The American cable TV channel MTV went live today in 1981. Dedicated primarily to music videos, the station’s very first broadcast was “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles. In MTVs early days, its screen would infrequently go black as a new video tape was inserted to play. The channel would go on to spawn over 20 sister channels.
