Description
George F. Shepley of Portland (1819-1878), a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Harvard law school, practiced law in Bangor before moving to Portland in 1840. He was named U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine by President James Buchanan in 1848.
Shepley served as commander of the 12th Maine Infantryduring the Civil War, as well as military governor of Louisiana from 1862-1862, andmilitary governor of Richmond, Virginia, in 1865.
In 1869, he was appointed judge of the new 1st Circuit Court.
