Senate Democrats propose bill text linking US assistance to Israel to journalist’s death

A group of Senate Democrats are pressing for language in legislation funding the State Department that would require the administration to determine if U.S. assistance to Israel should be blocked if the administration finds Israeli forces committed human rights violations or war crimes related to the killing of an Al Jazeera journalist.

Section 620M says that U.S. assistance should be blocked for foreign security forces if there is “credible information that such unit has committed a gross violation of human rights or war crime.”

The legislative text was introduced by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the chair of the Appropriations Committee, as well as Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.).

Interesting choice on the photograph for this article. Leahy has been out for about a month now because of a broken hip and 2 surgeries. I don't know the survival rate for an 82 year old who falls and breaks a hip, but I'm sure it's pretty low. He's surely not actively involved in this bill lately.

VERMONT SEN. PATRICK LEAHY ANNOUNCES HE WILL NOT SEEK REELECTION IN 2022

Leahy's office says the senator and his wife Marcelle "deeply appreciate the continued messages of support and affection that have been offered to them during his recovery."

Leahy, the longest serving member of the U.S. Senate, is not seeking reelection in November. When Leahy’s current term expires in January 2023, he will have served for 48 years in the Senate.

Leahy previously went to the hospital in January 2021, hours after he had begun presiding over the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. Leahy had not been feeling well and was taken there out of an abundance of caution. After being examined, he was sent home.
