muh training skills
Early years (1974โ1991)
After just one winning season in 10 yearsunder coaches Sandra Hamm (1974โ75), Wanda Flora (1975โ80) and Jean Balthaser (1980โ85), UConn hired as their new head coach the Italian-born Geno Auriemma, who had served as assistant coach at Virginia, with the goal of revitalizing the program. Auriemma's training skills had an immediate impact and the team showed steady signs of progress: after going 12โ15 in his first season in 1985โ86, Auriemma led UConn to winning seasons in 1986โ87 and 1987โ88.[10]
Auriemma pulled off one of his biggest and most important early recruiting successes in 1987 when he convinced an All American from New Hampshire, Kerry Bascom, to come to UConn. Bascom had an immediate impact on the UConn program: in 1989 she won the Big East Player of the Year award as a sophomore (she also won the award in her junior and senior years) and led UConn to its first Big East regular season and Tournament title, along with its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance; the tournament ended in a first round loss. With Bascom and teammates Laura Lishness, Megan Pattyson, Wendy Davis and Debbie Baer, UConn reached the NCAA Tournament again in 1990, losing 61โ59 to Clemson in the second round after a first-round bye.[11]

After college
Kerry was Coach Auriemmaโs first player to go overseas to play basketball (there was no WNBA at that time).[12] She played in Spain for one season.[13] She came home after the season, and married a man she had known since she was about 10 years old. They were together all through high school and college. Kerry missed basketball so she went to France to play. After being married a year and realizing that she and her husband had actually only been together for about four weeks that year between her basketball schedule in Europe, and his endless hours as a rookie attorney, Kerry decided it was time to come home to be with her husband. Kerry was hired as a womenโs assistant basketball coach at the University of New Hampshire which she held for five years starting in 1996.Kerry also is a full-time case manager for Community Partners overseeing services for individuals 21 and over with developmental disabilities in Strafford County, New Hampshire. In addition she helps with the Special Olympics.[14] Kerry and her husband were married for about 15 years but are presently divorced, although they still remain friends.[15]
