread the propaganda.”

The legislation banning China’s Beijing-funded Confucius Institutes was signed by DeSantis in June 2021, along with other legislation that made stealing trade secrets a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Florida has “the most robust protections against CCP influence that any state’s done so far,” DeSantis told The Epoch Times at the time.

The two pieces of legislation went into effect on July 1, 2021.

Florida last closed a Confucius Institute in September 2019. According to the National Association of Scholars, an education advocacy group, there were a total of 18 Confucius Institutes in the United States as of June 21.

2024: Bill Kristol Says Democrats Should Recruit John Legend (Not Kamala) to Replace Biden — ‘Our Version’ of Zelensky

Neocon and rabid anti-Trumper Bill Kristol took to Twitter on Monday to suggest Democrats recruit left-wing pop star John Legend to replace President Joe Biden in 2024, calling the “So High” singer “our version of [Ukraine President Volodymyr] Zelensky.”

“I’ve been saying for a while that we need as our next president our version of the admirable Volodymyr Zelensky,” Kristol wrote. “Today I got another ‘personal message’ — i.e., mass e-mail — from @johnlegend on behalf of Democrats.”

“Which leads me to ask: When Biden steps aside — John Legend in 2024?” the political commentator added.

Readers quickly took to social media to mock Kristol for his suggestion, as well as express their confusion over his remarks.

“We need a president owned by a corrupt oligarch? Odd take,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Imagine going from advising Reagan and Bush Sr. to posting stuff like this,” another said.

“Dammit! Had an idea to vote for Trump should he run in ’24. Bill Kristol getting a ‘personal message’ from Hollywood’s John Legend changes everything,” one Twitter user quipped.

“This has to be a troll, right?” another asked.

“This is a parody account now, right?” another echoed.

“No amount of crack can get me hit send on this kind of tweet,” another Twitter user reacted.

“Bill is day drinking again,” another tweeted.

This is not the first time Kristol has made social media users scoff over his comments.

In March, Kristol was torched on Twitter for comparing President Joe Biden’s dangerous call for a regime change in Russia to former President Ronald Reagan’s iconic “tear down this wall” speech.
