DoD Awards $1.74 Billion Agreement to Moderna, Inc. to Secure Over 65 Million Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine for Fall Vaccinations

On July 28, 2022, the Department of Defense (DoD), on behalf of and in coordination with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), awarded a $1.74 billion agreement to purchase over 65 million doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for a fall vaccination campaign. The vaccine will target the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariant viruses, as recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Prosecutors seek 8-year prison term for Shakira in Spain

BARCELONA: Spanish prosecutors said Friday they would seek a prison sentence of more than eight years against global music superstar Shakira, after she rejected a plea deal on accusations of tax evasion.

Prosecutors in Barcelona will also demand a fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24.5 million) from the 45-year-old "Hips don't Lie" songstress, whom they accuse of defrauding the Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Secretary Blinken’s Travel to Cambodia, the Philippines, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will travel to Cambodia, the Philippines, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda August 2-12, 2022.

Secretary Blinken will first travel to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, August 3-5 to participate in the U.S.-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and the ASEAN Regional Forum.  At each ministerial, the Secretary will emphasize the United States’ commitment to ASEAN centrality and successful implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. He will also address the COVID-19 pandemic, economic cooperation, the fight against climate change, the crisis in Burma, and Russia’s war in Ukraine.  The Secretary will meet bilaterally with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to discuss U.S. support for ASEAN and efforts to strengthen our bilateral relationship with Cambodia.  Secretary Blinken will also engage with alumni of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative.

Secret Service director to "briefly delay" retirement amid multiple investigations into agency

U.S. Secret Service Director James Murray announced Thursday that he will "briefly delay" his retirement amid multiple investigations into the agency's response to the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In an internal message sent to staff Thursday afternoon and obtained by CBS News, Murray announced his decision to "briefly delay my retirement and transition to the private sector in order to help bridge the gap and foster a smooth and meaningful transition for our future Director." The director added that he "recently spoke with Secretary Mayorkas and White House leadership, who each agreed and extended the opportunity to do so."

The note was sent minutes after Murray had informed agency leadership of his decision to stay on for the immediate future, according to two U.S. Secret Service officials.

US ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy visits War Memorial to learn more about elite team that helped rescue JFK during WWII

When a Japanese destroyer rammed a US patrol boat during World War II, it came perilously close to snuffing out an American political dynasty.

On August 2, 1943, the patrol torpedo boat PT-109 was on the hunt for enemy shipping in Solomon Islands, when it was rammed in the dead of night by a Japanese destroyer.

At the helm of the PT-109 was a young Lieutenant, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who would go on to become president of the United States.

His bravery in guiding his surviving injured crewmates to safety has become American folklore.

But it took years before the true story of the Australian link to JFK's rescue became known.

Now the late president's daughter, Caroline Kennedy — newly installed US ambassador to Australia — has heard first-hand details of her famous father's lucky escape, on a tour of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
