Ukraine strikes humanitarian convoy – official

Kiev used drones to attack civilian vehicles in the city of Energodar, a regional official claimed

Ukrainian combat drones destroyed cars that were part of a humanitarian convoy in the Russian-held southern city of Energodar early on Saturday morning, a local official has asserted.

“The cars had the markings of a humanitarian mission,” Yevgeny Balitsky, the top Russia-appointed official in Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Region, wrote on his Telegram account.

Balitsky said the overnight attack occurred on empty vehicles parked on the street and that there were no casualties. Three residential buildings, a grocery shop, a hotel and a dormitory were damaged, Balitsky said.

=•Russia invites UN and Red Cross experts to investigate POW camp bombing==

Moscow earlier blamed Ukraine for the strike, saying US-made HIMARS rocket launchers were used to carry it out

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that it had officially invited independent experts from the UN and the Red Cross to investigate the shelling of a detention center in Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). The Friday bombing killed 50 prisoners, with dozens more wounded.

“In the interest of conducting an objective investigation of the strike on the detention center in Yelenovka, which led to the deaths of many Ukrainian prisoners of war, the Russian Federation has officially invited experts from the UN and the International Red Cross Committee,” the ministry said.

The facility in Yelenovka, south of Donetsk, housed hundreds of Ukrainian prisoners – mainly members of the “Azov” neo-Nazi militia who surrendered in Mariupol in May.

According to the Russian military’s earlier statement, the strike was conducted using US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers.

“All political, criminal and moral responsibility for the bloodbath against Ukrainians is borne personally by Zelensky, his criminal regime and Washington, which supports them,” Moscow said.

The Ukrainian military released a statement on Friday, accusing Russian troops of shelling the town. Moscow destroyed the prison in order to pin the blame on Kiev, as well as to “hide the torture of prisoners and executions," the statement alleged.

However, the DPR military suggested it was the Ukrainian authorities who had the reason to “deliberately” target the facility. The republic’s head, Denis Pushilin, said “Azov” members had been providing testimonies about possible war crimes by their commanders. The Kiev authorities also knew exactly where the “Azov” prisoners were being held, DPR militia spokesman Eduard Basurin told reporters.

Meanwhile, unlike the government in Kiev, Ukraine’s backers in Washington did not rush to blame the bombing on Moscow.

“We just don’t have enough information to speak intelligently about these very early reports,” John Kirby, spokesman for the US National Security Council, told reporters.

US and South Korea expand joint military drill

The defense chiefs for the two countries have agreed to enlarge their planned exercise amid increasing tensions with North Korea

US and South Korean defense chiefs have agreed to expand their joint military exercise planned for later this year, setting the stage to deploy more of Washington’s strategic weapons on the peninsula amid increased saber-rattling in Pyongyang.

The drill, likely to be called Ulchi Freedom Shield, will be integrated with a civil defense exercise and upgraded to what Seoul considers its highest level of drill, according to a statement by the South Korean Defense Ministry. Meeting on Friday in Washington, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin and South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup also agreed to strengthen the “deterrence posture” of their alliance, “including the deployment of ballistic missile defense systems and US strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula.”

The talks came one day after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un warned that his country’s “nuclear war deterrent” was “fully ready” to respond to threats. Pyongyang has launched a slew of missile tests this year and may be poised to conduct its first nuclear weapon test since September 2017.

Lee and Austin “made it clear that if North Korea conducts its seventh nuclear test, despite opposition from the international community, the ROK [South Korea] and the United States will resolutely and jointly respond based on a strong combined defense posture,” the defense ministry said.

North Korea has long issued threats over US-South Korean defense drills, calling them rehearsals for invasion. This week, Kim called the joint drills “thug-like behavior” and threatened to “wipe out” Seoul if the ROK makes any “dangerous attempt” against the North. In a speech marking the 69th anniversary of the armistice that halted the 1950-1953 Korean War, he accused South Korea of seeking a “suicidal confrontation” to deepen ties with “the US imperialists.”

South Korea has sought to deepen military ties with the US since newly elected President Yoon Suk-yeol took office in May. Yoon said at the time that joint military drills were “key to our combined defense capability.” The new president also has been an advocate for stationing US nuclear weapons in South Korea.

While Seoul has sought more firepower from Washington, the US has pushed for more cooperation between South Korea and Japan, which have clashed in recent years over trade and territorial issues, as well as longstanding vitriol over atrocities during the 1910-1945 Japanese occupation of the peninsula.

At Friday’s meeting, Austin and Lee “agreed on the importance of cooperating trilaterally with Japan and enhancing regional cooperation that protects shared security and prosperity, upholds common values, and bolsters the rules-based international order,” the Pentagon said in a separate statement.

The Seoul-Tokyo relationship may have been strained further this week, when South Korea conducted military drills near disputed islands between the countries.

Hitler’s watch sells for large sum

The Nazi leader’s historic timepiece brought a winning bid of $1.1 million in a US auction that was condemned by Jewish groups

A trove of Nazi artifacts offered by a US auctioneer – in defiance of Jewish groups that called for the sale to be canceled – generated millions of dollars in winning bids, including $1.1 million for Adolph Hitler’s swastika-engraved watch.

The gold Huber watch featuring a Nazi eagle and the initials ‘AH’ sold for $1.1 million at a two-day auction that ended on Friday. Chesapeake City, Maryland-based Alexander Historical Auctions also reported such winning bids as $290,000 for Hitler’s ceremonial desk set, used in the signing of the fateful Munich Agreement of September 1938, and $27,500 for a gold ring that Hermann Goering presented to German flying ace Hans-Joachim Marseille.

The auction went ahead despite opposition from Jewish leaders, 34 of whom reportedly signed an open letter urging Alexander Historical Auctions not to sell the Hitler watch, which they called “abhorrent.” However, Mindy Greenstein, senior vice president at the auction house, reportedly told German media outlets that the sale was meant to preserve history. “If you destroy history, there is no proof that it happened,” she said. “Whether good or bad history, it must be preserved.”

Critics were unconvinced. Author Aviva Klompas, a former head speechwriter at the Israeli mission to the United Nations, called the auction “utterly disgusting.” She added “Let’s be clear: Selling Nazi paraphernalia glorifies genocidal murder.”

Before the two-day sale, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, chairman of the European Jewish Association, said the auction would give “succor to those who idealize what the Nazi party stood for.” He claimed, too, that the sale would enable buyers to “titillate a guest or loved one with an item belonging to a genocidal murderer and his supporters.”

Some of the other items featured in the sale included a watercolor painting by Hitler, which fetched $27,500, a concentration camp photo album, which went for $3,000, and a blue dress worn by Hitler’s companion, Eva Braun, which attracted a winning bid of $2,500.

The watch was sold far below its pre-auction estimate range of $2-4 million. However, some items commanded far higher prices than expected. For instance, a golden eagle figure that hung above the entrance to Hitler’s bedroom in the Reich Chancellery sold for $200,000, exceeding a pre-auction estimate of $15,000-20,000. The dog collar for Braun’s Scottish terrier, emblazoned with gold swastikas, went for $4,500, above the $3,000-4,000 predicted.

The sale also featured non-Nazi items, including a document signed by the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, which sold for $3,750, and an official letter signed by China’s Mao Zedong, which secured a winning bid of $16,000. A Confederate soldier’s crucifix worn during the American Civil War went for $4,250, well above the auctioneer’s estimate of $300-400.

Dozens dead in US flood

Torrential downpours in Kentucky have killed at least 25 people, and the search for missing people may drag on for weeks

Devastating rains that swept through the heart of the US Appalachian region have caused record flooding in eastern Kentucky, killing at least 25 people and leaving many more potential victims missing.

The death toll has risen repeatedly since Kentuckians woke up to catastrophic flooding in the early morning hours of Friday, and Governor Andy Beshear said on Saturday that it may take weeks to find all of the victims. Among the bodies recovered were those of four young children who were swept away from their parents arms as they clung to a tree.

“We are in search and rescue mode,” Beshear told reporters. “That count is going to continue to go up, and we don’t lose this many people in flooding. It’s just a real tough one.”

With dozens of roads and bridges either blocked by debris or washed out, rescue efforts have been hindered, leaving residents trapped on rooftops in some areas. At least 1,200 people have been rescued by boat and helicopter.

Power and water service remained disrupted to thousands of homes on Saturday. Mobile-phone service also has been knocked out in some areas, leaving people unable to contact missing friends and relatives. The state lacks accurate information on how many people were living in some of the remote areas devastated by the flood.

“Until we have full cell phone service up, you could assume there are hundreds of people – they might be fine, I hope they’re fine – that their loved ones haven’t established contact with them yet,” the governor said.

The region was inundated with eight to 10.5 inches of rain in a 24-hour period between Thursday and Friday, slamming some of the poorest areas in the US. The Kentucky River reportedly rose to six feet above its previous record. Heavy rains may return to the region on Sunday.

“I’m worried that we’re going to be finding bodies for weeks to come,” Beshear said.

The latest Kentucky disaster came in the same week that St. Louis was hit with more than 9 inches of rain in a 24-hour period on Monday and Tuesday, shattering a record that had stood since 1915. A second round of torrential rains struck St. Louis on Thursday, flooding parts of the city and leaving at least two people dead.

The damage in Kentucky is so severe that it may take years for communities to rebuild, Beshear said. Just last year, the state was struck by tornadoes that killed 70 people. “I don’t want to lose another Kentuckian,” the governor said. “We have lost far too many.”

China conducts military exercises amid tensions with US

Beijing held live-fire drills near the Taiwan Strait just as US lawmaker Nancy Pelosi began her controversial Asia trip

China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has launched military exercises off the coast of Fujian Province, just across the strait between the mainland and Taiwan. Live-fire drills were publicly announced amid rising tensions with Washington over the self-governing island’s status.

The drills were scheduled to be held from 8am to 9pm on Saturday near the Pingtan islands off the coast of Fujian, the official Xinhua News Agency cited the PLA as saying. Pingtan maritime officials had issued a warning ordering all ships to steer clear of the area during the exercises.

The announcement offered no details on the weaponry or units that would be tested during the drills. Pingtan is directly between the mainland and Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province and part of China’s sovereign territory.

Chinese officials issued repeated warnings this month that a planned trip by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) to Taiwan would undermine America’s relationship with China and could provoke a military response. Pelosi departed for Asia on Friday, reportedly with plans for visits to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. A stop in Taiwan was listed on her itinerary as “tentative,” according to NBC News.

Pelosi would be the highest-ranking US government official to visit Taiwan since House Speaker Newt Gingrich traveled to Taipei in 1997. Unlike Pelosi, however, Gingrich did not represent Washington’s ruling party at the time. Official US policy is to acknowledge, without endorsing, Beijing’s claim to sovereignty over Taiwan. Tensions over the island republic have escalated in recent months, partly on trips to Taipei by US politicians.

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned US President Joe Biden in a telephone call on Thursday that Beijing wouldn’t tolerate “external interference” in China’s dealings with Taiwan. “Those who play with fire will perish by it,” he told Biden. “It is hoped that the US will be clear-eyed about this.”

The PLA may have been referring to Saturday’s drill when it posted a social media message saying, “Preparing for war.” The post reportedly stirred strong public reaction in China, including hundreds of thousands of thumbs-up on Sina Weibo. Xi and other Chinese officials have repeatedly said that China reserves the right to reunify with Taiwan by force.

Russian rescuers racing to save rare whale tangled in net

A highly endangered bowhead may suffer life-threatening injuries if help doesn’t come fast

A rescue team has been trying to save a rare bowhead whale that became entangled in a fishing net off the Russian coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia said on Friday.

According to the statement, the whale, which belongs to a species included in the Russian Red Data Book of rare and endangered animals, fell into a net set up by local fishermen near the coast and then swam away, thus becoming entangled.

The stricken bowhead was first spotted by local guides during a sea outing with tourists. WWF specialists, biologists and professional animal rescuers quickly formed a rescue team, which was also supported by guides and local fishermen. The whale was soon located, but, according to the fund, did not let the rescuers approach it.

“Now it is clear that the whale still managed to throw off most of the ‘plume’ from the seine, but thick ropes remain on it,” the WWF said.

One of the ropes wrapped around the whale’s upper jaw has become entangled in its whiskers. This is a potentially life-threatening impediment, because it means the animal may not be able to properly feed.

If the rescuers don’t manage to free the whale of the nets, the ropes might tighten on its body, resulting in injuries that could eventually weaken it and make it more prone to illnesses and parasites.

“You might think: what is this news? A whale has tangled up in a net, what’s the big deal. But for the survival of a population consisting of only 300-400 animals, the death of just one whale is a tragedy,” WWF expert Boris Solovyov said.

An expedition carried out by the fund last year revealed that every third bowhead whale had scars from nets and ropes. One animal observed had lost half of its tail to tightening ropes.

The bowhead whale is one of the world’s largest mammals. Males generally reach a length of 14-17m, while females are a bit larger at 16-18m. Some bowheads have been recorded reaching 22m.

The bowheads of the Sea of Okhotsk are considered among the most vulnerable populations of whales dwelling in the polar seas. These whales inhabit the Sea of Okhotsk year round and do not leave Russian waters. WWF notes that the seas used to be populated with thousands of bowheads, but “predatory whaling” resulted in an almost complete extermination of them.

(God please help the researchers save this whale asap)

State Department resists calling Russia ‘sponsor of terrorism’ – NYT

The New York Times says the White House wants to have leeway with the sanctions on Moscow

Officially designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism would limit the ability of the US government to “exempt some transactions with Russia from Western penalties,” the New York Times reported on Friday.

The paper said these exemptions could include ensuring that food exports from Russia are not disrupted by sanctions.

The State Department currently lists Iran, Syria, Cuba, and North Korea as state sponsors of terrorism.

According to the Times, designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism could completely sever the already constrained diplomatic ties between Moscow and Washington. State Department officials were said to view the designation as the “nuclear option.”

Responding to a request by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, the US Senate unanimously passed a non-binding resolution on Thursday calling for Secretary of State Antony Blinken to do just that. Zelensky repeatedly accused Russia of purposefully killing civilians in Ukraine, while Moscow insists that its troops only strike military targets.

Blinken said, however, that the US has already hit Moscow with unprecedented sanctions.

“The costs that have been imposed on Russia by us and by other countries are absolutely in line with the consequences that would follow from designation as a state sponsor of terrorism,” Blinken told reporters on Wednesday. “So the practical effects of what we’re doing are the same.”

On Friday, Blinken spoke with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov over the phone, which was their first conversation since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in late February.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this month that labeling Russia a state sponsor on terrorism would have “negative consequences” for the already fractured bilateral ties.

US lawmakers introduce bill to arm Taiwan

The ‘Lend-Lease Act’ mirrors legislation signed by President Biden to supply Ukraine with weapons

A group of Democrats and Republicans have introduced a bill that would authorize the Biden administration to create a new military aid program for Taiwan. Modeled after the 1940s Lend-Lease Act that allowed the US to arm the allied powers during World War II, the bill resembles legislation recently passed to boost weapons supplies to Ukraine.

Introduced by Representatives Michelle Steel (R-California) and Jimmy Panetta (D-California) in the House, and Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) in the Senate, the ‘Taiwan Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act’ would authorize the president to lend or lease weapons and military equipment to Taiwan, which Taipei would pay for over a 12-year period.

The bill’s name and wording closely follow that of the ‘Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act’, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden in May after passing Congress with almost no resistance.

“Taiwan is our greatest partner in the Indo-Pacific region, and their continued sovereignty is essential to challenging the New Axis of Evil,” said Blackburn, referencing an often-maligned term used by former President George W. Bush to group America’s foreign enemies together.

America’s official position on Taiwan, however, is ambiguous. Since the 1970s, Washington has recognized, but not endorsed, China’s sovereignty over Taiwan, a policy designed to discourage both a Chinese invasion and a formal declaration of independence by Taipei.

The US does provide military aid to Taiwan, but the passing of this act would lift any limits, as the Ukrainian bill did for aid to Kiev. The original Lend-Lease Act, passed in 1941, allowed the US to provide arms to Britain, France, and the Soviet Union without formally entering the war. Although the Allies were supposed to pay for this aid, the US also accepted the lease of bases for its military instead.

Tensions between the US and China have soared in recent weeks, with Taiwan at the center. Biden stated in May that the US would take military action to prevent a potential Chinese takeover of Taiwan, a statement that broke with decades of strategic ambiguity over the island. While his aides swiftly backtracked, a potential visit to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – which Pelosi refused to confirm or deny even as she departed the US for Asia on Friday – has further inflamed the situation.

With Chinese President Xi Jinping warning the US not to “play with fire,” both China and Taiwan held military drills this week. Should Pelosi go through with her visit, she would be the highest-ranking US lawmaker to visit the island since Newt Gingrich, who was also house speaker at the time, traveled to Taipei in 1997.
