Deranged Joe Attacks SCOTUS in Madrid
Intimidating our justices on foreign soil? Just what is this president’s major malfunction?
Yesterday in Madrid, Joe Biden all but put a bounty on the heads of six Supreme Court justices.
He didn’t do it in so many words, of course, but let’s consider what the American president said yesterday in Spain, and then let’s think about this moment in history:
The one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court of the United States on overruling not only Roe v. Wade but essentially challenging the right to privacy. We’ve been a leader in the world in terms of personal rights and privacy rights, and it is a mistake, in my view, for the Supreme Court to do what it did.
The one thing … destabilizing … outrageous behavior … Supreme Court.
So much for politics ending at the water’s edge.
Now let’s recall where we were just three weeks ago: A 26-year-old California man took a cab to Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home with a suitcase and backpack containing a black tactical chest rig and tactical knife, a Glock 17 with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crow bar, pistol light, duct tape, hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, and other items.
What was it that could’ve upset this man so much that he’d fly across the country with the intent to assassinate a sitting Supreme Court justice? Ah, that’s right: He told police he intended to break into Kavanaugh’s house and kill him because he was upset about the leaked abortion opinion and the Uvalde school shooting.
Joe Biden never once addressed this attempted assassination directly. Oh, he released an anodyne statement written by some staffer and parroted by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, but not a word otherwise. That in itself is disgraceful.
And here he was yesterday, on the world stage, just a week removed from the most meaningful (and, for Democrats, maddening) Supreme Court decision in half a century, and he denounces that co-equal branch of American government as “destabilizing” and decries its “outrageous behavior.”
Setting aside the unprecedented nature of a U.S. president attacking the Supreme Court on foreign soil, and setting aside the utter lack of decorum and decency that attends to such an attack, what are deranged leftists to make of Biden’s language? Is it a call to arms from their president? Are there any other would-be assassins out there, or was this sick young man a one-off in a country of 330 million?
And where is Attorney General Merrick Garland in all this? Intimidating judges is against the law in this country. And if Joe Biden’s words weren’t meant to intimidate the justices and rile up his Mob, then what exactly was their purpose?
A few weeks ago, amid all the picketing in front of the Supreme Court justices’ suburban homes, two concerned governors — Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin and Maryland’s Larry Hogan — sent a letter to Garland to remind him that there are laws against trying to influence or intimidate federal judges by picketing “near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge.”
The letter was to no avail. But Biden’s words are even more disgraceful. He’s the president, after all. During fraught times, he’s supposed to be the Consoler-in-Chief, not the Arsonist-in-Chief.
Language like this is unlawful because it “endeavors to influence, intimidate, or impede.” This is spelled out in Title 18, Section 1503 of the U.S. Code.
As National Review’s Andrew McCarthy wrote about the leftist mobs a few weeks ago: “The threat that protests will corrupt judicial proceedings — causing decisions to be made out of fear rather than faithful application of the law — is too great. Political pressure is for policy debates. It can have no place in judicial proceedings if we are to have the rule of law.”
Why does Joe Biden get a pass? What were his words if not “political pressure”? Or, now that the Court has rendered its decision, is it open season on intimidating justices?
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said it well:
Attacking a core American institution like the Supreme Court from the world stage is below the dignity of the President. Beyond that, President Biden’s attacks on the Court are unmerited and dangerous. He’s upset that the Court said the people, through their elected representatives, will have a say on abortion policy. That does not destabilize democracy — it affirms it. By contrast, it is behavior like the President’s that undermines equal justice and the rule of law.
Again: Where is Merrick Garland? And where are the adults in the Democrat Party?
