US Attorney General Merrick Garland said he is open to prosecuting Trump for his ‘role in January 6.’
Merrick Garland was asked by NBC’s Lester Holt if indicting a former president would “tear the country apart.”
“Look, we pursue justice without fear or favor,” Merrick Garland told NBC’s Lester Holt in an interview that will air Tuesday night.

“We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding January 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable,” Garland added. “That’s what we do.”
“So if Donald Trump were to become a candidate for president again, that would not change your schedule or how you move forward or don’t move forward?” Holt asked.
“I’ll say again that we will hold accountable anyone who is criminally responsible for attempting to interfere with the transfer — legitimate, lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next,” Garland said.

'China Wins' If Pelosi Doesn't Go To Taiwan: McConnell
Nancy Pelosi has painted herself into quite the corner regarding her upcoming trip to Taiwan.
If she cancels the trip over Beijing's objections, she'll have "handed China sort of a victory of sorts," according to a Tuesday statement by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
This comes as Biden administration officials bristle over growing tensions between Beijing and Taipei - telling the The New York Times they're worried that China could move militarily against the island territory in as little as one-and-a-half years.
This might come, the report notes, by China "trying to cut off access to all or part of the Taiwan Strait, through which U.S. naval ships regularly pass." Admin officials are further described as fearful and anxious that if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi goes through with a proposed trip to Taiwan in August, it could spark miscalculation or conflict leading to a full-blown crisis.
Chinese state media has been pushing a "military response" should Pelosi fly to Taipei next month, though official statements out of the foreign ministry have stopped short of being this specific, but have threatened the slightly more vague "forceful measures" if she follows through with it.
The timing is also sensitive given Chinese domestic politics, as the Times underscores, "U.S. officials see a greater risk of conflict and miscalculation over Ms. Pelosi’s trip as President Xi Jinping of China and other Communist Party leaders prepare in the coming weeks for an important political meeting in which Mr. Xi is expected to extend his rule."
Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, who advises the US administration on Taiwan-related issues, said that "one school of thought is that the lesson is ‘go early and go strong’ before there is time to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses" - in reference to parallels of the Ukraine crisis.
Coons added: "And we may be heading to an earlier confrontation — more a squeeze than an invasion — than we thought."

Meta asks Facebook oversight board whether COVID-19 misinformation policies are still 'appropriate'
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has asked its oversight board to review whether the platform's COVID-19 misinformation policies are still "appropriate," signaling the company may take a step back from censoring entire categories of false claims about the virus.
In January 2020, Facebook adopted a sweeping misinformation policy that purported to remove false claims about the emerging pandemic that "presented unique risks to public health and safety." The company banned posts that compared the coronavirus to the flu, for example, or those that promoted off-label use of drugs like hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin or raised questions about the lab-leak origins theory of the virus. The company has also targeted skeptics of the COVID-19 vaccines.
As a result of these policies, Meta removed more than 25 million pieces of content since the start of the pandemic, said Nick Clegg, Meta president of Global Affairs, in a blog post.
"Meta began removing false claims about masking, social distancing and the transmissibility of the virus. In late 2020, when the first vaccine became available, we also began removing further false claims, such as the vaccine being harmful or ineffective. Meta’s policy currently provides for removal of 80 distinct false claims about COVID-19 and vaccines," Clegg wrote.
But now, Clegg wrote that "the time is right" for Meta to reconsider its heavy-handed censorship policies.
"The world has changed considerably since 2020. We now have Meta’s COVID-19 Information Center, and guidance from public health authorities is more readily available. Meta’s COVID-19 Information Center has connected over two billion people across 189 countries to helpful, authoritative COVID-19 information," Clegg wrote.
Acknowledging that the pandemic has "evolved" with the successful development and widespread use of vaccines, as well as better information from public health authorities, Clegg wrote that Meta is seeking an advisory opinion on whether it should continue to label or take down content that promotes COVID-19 misinformation.
"Meta is fundamentally committed to free expression and we believe our apps are an important way for people to make their voices heard. But some misinformation can lead to an imminent risk of physical harm, and we have a responsibility not to let this content proliferate," Clegg wrote.
"The policies in our Community Standards seek to protect free expression while preventing this dangerous content. But resolving the inherent tensions between free expression and safety isn’t easy, especially when confronted with unprecedented and fast-moving challenges, as we have been in the pandemic. That’s why we are seeking the advice of the Oversight Board in this case. Its guidance will also help us respond to future public health emergencies."
Meta's oversight board consists of an international team of independent academics, law professors, journalists, human rights activists, and other experts with backgrounds related to global politics and digital content moderation. The purpose of the board is to review appeals to Facebook's content moderation decisions and independently determine whether Meta made the right decision according to its own policies. While its decisions are "binding," Meta remains responsible for following through with the board's decisions.
Most notably, the oversight board ruled in May 2021 that Facebook's decision to suspend former President Donald Trump was "justified," but that the company was wrong to suspend him indefinitely.

Dramatic moment as moderator collapses on live TV during UK leaders' debate
A leaders' debate featuring the two candidates to replace British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been cut short after the moderator collapsed while live on air.

TalkTV political editor Kate McCann fainted on the set of the televised debate as Conservative Party leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss went head-to-head for the second time.
Ms Truss was on camera and talking about the UK's response to the War in Ukraine when a loud crashing noise was heard and Ms Truss raised her hands to her face in shock, before looking around the set and moving over to where McCann had been standing.
The broadcast was then cut within seconds and replaced by a graphic stating there had been a disruption.
A spokesperson for News UK, which owns TalkTV, confirmed there was a "medical issue" and that they hoped to "be back on air soon".
TalkTV later tweeted confirming that McCann had fainted and that while she "is fine", the debate would be halted.
"Kate McCann fainted on air tonight and although she is fine, the medical advice was that we shouldn't continue with the debate," the statement read.
"We apologise to our viewers and listeners."
Another journalist at the debate later tweeted that the candidates chatted directly with members of the audience after the incident.
McCann was presenting on her own after co-presenter Harry Cole – The Sun newspaper's political editor – pulled out after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the day.
It was the second debate to feature Mr Sunak facing off with Ms Truss following their first head-to-head, which aired on the BBC on Monday night.
The pair will continue to campaign to Conservative Party members for the next five weeks, with the members then deciding via postal votes who will be the next party leader, and in turn British Prime Minister, which will be announced on September 5.

NYC City Is Urging People To Get Their ‘Go Bag’ Ready After Issuing First Nuclear Attack PSA Since The 1960’s
Corrupt politicians are intent on perpetuating a state of emergency by employing scare tactics.
In a bid to sustain support for funneling weapons into Ukraine at taxpayer expense and ramp up hysteria surrounding Russia, New York City is issuing warnings to the public on how to respond amid a nuclear attack.
“Never let a good crisis go to waste,” is modus operandi of the predator class.
Earlier this month, New York City’s Department of Emergency Management released a public service announcement guiding residents on how to respond in the event of a nuclear disaster, the first of its kind since the 1960s.
“So there’s been a nuclear attack,” a spokesperson looks into the camera and says. “Don’t ask me how or why. Just know that the big one has hit.”
The video, released on the city’s YouTube channel, advises New Yorkers to get inside fast and don’t stay in the car amid a nuclear attack, stay inside, shut all the doors and windows, head to a basement if possible, and to remove and bag all outer clothes if exposed outdoors.
A spokesperson with the Emergency Management Department maintains there is “no direct threat” but it is important New Yorkers know how to respond.
But the city continues to stir panic.
The NYC emergency management agency advised residents to prepare a ‘Go Bag’ that “has everything you need to to leave home in a hurry.”
“Every household member should have on, including kids,” the agency notes. “What will you pack? Nonperishable snacks. Bottle water. Copies of important documents.”

Ambassador Sabbagh: Israeli attacks would have never been done without western support and UN silence
New York, SANA- Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, said on Tuesday that the Israeli occupation’s recurring aggression on Syria, Palestine and South Lebanon are taking place amid unaccepted Security council’s silence and US, western protection and support.
“The Israeli entity continues its hostile practices to consecrate its occupation of Syrian Golan and prolong its span in a violation of international law principles and international legitimacy resolutions,” Sabbagh said at UNSC session on the situation in the Middle East.
He added Syria calls on the Security Council to assume responsibility and end the Israeli occupation of the Arab lands and hold its authorities responsible for their hostile practices.
“Syria stresses its firm commitment to regain the occupied Golan fully with all available means guaranteed by International law as it is an imprescriptible right,” Sabbagh affirmed.
Sabbagh indicated that the occupation entity launched a blatant aggression on Syrian territory two days ago from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting the vicinity of Damascus city, claiming the lives of three soldiers, wounding seven others, and causing material losses.
He reiterated Syria’s commitment to supporting the inalienable rights of the brotherly Palestinian people and standing by their side in their struggle to end the Israeli occupation and establish their independent state on their land with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions, foremost of which is Resolution No. 194 of 1948.
