Your external should be unplugged from your pc,disconnect internet connection, download to hard drive, disconnect drive when done.They can't do anything to it when there is no connection
If it's connected to your pc, even though it's off they can turn it on, I even disconnect the internet cable when i'm not on the pc so they can't get in, like Willy Wonka said….you get nothing!!
