Invoke authority. Claim for yourself or associate yourself with authority and present your argument with enough 'jargon' and 'minutia' to illustrate you are 'one who knows', and simply say it isn't so without discussing issues or demonstrating concretely why or citing sources.
Remember how hard you tried to get into the notables? It's a good thing to take stock and consider cutting your losses. The harder you try the less effective it becomes. And how will you deal with your inevitable embarrassment when you are proven wrong? You could walk away and no one would know.
