Why 7-Eleven Let Nearly 1000 Of Its Workers Go

Convenience store giant 7-Eleven has cut roughly 880 corporate jobs in the United States a year after completing its $21 billion acquisition of rival Speedway. The move comes as American businesses have been dealing with broadening inflationary pressure, affecting everything from groceries to gas. As such, several organizations have been cutting down on hiring and conducting rounds of layoffs in an attempt to drastically lower their expenses.

Owned by Japanese retail conglomerate Seven & i Holdings Co, the firm acquired Marathon Petroleum Corp’s Speedway gas stations for $21 billion in 2020. The deal boosted its 7-Eleven store count in the United States and Canada to about 14,000. Then last year, American activist investor ValueAct Capital bought a $1.53 billion stake in Seven & i Holdings. It has been urging the company to make structural reforms and sell off assets at 7-Eleven ever since. According to Reuters, the holdings company promised to revamp its board in April as it seeks to accelerate overseas growth.

The retailer has also been dealing with higher gas prices, which have resulted in some folks not filling up their vehicles as often and not buying extra goods in stores. Now, 7-Elevn has eliminated corporate positions at its support centers and field support operations in Texas and Ohio. Speaking about the layoffs, a spokesperson told Reuters, "We are just over a year into our integration process following the $21 billion Speedway acquisition and have made significant progress." As with any integration, the firm's approach includes assessing its combined organization structure.

7-Eleven currently operates more than 13,000 locations across North America, according to its parent company's most recent annual filing, almost 9,500 of which fall under its namesake banner. In an emailed statement to CNBC, a company representative explained the reasons for the job cuts so close to the merger. "As with any merger, our integration approach includes assessing our combined organization structure. The review was slowed by Covid-19 but is now complete, and we are finalizing the go-forward organization structure."

The retailer initially bought Speedway to boost its presence in America, particularly in the Midwest and along the East Coast. But The Federal Trade Commission claimed that the takeover of Marathon's Speedway subsidiary violated federal antitrust laws. 7-Eleven was later ordered to sell over 200 retail outlets to settle the matter. While the company didn't confirm how many staffers it has in the U.S, it did admit that cutting jobs wasn't easy. "These decisions have not been made lightly, and we are working to support impacted employees, including providing career transition services."

Meanwhile, 7-Eleven has been testing its "Evolution" stores that offer customers special coffee drinks, local food, and features such as mobile checkout. It opened its ninth new location in Dallas, in June. The store boasts customizable beverage options, a premium cigar humidor, and the latest digital innovations in addition to Laredo Taco Company, a popular south Texas restaurant concept known for its authentic flavors on the Texas and Mexico border, according to the press release.

Nearly Half Of Small Businesses In Hiring Freeze, Citing Inflation And Costs

Nearly half of small business owners are not willing to hire because of labor costs and “skyrocketing inflation,” a newly released small business report shows.

The small business network Alignable released its July Hiring report which found that “45% of small businesses (SMBs) are halting their hiring, largely because they say they can’t afford to add staff.

“This represents a significant hiring shift, and is largely a reaction to mounting labor costs, skyrocketing inflation, fears of a recession, and rising interest rates,” the group said.

The report found 4% of small businesses are planning to lay off workers and that “some employers noted that they have learned to live without the extra staff, making other changes and/or working longer hours themselves.”

Alignable’s survey found the sentiment varied across industries, with 66% of gym owners reporting a hiring freeze.

“The same goes for 63% in real estate, 58% in transportation, 55% in the automotive sector, and 55% of retailers.”

Others are reducing staff, including 5% in real estate and the automotive industry as well as 3% in retail. The hiring freeze also varies from state to state.

“The top 5 states most affected by the hiring slowdown are NJ (64%), FL (63%), TX (52%), VA (52%), and CA (49%),” Alignable said. “From 3% to 14% of all SMB owners in these states say they’ll be forced to lay off staff, as well.”

The survey comes after the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed consumer prices rose 9.1% in the past year, the highest in more than 40 years. Meanwhile, the BLS producer price index rose nearly the highest ever at 11.3% in the previous twelve months.

The richest 1% are on course to emit 70x the emissions of the poorest 50% by 2030.

The carbon-intensive lifestyles of the super rich, with their super yachts, private jets and space travel, are fuelling climate breakdown.

For the future of our planet, we must tax them #COP26

Amazing: Not only may Germany keep operating 3 nuclear plants set to close at the end of this year, it could also restart the 3 closed last year within "a few months or weeks," says the head of Germany’s safety regulator.

==What's the leading cause of death in Alberta in 2021?

It's not COVID.==

Mark Steyn did a good episode recently that you can watch here. In this episode, he covers the leading cause of death in Alberta, Canada. I had to check this out. I headed over to open.alberta.ca to see if I could download the data and plot it for myself. I could, and sure enough, Mark was correct.

The number one cause of death listed in Alberta for 2021 was “Other ill-defined and unknown causes of mortality”. Not malignant neoplasms, not heart disease, not COVID-19: some ‘unknown’ cause. What do you think Canadians? Do you believe that the uh-anti-uh-Fringe-uh-minority-guy-uh, uh-pushing experimental injections into every uh-Canadian soul should look into those shots being the etiological agents? Should I also say it in French to appear intelligent? Croyez-vous que les euh-anti-euh-Fringe-euh-minority-guy-euh, euh-poussant des injections expérimentales dans chaque âme euh-canadienne devraient examiner ces injections comme étant les agents étiologiques? Duh.

A few more tidbits:

There was no category entitled “Other ill-defined and unknown causes of mortality” previous to 2019.

The number 1 cause of death up until 2021 was ischemic heart disease and organic dementia (for the past 20 years).

The top 10 ranked leading causes of death in 2021 in Alberta show that Organic dementia has been ousted for this mystery death syndrome and that our mystery cause of death outranks it substantially: there is a 57% increase in death reports from mystery plate cause of death.

The following bar plot reveals #1 ranked cause of death for the past 20 years in Alberta, prior to the shots.

And this bar plot shows what killed Albertans by rank other than the ‘mystery platter’ in 2021.

Hey. Doesn’t this show that the ‘Other ill-defined and unknown causes of mortality’ death toll is 72.4% above the ‘COVID-19, virus identified’ death toll? Hmm. Funny that.

Let’s make a wild and caaarrrazy assumption that the ‘safe and effective’ COVID-19 shots are this so-called ‘Other-etc-he-who-shall-not-be named’ cause of death, then doesn’t this mean that almost twice as many deaths (1.7X) were attributed to the shots than to COVID-19 in Alberta in 2021? By the way, there’s also that #10 ranked cause of death called ‘Accidental poisoning by and exposure to drugs and other biological substances’ category. I wonder how many of those belong in #1.

Food for thought and neighbors. Spread the word.

Univ of Chicago has updated their vaxx policy. Boosters no longer required though all kids in school last year had to get to attend. There’s also a test option for unvaxxed, which there wasn’t in past. So unvaxxed don’t need to apply for exemptions. Thoughts? Full reversal soon?
