Pelosi could pull Taiwan trick – Chinese state media

The US House speaker could use “emergency excuses” to touch down on the island, according to the Global Times paper

The plane carrying US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could try to land in Taiwan despite the self-governed island not being among the officially announced destinations of her Asian tour, Chinese state-run paper the Global Times has warned.

“It is still possible that Pelosi wants to make a risky and dangerous move by trying to land at a Taiwan airport with emergency excuses like an aircraft fault or refueling,” the English-language outlet wrote on Sunday, citing Chinese analysts.

Due to such a risk, “the Chinese military patrols, radar detections and relevant drills should still keep at high alert in coming days,”the paper added.

However, the Global Times pointed out that if Pelosi “really has emergency problems… the People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft can provide protectionto her plane and let her land at airports in China's Sansha city, Hainan Province in the South China Sea, or other airports in the Chinese mainland, which could provide professional services and assistance.

(There you have it anons, Bidan might have sent Pelosi to meet China leadership)

But this will only happen “as long as the speaker’s plane stays away from China's Taiwan,” it added.

Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but never officially declared independence from China, with Beijing considering it a part of its territory under the One-China policy.

Despite agreeing with the One-China policy on paper, the US maintains strong unofficial ties with the island of 23.5 million, selling weapons to Taipei and backing its push for sovereignty.

Beijing, which has been increasingly concerned by those contacts, has reacted angrily to media reports that Pelosi, who is third in line to the US presidency, could make an unannounced trip to Taiwan.

China has threatened the US with “unbearable consequences” in case the speaker’s visit goes ahead, with some analysts going so far as advocating the use of force against the island in response to the “provocation.”

Failure to agree gas deal exposes how EU will make united 'Stand with Ukraine' until sacrifices have to be made

Brussels makes a lot of noise about the bloc’s ‘unity’ against Russia, but energy request has taken things too far for many member states

Last week, the European Union's Commission proposed a bloc-wide reduction of gas use by 15%, starting from August 1 and extending to at least March of next year. Officials from all 27 member states convened this week to discuss and finalize the proposal, after which Commission President Ursula von der Leyen cheered on Twitter: “I strongly welcome the endorsement by Council of the regulation to reduce gas demand and prepare for the winter…

Von der Leyen’s public proclamation risks misleading the public into believing that the entire bloc is on-board with the vision set forth by EU leadership, but the only real unity on this issue is that EU countries that refuse to cut their gas use effectively agree that those who have no choice and no alternatives may need to ration their supply. So there’s really no solidarity among all 27 member states to reduce consumption by 15% voluntarily. And now the EU is forced to accept that reality, even as they try to spin it into a show of unity.

This is really all about the entire EU coming to the rescue of Germany – the bloc’s top economic engine – which lacked the courage to stand up to American pressure to sanction its pipeline projects with Russia. It then stood idly by while the EU did the same – all apparently without any viable backup plan for their own national economy.Berlin made a bad strategic mistakeby depending so heavily on renewables when green energy is clearly not ready for prime time. Egged on by Brussels, officials talked a tough game about being strong and independent and not needing any Russian energy.

__Berlin is still so reliant on Russian gas that it freaked out over a 10-day maintenance shutdown of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, and is now panicking again over pipeline operator Gazprom’s reduction of delivery volume by 80% starting this week___, citing continued maintenance issues.

It’s one thing to cry “gas blackmail,” asBrussels and Berlin are doing, but both brought this on themselves by sanctioning their own vital energy supplies. Of course, it's not exactly blackmail when you have a fight with your neighbor, cut all ties, brag about doing so to the entire world, and then get angry that they won’t just leave their shed wide open for you to continue using their lawnmower.

So to give Berlin a hand, the bloc’s member states have all now agreed that if Brussels ever imposes the 15% cut as a binding measure – well, they’ll just demand to opt out. That’s the kind of “unity” over which EU officials are patting each other on the back.

Malta, Cyprus, Ireland and Portugal either aren’t significantly connected to the EU internal energy supply network or aren’t reliant on gas, and want to maintain their independence. Meanwhile, France almost made the same foolish choices that Germany did by launching headlong into “green” energy, but then dodged a bullet when it successfully lobbied Brussels to reclassify nuclear power (on which it heavily relies) as “green” earlier this year.

So, as theFrench ecology ministry has said, Paris is not at all on board with committing economic and political seppuku in abiding by these new EU constraints.

Greece and Spain also said no to the proposal, insisting on maintaining sovereign control over their own supply. And Hungary is already heading full-speed in precisely the opposite direction, inking new Russian gas deals even as other EU members wring their hands over how they can continue to keep Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky happy without completely bleeding out their own economies…,

As much as Eurocrats are paying lip service to the idea of solidarity, the reality is that the increased pressure – brought about by their own misguided decisions –is already causing cracks in the facade.

Ukraine scattering mines in Kharkov Region – officials

Local authorities say Kiev’s forces deployed the same munitions, designed to maim, in Donetsk

The military-civilian administration in the Kharkov Region has accused Ukrainian forces of using cluster munitions to disperse anti-personnel mines in the village of Tokarevka.

The munitions, which are banned by a 1997 agreement, have also been deployed in Donetsk, officials say.

The administration announced having discovered the mines on Sunday and in a Telegram post showed a picture of a green butterfly-shaped device nestled in a patch of weeds. The object, apparently a Soviet-era PFM-1, was almost invisible among the foliage.

Such munitions are typically scattered in large quantities, either by aircraft or artillery. Designed to maim rather than kill, they are capable of blowing off or disfiguring a victim’s foot. The PFM-1 is banned under the 1997 Ottawa Convention, to which Ukraine is party.

The Kharkov administration accused the “Kiev regime” of planting the explosives.

The same mines have been showered across the city of Donetsk, in the Donetsk People’s Republic, throughout the past week. Donetsk Mayor Alexey Kulemzin said on Sunday that two people had sustained injuries from the landmines, including a first responder who lost a foot.

Photos and video footage from the city showed residents placing cardboard boxes over the mines and marking the surrounding areas with warning signs. Kulemzin said on Sunday that more than 600 such mines had been disposed of in the preceding two days.

Biden offers talks with Russia

China should also engage in negotiations on a new nuclear arms control treaty, US President Joe Biden said

Washington has expressed its readiness to negotiate “a new arms control framework” with Russia to potentially replace the landmark New START, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. US President Joe Biden made the remarks on Monday in a statement ahead of the tenth Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference.

“Today, my Administration is ready to expeditiously negotiate a new arms control framework to replace New START when it expires in 2026. But negotiation requires a willing partner operating in good faith,” Biden said.

At the same time, the US president claimed that Moscow “has shattered peace in Europe” with its “brutal and unprovoked” military operation in Ukraine, which became “an attack on fundamental tenets of international order.”

“In this context, Russia should demonstrate that it is ready to resume work on nuclear arms control with the United States,” he stated.

Biden also called upon Beijing to take part in talks on nuclear disarmament.

“China also has a responsibility as an NPT nuclear weapons state and a member of the P5 to engage in talks that will reduce the risk of miscalculation and address destabilizing military dynamics. There is no benefit to any of our nations, or for the world, to resist substantive engagement on arms control and nuclear non-proliferation,” he said.

While Moscow has repeatedly called upon the US to unconditionally extend the deal for another five years, Washington floated various proposals on its amendment, namely calling upon China to participate.

The landmark New START is effectively the last major arms-control agreement left standing between Russia and the US. The agreement was salvaged after Biden’s inauguration in January 2021, shortly before the deal was set to expire.

Beijing has consistently rejected attempts by the former US administration to drag it into the framework and declined to join talks on the expansion of the US-Russia agreement. China has argued that its nuclear arsenal is too small compared to the stockpiles maintained by the US and Russia.

China’s ready to ‘bury invading enemies’

The country’s military has issued a new threat amid ongoing tension around Taiwan

China’s Eastern Theater Command has issued a strong warning to the country’s “enemies” amid ongoing tension over the potential visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

The Command released a video on Monday, as China marks the anniversary of its People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The video, featuring footage of various drills and military units, urges the solders to “stand by in battle formation, be ready to fight upon command, bury all invading enemies.”

The threat was further amplified by Yi Cao, a hawkish ‘wolf warrior’ Chinese diplomat, who posted the message from the Command on Twitter. The diplomat also reiterated the warning made last week by Beijing over Pelosi's rumored visit. “FM warns US again not to send Speaker Pelosi to Taiwan: Playing with fire will sure set yourself on fire!” the diplomat tweeted.

The hawkish rhetoric comes amid Pelosi's rumored impending visit to Taiwan, which has not been officially confirmed yet. According to the latest reports by local media outlets, the speaker may arrive to the island on Tuesday and hotel reservations for her and her crew have been already made.

Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, after China’s nationalist government fled to the island following its defeat in the civil war. Beijing considers the island an integral part of the country’s territory.

While agreeing with Beijing’s 'One China' policy on paper, Washington maintains strong unofficial ties with Taiwan, engaging in close military cooperation with the island nation. Beijing launched a large-scale exercise near Taiwan as Pelosi departed for Hawaii last weekend, ultimately heading for several destinations across Asia.

The public list of destinations for her tour did not include the island. Some Chinese media outlets have suggested Pelosi could ultimately use “emergency excuses” to pull off touching down on the island without making her visit official.

Mars-II rocket system arrives in Ukraine from Germany

The rocket-launcher system is part of Berlin’s latest weapons transfer to Kiev.

The third in a batch of Mars-II multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) from Germany has arrived in Ukraine, the country’s Defense Minister Alexey Reznikov announced on Twitter on Monday.

“Third brother in the Long Hand family - MLRS MARS II from Germany - has arrived in Ukraine. Thank you to Germany and personally to my colleague #DefenceMinister Christine Lambrecht for these systems. Our artillerymen salute our German partners!” the minister tweeted.

The Mars-II is a German, Italian and French-developed modification to the US-made MLRS M270 multiple rocket launcher. According to the German company KMW, one of the system’s producers, the Mars-II is capable of firing up to 12 missiles per minute with a range of over 70 kilometers. These missiles can be guided using a GPS or mine-ejecting missiles.

Berlin confirmed the shipment to Ukraine of the rocket systems last week, along with three PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers, totaling ten such pieces of equipment. In her remarks last week on the subject, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht also spoke of five self-propelled ‘Gepard’ anti-aircraft guns, whereas Berlin had previously promised at least 30. Kyiv confirmed receiving three of them, along with “tens of thousands of rounds”of ammunition.

In addition, Berlin committed a Cobra-type artillery radar to Ukraine, set for delivery in September. According to Lambrecht, Kiev has already signed the contract for the materials and troops should be starting training for “this highly complex system.” (Ukraine will break it one day)

Media reports suggest that Ukrainian soldiers should have also begun training on the Iris-T SLM anti-aircraft missile system, which is Germany’s most advanced air-defense system. That announcement had earlier caused confusion becauseGermany’s armed forces reportedly do not have a ground-based version of the Iris-T themselves. Nonetheless, Kiev should receive the system no earlier than November, according to reports.

Despite the deliveries, German officials have faced criticism over what has been deemed lackluster military support for Ukraine. Critics have accused Berlin of being reluctant to send needed military supplies and have blasted slow deliveries. The head of the Bundestag’s defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, took aim at German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office over this issue.

“The narrowest point that slows down Germany’s military commitment is, for whatever reason, the chancellery,” the MP with the Free Democratic Party (FDP) said, in an interview with the Bayern media group published on Saturday.

For her part, Defense Minister Lambrecht has said repeatedly that Germany’s military stocks are limited, which might explain any discrepancies.

Anti-Russia sanctions don’t reflect global reality – Putin

Western sanctions are driven by opportunistic political interests, the Russian president claims

The West’s decision to sanction Russia over the Ukraine conflict was made for the sake of opportunistic political interests which do not reflect global realities, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.

Addressing a virtual meeting on Russia’s metals industry, the president noted that the sector continues to face challenges in light of the Western sanctions. He highlighted the problem of limited access to international markets and the ban on buying foreign equipment for the production of fittings, rolled metals and steel sheets in Russia.

“As I have already said, these decisions were made by Western countries for the sake of political interests, moreover, current, opportunistic ones and not reflecting the realities either in world politics, nor in the world economy,” he claimed.

Vladimir Putin argued that theWestern sanctions failed to take into account “obvious consequences”, such as the rising cost of building materials on the international market, and the spurring of global inflation.

The decline in well-being and the quality of life of ordinary citizens, first and foremost in Europe, is of no interest to politicians, not to mention such things as adherence to the principles of the World Trade Organization. These things have been simply tossed into the trash,” the Russian leader added.

Putin described attempts to limit Russia’s metals industry as a blatant manifestation of unfair competition, a bid by the West to hinder Russian businesses and reconfigure world markets in their favor.

Western countries including the US and EU members have imposed sweeping sanctions on nearly all aspects of the Russian economy since the launch of Moscow’s military offensive in Ukraine in late February. The measures include limitations on Russian oil and gas, goods and financial services.

Last month, Putin branded the sanctions illegitimate, saying they ignore the fundamental principles of respecting another nation’s sovereignty and non-interference in its internal affairs. He insisted that such actions not only damage relations between states and peoples, but undermine the global legal system.

Putin also reiterated Moscow’s stance that it will always be a reliable and responsible partner for those who are committed to mutually beneficial, predictable business cooperation. He pledged, however, that Russia will not work to its own detriment with “those who are clearly unfriendly towards us.”

West should avoid ‘one-sided’ view on Ukraine crisis – German official

The fall of the Soviet Union represented a lost opportunity for a new European security framework, a local top politician said

A German state minister has warned against taking a “one-sided” view of the conflict with Russia and Ukraine, saying the West missed opportunities to create lasting peace with Moscow.

Transport Minister of Baden-Württemberg Winfried Hermann joins a growing list of German politicians critical of Berlin’s “one-sided” approach with Moscow and has been accused of espousing a biased view of Russia.

“The military conflicts and participation in wars of the past 30 years do not justify the image that only "belligerent" and "evil" Russia repeatedly enforced its interests with military force,” Hermann wrote in a so-called thesis paper on the war that was made available on the German Press Agency (DPA).

On the other hand, Hermann noted that US interventions around the world had “brought a lot of destruction instead of peace and democracy."

The Green politician believes that Russia has also waged a series of “brutal, illegal wars with proven war crimes” since the fall of the Soviet Union –but that the US with backing from NATO members has launched its own aggressive military campaigns.

Hermann described the fall of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact as missed "opportunities for peace.” That moment in history was a chance for a new "security architecture with arms control and disarmament” which he said would also have taken into account “the interests of the former Soviet states and Russia." The opportunity was wasted in favor of the further eastward expansion of NATO.

The German politician said that a solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine must include Russia, regardless of any war crimes committed. “That is the bitter, inescapable truth,” he said.

Local Free Democratic Party parliamentary leader Hans-Ulrich Rülke responded to these statements by calling Hermann a “Putin sympathizer.” He also demanded Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (also of the Greens) step in and correct these statements, which he says damages the state’s reputation.

Despite the controversy, Hermann joins a growing list of German politicians who are calling for a more even approach to relations with Moscow.

Hermann is not the only German politician calling for a more even approach to relations with Moscow. Last week, Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer told Die Zeit newspaper that the ongoing conflict needs a diplomatic solution and that isolating Russia was bad for Germany.

“I think the idea of isolating Russia permanently or never again cooperating economically is absurd and dangerous… A Russia that is oriented towards China and has no ties to Europe is much more dangerous for us,” Kretschmer told the news outlet.

Germany is feeling the crunch brought by disruptions in Russian natural gas flows to the country, as about half of German households rely on the energy supply for electricity and heating. Meanwhile, a third of the energy for German industry comes from gas. Supplies from Russia have been slashed to a fraction of their normal total in recent weeks due to technical issues – though European officials have accused Russia of weaponizing their supply.

Germany reported its first trade deficit in 30 years this May – of about 1 billion euros– raising concerns about a possible recession and calling into question the success of Berlin’s growth model in the face of rising energy prices.

Why I Won’t Vote to Add Sweden and Finland to NATO

The Senate will soon vote on adding Sweden and Finland to NATO. According to the terms of NATO’s founding treaty, that means the United States would be obliged to defend both countries in the event of a military attack. I intend to vote no.

Finland and Sweden want to join the Atlantic Alliance to head off further Russian aggression in Europe. That is entirely understandable given their location and security needs. But America’s greatest foreign adversary doesn’t loom over Europe. It looms in Asia. I am talking of course about the People’s Republic of China. And when it comes to Chinese imperialism, the American people should know the truth: the United States is not ready to resist it. Expanding American security commitments in Europe now would only make that problem worse—and America, less safe.

China has adopted a policy of dominating its neighbors and bullying free nations into doing its bidding. The Chinese Communist Party seeks effective control over Asia and the Pacific. And it seeks power over the United States—power to dictate our terms of trade, power to take American jobs, power to weaken our economy and make us dependent on Beijing. If left undeterred, China will gain that power. It will swallow up Taiwan, expand its use of slave labor, ramp up its global campaigns of censorship and repression, and make the United States beg for economic access. Even the Biden administration admits that China is now our greatest threat.

Confronting this threat will force us to make tough choices. As the 2018 and 2022 U.S. National Defense Strategies both acknowledge, the United States cannot defeat China and Russia in two major warsat the same time. And we are not where we need to be in Asia. The U.S. is currently not prepared to fend off Chinese military aggression in the Pacific. Our forces are not postured as they should be. And we do not have the arms and equipment there we need, not least because we have been distracted for too long by nation-building activities in the Middle East and legacy commitments in Europe. In the face of this stark reality, we must choose. We must do less in Europe (and elsewhere) in order to prioritize China and Asia.

To be clear, America shouldn’t abandon NATO. But it’s time for our European allies to do more. In particular, they must take primary responsibility for the conventional defense of Europe by investing more in their own militaries. All the way back in 2006, NATO member states pledged to spend at least 2 percent of their GDP on national defense. It should be higher. The United States spends far more than that on defense. But many NATO members still haven’t met even this minimal commitment.

And this isn’t just about U.S. interests. For our allies, it’s also a matter of self-preservation. If NATO member states aren’t prepared to defend themselves, they risk serious danger if U.S. forces are pulled from Europe into a crisis in the Asia-Pacific. Every European nation must now make the necessary investments to prepare themselves for a new threat environment, or risk the worst.

As to Sweden and Finland, both nations are advanced economies, with capable militaries. But they haven’t yet made the policy commitments appropriate to their geostrategic positions. Sweden doesn’t spend 2 percent of its GDP on defense and won’t for years to come. And Finland, though it announced a one-time defense spending boost, hasn’t made clear whether it will sustain these levels. In the event of a future conflict in Europe, U.S. forces would almost certainly be called in to defend both countries.

And even absent armed conflict, NATO expansion would almost certainly mean more U.S. forces in Europe for the long haul, more military hardware devoted there, and more dollars spent—to the detriment of our security needs in Asia, to say nothing of needs at home.

U.S. resources are not unlimited. Already we spend the better part of a trillion dollars a year on defense. And our manpower is already stretched thin across the globe. The United States must prioritize the defense resources we have for the China effort, while there is still time. Until our European allies make the necessary commitments to their own national defense, we must not put more American lives at risk in Europe while allowing China’s power to grow unchecked.

For decades, NATO stood as a bulwark against a militant Soviet Union, protecting the Western world by blocking Communism’s westward expansion. But more than three decades after the Soviet Union’s fall, the geopolitical landscape is very different. Russia is still a threat, but the Chinese Communist Party is a far greater one. And a truly strategic American foreign policy—one that looks to this nation’s strategic interests now, rather than the world of years ago—must embrace this reality, and prepare for it.

Last week, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to allow non-citizens to work in government positions provided the position does not conflict with state or federal law.

People will still be required to provide proof of citizenship to work for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Authored by Chair Hilda l. Solis and co-authored by Sheila Kuehl, the policy allegedly aims to better represent the “community” in city government.

“Los Angeles County is a community of immigrants from each corner of the world,” said Solis in a statement. “And while our County-government workforce reflects the community it represents, there is room for improvement. This motion seeks to make clear that the County, as one of the largest employers in the region, strives to be an inclusive and diverse workforce, and is committed to not excluding nor allowing citizenship to be a barrier to employment.”

Solis noted an estimated 880,000 non-citizens live in Los Angeles and the county’s Public Defender’s Office had received “applications from non-citizens who are otherwise allowed to practice law in California but are disqualified from the application process because of the citizenship requirement,” according to Fox Business.

Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo García said requiring citizenship to work for the city government is tantamount to discrimination based on “cultural, racial, ethnic, or religious characteristics.”

“Barriers to employment based on cultural, racial, ethnic, or religious characteristics are contrary to our core values. Citizenship overlaps these demographic characteristics,” García said. “This motion, by Supervisors Solis and Kuehl, will promote equity in hiring and give the Public Defender’s Office access to the most qualified applicants for employment, irrespective of their citizenship status.”

“An immigrant’s experience will advance our vision, mission, and values to protect our clients’ legal and human rights and enable us to more readily realize my goal that our employees fully represent the demographics of the population that we serve,” García continued.
